John Tortorella Named (Part Time) Head Coach Discussion

The good news is that if Tortorella ends up needing firing there should be no way Comcast doesn't wake up and take an extremely hard look at what the hell is happening here.

Paying a shitload of players who never play and coaches who never coach. They're just lighting money on fire and never going anywhere.
I could probably look it up, but I won’t. I do always wonder what percentage of coaches actually work through their contracts. It’s crazy to guarantee all that money knowing how likely it is they get canned before the deal expires.

You have to guarantee the money, if it was too easy to fire HCs, players would just ignore them, knowing they were lame ducks the moment they signed the contract.

The guaranteed money is a commitment by the FO that players who cross the HC will be history, not the HC.
Of course, there are limits, no HC has much pull over Crosby or Ovechkin, they have to get buy-in.

The Flyers still have a mentality that putting a big dollar sign next to somebody that actually makes it a quality employee when it’s often not the case.

Fortunately for Tortorella they probably don’t feel like paying three head coaches next year & they still have the fire Chuck Fletcher card to play in the mean time. So they should buy him at least those two years which is about average shelf life anyway.

Torts is a good coach. He’s proven over his career he’s a good coach.

Everyone wants a magician who doesn’t exist. Who types in a computer formula that dazzles a caveman league.

People stanned for Sheldon Keefe — who is a good coach — & he’s got a super-talented roster in Toronto with their fans now wanting his head. Same with boy genius Dubas.

Why would he need firing? Because he's a dinosaur who has followed pretty much every single path that we expected him to.

The Flyers are playing worse and it shows in pretty much every metric compared to last year's dumpster fire. Are they playing better than the start of the season? Maybe but they're still terrible. Yes, this is a team that is devoid of talent, but you live in absolute fantasy land if you think this team is playing even remotely poor, let alone something like decent.

Worse at everything. Only Hart has prevented them from being 1-14-0.

Why would Torts need firing?
The team is playing better, it just lacks talent.
As far as "favoritism," the only players who've played for Torts are Atkinson (IR) and Sedlak
Sedlak should be playing more minutes, not less, based on his play.

What all this griping comes down to is people want to see Frost play offense, and ignore the fact that he has failed to generate offense. Maybe he's just not been very impressive?
Going back to last season 69g, 6-11 17 at ES.

Now if we added someone who managed to put up 72g 11-10 21 in his career, even though he was a 1st rd pick, I don't think anyone would be very excited.

For all you Seeler fans, I'd just note he has the best advanced metrics of all our D-men at this point in the season.
And he's been playing with Risto.
They are not playing better

Maybe because MacEwen is playing pretty good lately?
I mean he's not pretty, but like Pitlick, doesn't take a shift off and makes things happen.

It's not like he's taking the place of talented players.

He is taking the place of talented players. I can think of guys who can put those minutes to better use and leave the team better off. You repeatedly claimed that would never happen.

Tortorella is not getting maximum utility or development out of this roster's skillset, and he exposes their weak points. That's the opposite of "coaching genius."

What talented players? Frost? Laczynski?
At least MacEwen actually shows up.

He's not a good player, but he's making things happen, which is better than a mediocre "skilled " player who is generally MIA.

Of course MacEwen isn't top 6, but right now, until Farabee is 100% or Couts returns, no one else is either.

Frost and Laczynski show up. They have been chained to awful players, like MacEwen, who drags better players down while they try to drag him up. Have you even watched them running cycles by themselves while Deslauriers puts them essentially down a man because he's as bad as Thompson on offense? Try to remember the lesson about usage of young players that TK taught you years ago when you were busy being wrong about him in defense of Hakstol.

He mostly shows up in the penalty column. I thought you disliked such "braindead" players? You assured us he would be an AHLer and only get call-ups for injury, now he's a second liner. I won't even ask the question, I'll just tell you that isn't good.

Did we talk about how much of a bitch boy Torts is for skipping out on a postgame press conference? That’s part of his job. You don’t just get to pick and choose what aspects of your job you want to do. That’s not how working…works. If I skirted my responsibilities like that at work, I’d be disciplined in some way. Dude is a loser.

“Accountability for thee, but not for me.”

That's a great sample, but I have a better one.

That's our #7 forward. Averaging more 5v5 minutes than JVR, Allison, Frost.

Why do the Flyers not score goals? It's a real mystery.

He made $13M in CBJ, $2M in Vancouver and a few million in TB. Say $20M overall, so $12M after taxes.
And a nice salary if he just stays a talking head working part-time.
Since he doesn't seem to have an extravagant lifestyle, more than enough for a comfortable retirement on a gentleman's farm.

So while the money didn't hurt, I think he was driven by love of the game, he knew what he was getting into, he's said the rebuild might not be over before his contract expires - I think he loves the challenge, rebuild a 3rd team, get them deep in the playoffs and he's got a spot in the HOF.

They're not rebuilding.
