Some people in this f***ing thread. Better yet, don't drive at night either cause it might be your fault if you die from a guy literally drinking while driving.

I mean, it’s a pretty common thing to stay off the roads on New Year’s Eve or St Patrick’s Day. And personally I know plenty of people (including me) who dislike driving rural roads at night because they’re inherently dangerous with the lack of visibility. So yeah, that logic actually holds up for a lot of people.

I’m saying exactly what I mean. You read something else into it, and you are rejecting clarifications that you’re reading something that isn’t there.

At this point you’re making an active choice to reject my interpretation of my own words. I don’t know why you would do that, but it is what it is. In any case, the statements are clear and I’m being crystal clear about what they mean, so your alternative interpretation is your own choice that I can’t control.
Because that statement has no other meaning at this time and context.

Saying a choice was inherently dangerous, when the context of the conversation is someone making that choice subsequently being killed by someone else. Comes with the implication, stated or otherwise, that the initial choice shouldn't have been made. IE that choice allowed the outcome to happen. That's the very definition of assigning responsibility, ie blame, to the victim.

There is no other reason to point out that riding a bike is dangerous at this time. Other than to imply that the Gaudreaus should have known better.

Holy shit get it through your thick head that it's not the same thing. Even if there is no reckless behaviour it is still dangerous to ride your bike on the road at night time because it is dark and there are giant metal death machines zipping around.

Sexual. Assault. Doesn't. Happen. By. Accident. Ever.

But road accidents at night DO.

HOW IS THIS SO HARD FOR YOU

What the actual f***.

ROAD "ACCIDENTS" DON'T HAPPEN BY ACCIDENT.

These two ton machines don't drive themselves. PEOPLE DRIVE THEM. People CHOOSE to drive recklessly. People CHOOSE drive distracted. People CHOOSE to drive drunk. People CHOOSE to violate road laws. People CHOOSE to tailgate, speed, etc. Which ultimately means means these people CHOOSE to disregard the safety of others on the road.

If people CHOOSE to drive in a safe an responsible manner, these "accidents" don't happen. Period.

People like you are the problem. You keep absolving people choosing to jeopardize the safety of others by calling them "accidents", or by focusing on the vehicle instead of drivers.

These "accidents" don't happen out of nowhere. They are the direct result of a choice a person made. A choice to endanger those around them.

In most car accidents, there is blame assigned.

Depending on the impact, there are greater or fewer consequences.

This "whoopsie" concept that you've come up with doesn't really apply.

So apparently this scumbag drunk driver’s biggest concern wasn’t the fact that he’d just ended the lives of two people (and ruined the lives of countless others), but rather that he’d have to remain in custody until at least next Thursday … as if he was the real victim in all of this. This dude is a sociopath and he doesn’t deserve to live amongst normal people.

Reminds me of the Stephanie Melgoza case where she ran down two pedestrians and was upset that she would be missing her class the next day and that they wouldn’t give her cellphone back to her, didn’t care at all that she had killed two people

What a devastating day and true tragedy. My heart breaks for the family and friends of both of these young men.

It's a strange feeling for me. This is a guy who I have followed religiously for the better part of 14 years through both the ups and downs of his career. It really is quite amazing the connections you can create with a complete stranger through the power of sports and fandom. In many ways I grew up alongside Johhny as we are just one year apart in age. Many of my best hockey memories are directly linked to #13. This cuts the hockey community deeply, and most certainly the city of Calgary. He was, and forever will be a legend here in the 403.

I remember being shocked, angry, and confused by Johhny's decision to leave this organization. The passion we have as fans can really distort the big picture at play at times, and incidents like this really put things into perspective and highlight what is truly important in life. Hockey is just a game, and I think I need to do a better job remembering that at times. After all of that, it is sort of comforting to know that Johhny got to live out the final few years closer to home with his family and friends and young children.

RIP Johhny & Matthew Gaudreau. Gone far too soon.

Sadly enough I expected this topic to come up when I read the details about the news.

Cars and bikes will always co-exist on the road. It's depressing to see people arguing about all the wrong things.

They aren't though. People are simply acknowledging we don't live in an ideal world where everything "should" happen the right way.

Borrowing that terrible analogy, we tell people to avoid dark alleys or certain parts of town late at night because no matter what laws we enact or punishments we enforce, there will still be shitty people. Bringing that back around, you have to acknowledge the dangers of cycling at night, and in rural areas where cars don't pay near enough attention.

None of that is to take away blame from the driver who is 100% at fault. Nobody is arguing otherwise. However, saying people shouldn't have to do xyz is a cold comfort when reality simply doesn't work that way.

Definitely couldn't believe my eyes when I read about this earlier. RIP to both brothers. :( Sending love to the family.

Again, you are pulling that interpretation out of thin air.

Playing rec hockey is inherently dangerous. Boarding someone from behind is a major penalty and ejection. If I’m playing rec hockey and someone boards me from behind, it would be completely reasonable with no victim-blaming implication for an onlooker to say “yeah, that’s why I don’t play rec hockey, there’s always some psycho out there doing stuff like that”.

Imagine someone else in the stands getting pissed because this comment implies that I’m at fault for my own being boarded. That’s how ridiculous this is, especially after this many clarifying comments.

When it comes to cycling, my overriding rule is: in a collision, it doesn't matter who was the idiot, the car wins. All other decisions stem from that piece of info. Whether it "should" or "shouldn't" be is irrelevant, that is the reality. Refuse to acknowledge you run the risks, even when it's completely not your fault.

The fact the shithead was still drinking while driving combined with making the only incorrect driving decision to pass on the right, let alone the result. A prior DWI... lock him up and melt the key into oblivion. Infuriating. Senseless loss.

Even drunk, you still need to have it somewhere in the back of your brain that “pass on the right” is an option on a 2-lane rural road, which is not a thought that exists for ordinary drivers.

From the testimony gathered at the scene, it was purely aggressive reaction to a perceived slight against him. He came up fast on two cars traveling in front of him, moved to the oncoming lane to pass the back car, where the front car then also moved into the oncoming lane to give the bikers room, Higgins thought this was an attempt to block him from passing, so he quickly veered back into the correct lane where the bikers were, striking them.

The underlined makes me wonder how much the alcohol was even a factor. He could’ve had 20 beers and that wouldn’t make this maneuver make any sense. Even drunk, you still need to have it somewhere in the back of your brain that “pass on the right” is an option on a 2-lane rural road, which is not a thought that exists for ordinary drivers.

This sounds like a guy who was an absolute danger even when stone cold sober. The alcohol just conveniently means he’ll be off the roads for longer.

Everything about this guy screams POS before the incident. This turd is a Major in the Army and was stationed at the same base I was at before I retired. The fact that he got a DUI in 2005 and still got promoted is nuts (it is usually a career-killer). I bet people thanked him for his service a zillion times and he flaunted it, meanwhile he's a POS drunk asshole who's an embarrassment to the uniform. I hope he rots in jail for life.
