In Memoriam Johnny Gaudreau & Matthew Gaudreau killed by drunk driver while cycling (MOD WARNING. No Flaming, Trolling, or Politics.)

We had a client who kept a can of compressed air and a piece of rubber hose to fake the breathalyzer.
Almost certain that won’t work as you are just blowing into a breathalyzer. You have to hum to give vibration. I’d also say good luck doing that as you are driving as a breathalyzer isn’t just to start a vehicle, you have to blow randomly as you drive

And no I haven’t had a dui, but two buddies did have them

Not all breathalyzers are the same, or require you to hum into them.

Over 12+ hours later and I am still stunned that Johnny and Matty Gaudreau got killed in a bicycle/drunk driving accident.

It's one of those situations where you hope it's just a dream and you wake up to everything being normal. And when you eventually except that's not the truth, is when the darkness sets in.

R.I. f***ing P in peace.

If I’m ever in a position where I have to contemplate taking a breathalyzer to know if I should drive, I already know I shouldn’t.
People say that til they actually realize how low the threshold is and the problem is first thing that gets impacted by alcohol is decision making ability. I woke up the other morning after a co-workers going away party and felt totally fine but blew 0.08 so didn’t get behind the wheel.

The Lanny and Hayes tributes have hit me the hardest, the amount of outpouring that has come out to commemorate Johnny and Matt truly highlights how well loved they were by the people they touched and entertained.

The thing is that the U.S. is a big country in size. It equals MANY European countries. So we're always going to need a car to get where we are going.

That said, most of our travel is still close enough that we could get there by bike, or a combination of train and bike. We need protected bike lanes.

The first part of that sentence is usually not true in rural areas, and the second part is usually not practical in rural areas.

People who cycle on rural roads overwhelmingly do so as exercise/leisure, not for travel purposes. There are no bike lanes in those areas for the same reason there are no sidewalks.

Yeah well, it doesn’t always work like that, unfortunately. People who are selfish enough to drive drunk often don’t feel bad about who they hurt. It takes a certain kind of person to get behind the wheel drunk, and that type of person often does not give a f*** about anyone else; they only care about themselves - go figure. I certainly won’t be wasting anymore time thinking about this POS, regardless of whether he feels bad or not.
Maybe part of the issue is we, as a society, often don't like to talk about mental health issues. Some people are sensitive in this way. But everyone has someone that cares about them. If one flatly tells someone else that they are selfish, it might backfire. It's like a fine line, but reaching out on the part of the other, or from the person with potential mental health issues, might require a nice sort of reaching out.

Correct, there's a very small percentage of bicyclists doing it in rural areas as a means of transportation.

The Hayes family, which also has serious Boston College lineage, has dealt with serious grief as well.

This whole situation f***ing blows, and just goes on to prove that life isn't fair.

Military background with alcohol coursing through his veins, they think they are untouchable...'

Did you all see the explanation? As per the National Post, he tried to pass two cars. After passing the first, the second one moved towards the centre of the road to pass the two bikes on its right, the guy then decided to pass the car moving to the centre instead on the right, colliding with the bikes.

Under what circumstances would any other driver out there in that situation have decided to pass the second car on the right? It’s unfathomable; even incomprehensible to the drunkest I’ve ever been as a 19 year old. It’s the very definition of recklessness.

Y’all can use this to advance whatever bike loving, car-loving, alcohol loving agenda you want (actually I quite like all three), but if this explanation is true then this dude is simply dangerous to society.

Ok, re-opened.

Please don’t bring Religion into the discussion, that is along the same lines as political discussion which is also not permitted. Thanks!

Why are you just assuming he has mental health issues with absolutely no reason to think so? Some people are just vile. We don’t have to try to frame every single person as some kind of mental health victim to explain their actions. Go watch the guy’s court appearance on YouTube. I just watched it. He doesn’t give a single f***, just like I predicted in the post you quoted. He sat there emotionless, and the only thing he was concerned about was whether he had to spend the weekend in jail. Literally the only time there was any emotion on his face was when he looked annoyed when the judge told him he’ll be in custody until next Thursday. An absolute POS, just like I knew he would be. I think we can drop the devil’s advocate routine at this point. The guy is simply a sociopath, not some poor mental health victim.

I still can't believe it.

Deepest condolences to their families and friends.

Throw every book at the driver. Drunk, high, sober, whatever, he thought he was the most important person on the road, and two people died for it.

Dude is a degenerate, he's unredeemable. I don't give a f*** if he served in the military or what his childhood looked like. His appearance in court just sealed the deal for me.

Not that it would have made a difference for this drunk piece of shit, but it makes me glad B.C. recently changed the passing distance for cyclists from 1m to 1.5m. Even when I pass cyclists legally, I feel like I'm cutting it way too close. The lack of bike lanes in my area is deplorable (and I live in an urban/outdoorsy/high tax area so there's no excuse)

I explained the scenario at a point in a previous post somewhere in the last 10 pages or so. This image depicts exactly what I described.

I assume you're speaking only to the bolded part. But the first sentence that you ignored speaks directly to the rural areas. For your second retort, of course protected bike lanes are not practical in rural areas, but the need is still present in urban and suburban areas.

Lastly, I've been a long distance cyclist who trains on rural roads for 16 years now. Chances are good I know just as much about this topic as you.
