Cap space will be valuable for Flames in 3 or 4 years so unloading Huberdeau to sign long term deals with their younger players would be crucial to their cap structure. Huberdeau is better off on a cup contending team while he still has enough juice versus getting trade 4 years down the road when he might not even be valuable enough to trade even at 50% retention.

So Vegas, Oilers, Canucks are just chopped liver? 🤣

Canucks were in last just two years ago. Who knows who will be good this year?

To Islanders-- Huberdeau with 30% retained 7 years left at 7.35 millon.

To Flames----Pageau 2 years left at 5 million and Engvall 6 years left at 3 million.

yeah, no.

we'll hold onto Huby for a long while.
He's good with the young layers and is a good example for the young guys as he holds himself accountable. He's also not playing as poorly as his stats suggest. he hasn't had that guy who goes to teh dirty areas to play with here, and we lack that forward who can carry the play and take advantage of Huby's skills.

It's way too much of an EA sports trade to actually happen, but what about Huberdeau at 50% for Marner?

For Calgary, they can gain significant assets at the deadline by trading Marner. They could even re-trade him to Toronto at that time! Lol

For Toronto, 70+ points setting up Matthews doesn't seem unrealistic, and it would be decent value at 5.250 at least for a few years.

Fun to think about, but it won't happen...

This is completely delusional. Just this summer at his own golf tournament, he was blaming the Flames system for lack of points and declared he "was worth his contract". He's the opposite of a guy who holds himself accountable and a soft, perimeter player with questionable work ethic you want as far as possible away from younger guys.

What's Calgary willing to pay to get rid of him ?
Nothing.

This whole thing should have been locked. it's based on a shitty site twisting what Duha posited about what would have to happen for him to have trade value.

Yeah because I'm going to believe some nobody on teh internet, over whet I've actually seem him say,

And even if he did say that. it's not untrue. He wasn't a good fit for this team, and we let our PP coach walk after one season for an equivalent job because he was so terrible.

You do know it's possibility to say you have to be better and think a system is broken right? Weird, right?

Considering Florida is a top destination and clearly a contender, I think his feelings would be ok with it.
Now that they won a cup, they will get Hubs back 🤣 He would be pissed off because he will think he could have won the cup with them

I think you underestimate the maturity and knowledge of their profession being a business atheletes have.

I’m also sure he has a lot of familiarity with the city and most of the teammattes.

I’m sure he’s not thrilled about the outcome of going to Calgary, but he got paid regardless. It would be much better for his legacy and career than where he is now.

Why would a contender want an player like him: 31years, declining, soft, 7 years left on one of the worst contracts in the NHL-
Not only wants he to be traded, but going to a contender as well? Hey Hubi you played for Florida and got the contract, because you played with a great player like Barkov. And Florida won, because they traded you.
Now you want your cup as well?
Nope, can't have your cake and eat it too.

This sounds like a job for Utah. Trending upwards, can make the space work. High profile player for new market, not really any players in need of a big salary increase except for Loogan Cooley and players with some higher salary they don't need to retain to create room to work more around it later after the season without too many significant issues when Dylan Guenther's contract increase, maybe moving one guy in return like Stenlund. Also as a veteran player for their younger guys.

Another option would be Anaheim, but Huberdeau got to accept them being not contender for a little while yet, though interesting projected team. Though their challenge is they got several young top prospects who will have pay raises in some years and how to manage that. Maybe Huberdeau's contract will be too big unless someone gets sacrificed.

Third option and most interesting to Huberdeau is Boston. They could make it work if they want to.

the thing is, Brian burke when he was on sportsnet, he mentioned more then once that Calgary does NOT like retaining money. And if you look at their history, I can’t recall anyone from Calgary management retaining salary. So huberdeau is going nowhere. Enjoy cowtown hubby, you chose the money, now enjoy it

Treliving retained on Rittich. Conroy has retained on Tanev, Hanifin, and Markstrom. The latter the only not being a rental.

No smart team is going to retain significant money for 7 years. I think Hertl is the longest retention ever and while it's 7 years, it's for less than 1.9m

But it's all moot. Huberdeau hasn't said jack shit. The source if printed wouldn't be fit to wipe a homeless man's ass.

The article is conjecture above all. May or may not happen.

I think Huby will have an excellent year on his new line with Pospisil and Mantha.

And the Flames won't have as bad a team as everyone thinks.

He could have an 80 point season and the contract is still untradable.

He's retiring a Flame whether he or the team wishes otherwise.

Huberdeau is in year 2 of an 8 year $10.5M/yr contract that takes him until he's 38, and is coming off 2 season average of basically 13G - 40A (53 pts)...and was a team-worst (tied) -29 last season. Selling now is selling at an all-time low, and the value expected should coincide. Even at 50% retention, $5.25M/yr until he's 38, for 55pts, you're probably not getting much of value other than cap-relief...and not many teams are going to commit to that much cap through 2031 for a guy that took a massive step back the past 2 years. Either hold him until he regains something resembling value or expect to eject at 50% for nothing major.
