In Memoriam Johnny Gaudreau & Matthew Gaudreau killed by drunk driver while cycling (MOD WARNING. No Flaming, Trolling, or Politics.)

Should is an aspirational word that everyone agrees with.

For me, personally, should isn’t enough to make me ride my bicycle on the roads regularly.

That's fine. There's nothing wrong with that. Just like some women choose to dress conservatively to avoid unwarranted attention. You just don't get to say "women should consider dressing more conservatively" after a rape happens.

Do we even know if it was dark? Didn't this happen at around 8 PM? 8 PM in late August in NJ isn't that dark out yet, right?

Exactly this.
"you shouldn't ride a bike because you can be mowed down by a drunk driver" is a piss poor excuse for a toxic traffic culture.
ps. I hate cyclists with a vengeance but I'm here to defend them when they've actually been civil.

Is it that simple though? There's less visibility for drivers and cyclists at night never mind the drinking and driving aspect of it.

There's always some level of caution needed when partaking in certain activities considering elements that could impact your safety and enjoyment of those activities.

The accident occurred around 8:30pm. I've never been to New Jersey but in Minnesota it's dark at that time. Or at the very least, late dusk.

You completely miss the point. It has nothing to do about inviting.

A girls choice of clothes to wear should have zero bearing on her likelihood of getting raped by a shitty member of society

Just like the Gaudreau brothers' choice of lawfully done physical activity should have zero bearing on the likelihood of getting killed by a shitty member of society.

As much as you want to deny it, bringing it up in any capacity immediately places some of the blame on the victim.
Unless you can make it happen and enforce it, "shoulds" really don't mean much of anything.

I don't know if this was already posted, but the entire police report is here:

This POS was drinking WHILE driving after already consuming alcohol elsewhere. He reportedly approached the two slowed-down vehicles at a "high rate of speed" and then apparently gunned it to the right of them after they moved over to avoid the cyclists.

He also has a prior DWI from 2005.

Glad to see HF is focused on the important things like whether they should have been riding their bikes lol

Stupidity of this place never ceases to amaze

I don't think it is that so much as the larger question of whether or not bicycles should/can share the same spaces. Sometimes it is yes. Sometimes it is is no.

There is a nuance that bike enthusiasts don't want to acknowledge.

So apparently this scumbag drunk driver’s biggest concern wasn’t the fact that he’d just ended the lives of two people (and ruined the lives of countless others), but rather that he’d have to remain in custody until at least next Thursday … as if he was the real victim in all of this. This dude is a sociopath and he doesn’t deserve to live amongst normal people.

Tragic, I read the rumor this morning and prayed it wasn't true... Then the hours passed without anybody denying anything...
I'm speechless...

Rest in Peace...

Sadly enough I expected this topic to come up when I read the details about the news.

Cars and bikes will always co-exist on the road. It's depressing to see people arguing about all the wrong things.

The underlined makes me wonder how much the alcohol was even a factor. He could’ve had 20 beers and that wouldn’t make this maneuver make any sense. Even drunk, you still need to have it somewhere in the back of your brain that “pass on the right” is an option on a 2-lane rural road, which is not a thought that exists for ordinary drivers.

This sounds like a guy who was an absolute danger even when stone cold sober. The alcohol just conveniently means he’ll be off the roads for longer.

It has been reported that he was drunk.

But who cares?

If you're reckless enough to pass somebody on the right shoulder and in the process of doing so you mow down and kill 2 people, the penalties should be just as severe for you whether you're stone cold sober or blew a 0.3% BAC. You do not belong in society either way.
not to mention that overtaking the car in front of you on the right side is illegal AF

I've been feeling sick to my stomach since the rumors began. Waking up to the confirmation was another punch to the stomach.

I can't imagine what the family is going through.

Should be the death penalty.

Drinking while driving and causing someone else to lose their life should automatically have you forfeit yours.

I can’t get this story out of my head today. Still feel so sick.

This guy must have been going so goddamn fast to kill them both at the scene while traveling in the same direction. I hope they didn’t suffer at all.
