It's generally not ideal to be signing players to big contracts as they're entering their 30's...
Depending what the offers are at the deadline, Calgary may be wise to move Gaudreau for picks/prospects, and maintain future cap flexibility
To Philly: Gaudreau
To Calgary: 2022 1st, Tuomaala, JVR... or maybe Foerster, JVR
Philly get an all-star calibre LW who should be eager to re-sign with the team
Calgary get a decent LW to help offset the loss of Gaudreau, plus a 2022 1st and speedy RW prospect in Tuomaala, or an offensive C prospect in Foerster
That's a f***load of assets from Philly for a rental, especially given that they may not even be in playoff position at that juncture.
In terms of the Flyers signing him, even dumping JVR might not be enough. They're looking at only around $14m in cap space next year with only 12 roster players, with Giroux and Ristolainen among those to re-sign. I can't imagine them not giving Risto some awful dumbass contract given the price they paid for him. So think around $21m if they move JVR, but then probably throw $6m+ at Risto, $8m+ at Gaudreau, spend some money filling out the roster depth, and then look at Giroux like "so how big of a hometown discount are we getting here?"
I don't see it anymore. Unless the Flyers do the smart thing and let big useless Rasmus walk into free agency, or are planning on letting Giroux move on. They let Risto walk, they're back to having a gaping hole on the right side of their top 4...and they'd then have obliterated a lot of the trade assets by acquiring Gaudreau, without a ton of cap space to play ball in UFA, either.
Fletcher's dumb though so who knows.
