Seems crazy not to max retain on him. There will be a ton of GMs who can convince themselves that Toews could be the missing piece that puts them over the top. None of them have 10.5M of cap space available though.
Chicago would have to add with max retention.

This would have to wait until the off season. No team could fit him at the TDL, even a team like Florida who might have Ekblad's contract going on LTIR. Even in the offseason, I think Chicago would have to add.
Absolutely no chance anyone takes him on at that cap hit.

He has zero trade value at full cap hit. Even at 50% it’s a hard sell. Over $5 million cap hit for a 3C. The value given won’t justify the retention.

Chicago needs a team to do a second retain to make Toews somewhat attractive. At 10.5M nobody wants him, not even Chicago. At 5.25M he still has significant negative value. At 2.625M though a team can be convinced to pony up something for him.

I highly doubt chicago could find a trading partner for toews. Ever since he got his payday he hasn't even remotely came close to living up to it. His attitude seems negative and his supposed medical condition imo makes him a hard pass...
No real need for this thread. Chicago has declared a rebuild.
His cap number is a non Issue next year and they are not going to add assets to move him.
As for now, they need the retention spots for other possible trades that actually return something.

Sweetener from Chicago (Decent prospect?)
To Chicago:
Other 50% of Toews's cap (2.625)
Michael Del Zotto (Burried cap hit is 0.875)
Whatever team C gives up for Toews
To Team C:
Toews at 2.625
Ottawa saves 0.800 in real dollars, while taking on 4.375 in cap space
Chicago saves 7.000 in cap space
Team 3 gets Toews at a reasonable cap hit
To Ottawa:
50% of Toews's cap (5.250)

Was just thinking along this line… only with SEA instead of OTT as the intermediary and WPG as the final destination. If Copp and Statsny get moved at the TDL.
Toews is from WPG and Chevy and he have history.

I agree to some degree in your statement, toews only moves if he waives his ntc , however if he becomes to toxic I could easily see Chicago make a bigger effort to move him ... his comments today seem very negative and not something that needed to be aired out to the public....
