Player Discussion Jonas Brodin

Where does this come from?

my imagination, possibly, but I, and others, have noticed that Suter seems to not be feeding Dumba very often, and taking his own shot instead. With his high hockey IQ i find it hard to believe he doesn't know what a weapon Dumba's shot is.

What makes you say this? Three months ago I would have agreed but based on his play thus far I think his value has risen quite a bit.

Couldn't agree more. If someone wants to throw a true #1C our way I'd listen but otherwise I like our makeup right now.

Reilly's value has risen, sure, but to nowhere near what it will be if he plays like he has been for another year or so. I'd guess that he's worth, maybe a late 1st, or a decent third liner. He's been playing regularly for a month. That's a really small sample size. He has way less value than Dumba, for instance.

As an opposing penalty kill, if you were scheming our power play, would you shade towards Dumba's shot, or Suter/Koivu's?

I think it's been very intentional on Suter's part this entire season to frequently force himself to take the shot as a preventative measure to entire PPs being lost to passing back and forth at the end of the umbrella.

I just think Suter is incredibly stationary and unimaginative. When he receives the puck, he hesitates with, and that allows the defenders to get in position.

Not only that, but his shot simply isn't hard enough to create rebounds and challenging deflections.

He needs his time reduced a bit more, so he doesn't have play most of the game at a weaker pace in order to conserve energy. Want to see if he has another gear.

I know it's a different spot to shoot from, but It would nice if teams gave up the same amount of space to Dumba as they do to Ovi on the PP.

I thought JOBro had a solid series, but that last period was something else, with a highly skilled goal and assist of his point shot. There is no way he has another 8 point season. Let's not sell this 22 year old Dman cheaply in the off season, if at all!

I think he could use some encouragement from the coaching staff to help with his offensive abilities. Maybe a touch of PP TOI?

Agreed. Do not give up Brodin.

Brodin suffers from the fact he's not very flashy, unless you actually watch him play. Offensively, yes it was disappointing this season but it doesn't help when your defensive partner has mental lapses. I'm surprised that Brodin did as well as he did this season.

He's 22 years old with already 250+ games under his belt and still learning. The kid is someone that 20 years from now when he hangs them up, you'll go wow.

You gotta love how underrated he is among other fan bases. They just look at his stats and think he is a dime-a-dozen player.

He's played 263 games at age 22, which is just ridiculous, and the entire time he's played like a 10 year vet. So much poise and intelligence. His offense obviously has lots of room to grow, but you can't teach his poise, evasion skills, skating, and defensive prowess. He does all of those subtle things that Suter does to evade checks and keep the puck away from the opponent, and he's doing it at age 22.

Even though Dumba has offensive potential that Brodin does not, I really think Dumba has to be the one we trade this off-season in hopes of boosting the offense from our forwards. Dumba's only value to us is his shot from the point on the power play. He doesn't really offer much else at this point. He's never going to be as good overall as a defenseman as Suter, Spurgeon, Brodin, and Scandella are, and we could just scheme our PP a bit different to replace Dumba's shot.

Barring the return of a young 1C, I would be extremely upset if we let Brodin go.

I will stand by my statement that Brodin bought into the Yeobot syndrome most of all. He has the skillset to be more and contribute more on offense but he needs to get over being so damn timid about pushing the play.

Keep Brodin and get a proper coach who can push more out of him on offense. Kid is going to be unreal.

That was his first shot of the entire series and he scored. He had 58 shots in 68 games during the season and then 1 shot in 6 playoff games. Absolutely pitiful for the minutes he plays.

He really needs to work on walking the line and getting his shot through bodies to the net. Or even just getting in a position to shoot.

Brodin is pretty great in his own zone, but when you offer ZERO offensive ability how much is a defensive defenseman really worth. I guess its another year of waiting for the prospects to do something. Hopefully next year Brodin can be more assertive with the puck. Doubt it though

These playoffs are another reminder that in the playoffs, having your blueline play elite defense is not a luxury, it is an absolute necessity.

Brodin, along with Suter, Spurgeon, and Scandella, are our 4 best defensive Dmen, and that is not going to change anytime soon. We need to hold on to them at all costs.

If he returns to the 15-20 points per season level I'm good. There is no reason he shouldn't be putting his puck and skating skills to use.

Dumba is still very young( see Scandella's development), but so far he hasn't shown the reliability that Brodin had in this league from day one. Brodin is definitely more physical this year and more able to take care of himself. He used to get hammered on the forecheck...not any longer, and at times he does the hammering.

As I've said before, EVERYONE should be available for the right piece coming back, but he can't be sold cheap. He hasn't peaked yet.

This, especially considering our lack of elite skill in the forward group, and our style of play.

He's really good. Please keep him GMCF. If anyone goes I think Dumba is the best option. Even though he's a blast to watch and he has a ton of potential. If he can land us an (potential) elite offensive player it needs to happen imo.

Suter-Spurg
Scandella-Brodin
Reilly-Folin

Oloffsson/Vet

Also, getting the puck back in the defensive zone is how you get your offense moving. Dumba, Prosser, Folin, etc. aren't any good at taking the puck away from the opposing team. They just try to stick next to the net and wait out the other team.

He has the offensive skills, and it's time to start using them more consistently. He's got a good shot and he puts it on net consistently.

Yes. There needs to be a combination of encouragement , chastisement, and opportunity, from the coaching staff to get Brodin's offensive game in gear.

He was third to last for shots/60 on our team in front of Prosser and Folin, or referring to when he actually shoots the puck?

Brodin has a sneaky good wrister, its accurate. he DOESNT use it is the problem. He needs to quit trying to make a pass and just start skating the damn puck him self.

It's my biggest gripe with him, he has the skating, he has a good ****, and he's smart but he is way too damn timid.
