Kings News: Jonathan Bernier to TML for Matt Frattin, Ben Scrivens, & 2nd ('14 or '15) (pst#276)

Frattin never really found his mojo in the NHL (well minus the beginning of the year when he had 7 goals in like 10 games) but he definitely has the potential to be around a 25 goal player. Built like a fire hydrant with speed to burn and a deadly shot. Cons against him are he suffers from tunnel vision (meaning don't expect many assists) and he kinda leaves you wanting more with his physical play (though when he's on he can lay devastating hits).
I'm more sad to see Scribbles go (yes you should all call him Scribbles), I think he had mad potential and is really underrated, but he had a lot of rookie hiccups this year. He seems like a really smart kid though and I don't think you guys will be disappointed. Honestly he always reminded me of Quick, which could ultimately be huge for him and you guys...Scribbles learning from the master.

Not really happy with this trade, Bernier is a #1 goalie already and we get some measly pieces. Sounds like we got an injury prone player with a play style that reinforces it, ala M. Richards. Blegh, I hope Holloway signs at least to replace King...

Frattin was quickly becoming a fan favorite in Toronto before the injury brought him down.

Kinda bummed we let him go, and I really don't know much on Bernier.

This was the best the Kings could do.. Deano was not going to get a first with the goalie market out there, plus the Kings had to move him, upper hand to the Leafs. Solid move, wish we got a first.. But oh well filled some holes, and avoided a Luongo/Schneider issue

I liked Frattin. One of my favorite Leafs, actually. He's very sturdy on his skates. Good hitter and a nice scoring touch. I think he's a good 2nd/3rd liner for sure. Should be a consistent 20+ goal scorer for you guys. He's a great fit on your team as well. He's often been compared to Dustin Brown.

I'm not too familiar with Bernier. Could a Kings fan be so kind as to provide a recent scouting report on him? Strengths and weaknesses?

A pretty good overall review of Frattin and all parts of his game posted a couple weeks ago:

http://mapleleafshotstove.com/2013/06/05/2012-13-player-review-matt-frattin/

...Good acceleration. Good top speed. Skates backwards well for a forward. Finishes his checks (hard, and with purpose). Skates to tough areas of the ice. Strong on his feet. Decent defensively. Big shot. Quick Release.

From that review, a point about his strength that is accompanied by a video of a great play and pass to Lupul during the playoffs vs Bruins.

His lower body strength along with his quick release are the two things that standout as Frattin’s biggest attributes. You can see one of the two here with what was seemingly a dead play that he kept alive by pushing off his inside edges, fighting off Boychuk and sending across a great pass to Lupul.

Don't really like the fact we got Scrivens. Bernier barely played under quick. I think we should of gotten someone that wasn't a goalie. I know we didn't have a back up but 10-15 games a season quick wouldn't of been bad.

Blegh would've rather traded with Philly and gotten Laughton...

Unless the Flyers didn't want to make that trade.

He is?

The Kings don't have a ton of cap space, Bernier is a RFA, and he won't start for the Kings as long as Quick is healthy. Where do the Kings have leverage to make a better deal?

God... This is bad. We got robbed, I'm really not happy, thought we could get something a little better. Bernier is a damn pro.

Also, shoutouts to Matt Barry on calling Matt Frattin & a 1st. The guy does actually have inside sources.

Shoulda waited until the draft at least, I'd think teams would be more desperate then. Its a pretty **** deal but hopefully Frattin at least partially fills the void Simmonds left...

Should of thrown out Scrivens and asked them for a first and a pick.

Frattin fits the Lombardi/Sutter mold, takes the place of Penner and can rotate with Toffoli in and out of the top 6. Not gonna assume the Kings are done though, having Bernier's contract RFA status out of the way the cap space for next season is a little more clear.

They did get someone that wasn't a goalie.

Scrivens is like the 3rd part of the deal. Toronto had to open up a spot for Bernier, and the Kings needed to fill in the spot for Bernier. Plus he's really cheap.

The deal is fine, pretty fair value. We get a good pick, a clear-cut backup, and a cheap established winger that will rectify King's step in the wrong direction. Not many goaltenders would warrant such a package at Bernier's age and without having played as much or had a stint in the playoffs. He got three assets on his own, including a 2nd rounder. We all know what he is, and Toronto is about to find out. Obviously we will hear no end of it in the future when he is their franchise goaltender, but that is just how it goes with goaltenders. We got what we wanted, now let's sign some players, have a good draft, and get ready for another cup run :)

Frattin is a solid player with a very unexpected release. He is also very strong on his skates (very noticeable on a line with kadri).

Scrivens is a solid goalie as well. He's vocal on the ice and trash talked a few opponents in fiesty games.

First and Frattin * they should of left Scrivens out.

And if Toronto doesn't want to do that, then what? If the Kings could've gotten a 1st, I'm sure they would've. Should makes it sound like the Kings have all the say in a trade, which they don't.

Is Frattin another tunnel vision grinder, who can't make plays and score? I think Kings have plenty of those types on the roster allready. Too bad Dean couldn't get 1st round pick for Bernier.

I'm thrilled with this and can't believe how much the Leafs gave up. Basically, as much as Bernier is a #1 goalie to most of us, he was only going to play 15-18 games a season. Scrivens can do that on his own, plus we have Frattin who can do a lot of the dirty work with Richards and Carter AND a second? Excellent!

I'm glad this is over. I really like this deal. Everything that I have heard from leafs fans is that he seems like he could just slot in. He seems like he can play the style that we want to play. And Scrivens already knows his role. I'm liking this deal more and more.
