When the greatest goalie in the history of your team doesn't commit to resigning and starts talking about his team in the past tense, you make this change.

If they did this to make some visible sign of change to Hank then we don't deserve to keep Hank. What would keep Hank is winning, not switching coaches just to switch coaches.

Bad move, we'll pay for it. Just watch

I'm not sure they're going to pay for it. But what is curious is the team was rebuilt twice in the last shortened season to better fit the mold and image of the coach. And now he's gone.

This has to be more than just a hockey decision.

Mike: "Something happened about 'direction of the team' over the last 48H it eventually escalated and upper management and Torts disagreed so he's out."

Interesting.

Very interesting.

Honestly, I'd keep Sullivan, and get another assistant to run the PP. Sully has done a great job with out young D.

Also best of luck to Torts going forward, We all knew from day 1 this had a shelf life and what we got for the most part was way better then expected.

Lundqvist's comments could have easily been interpreted as disappointment in the organization and Sather in addition to Torts. Not surprising at all that Sather wouldn't see this.

Suirprised but not shocked. Lundqvist's comments were certainly targeted. I do find it amazing that you would take out a coach a half season after they were the number one team in the east.

I congratulate John on giving the team a blue collar work ethic and personality. Perhaps he got too far out of balance but Torts' did good work here. He will be back coaching very soon.

And for the future, my guess is that Jeff Gorton is driving the bus on a replacement, not Sather. This is becoming his team and I do not believe he will be looking at the same old news (Ruff, Vignault etc.) as a coach. My choice is former Ranger Dallas Eakins, currently coach of the Toronto Marlies of the AHL and widely considered to be the best coach in the AHL

People knock Mike (Francesa), but you won't find anyone more connected to the Garden than him.

Wow....

As some said... NO RUFF..

Alain Vigneault could be interesting. We need a good mix of discipline and a tactician.

I loved Torts, but this was a move that HAD to be made. So glad it happened, now. Now we can move forward!!

Between this and Gaborik I think one thing is clear:

Our beat writers don't know ****.

Goodbye Torts, it was fun while it lasted.

I don't care about anything else. Just give me someone who can coach a power play and doesn't preach dump and chase on every entry.

Agreed. I do not hate Torts as a person but I did not like his coaching style. We need to adapt and become an offensive minded team.

On a side note, this has to be related to Lundqvist somehow. A simple "We'll see" probably went long way with the front office.

This was the best part about the story. The news is broken by none other than Mr. Hockey himself Mike Francesa.

I hope they go for a younger coach. Time to bring in some new blood.

Sather must have gotten his hands on all the Post-loss PGT's! A billion "Fire torts"'s must have lit a bulb!

I think this is a combination of star players (Hank and co) and upper management disagreeing on Torts philosophy and direction of the team. Think this team now goes in a new direction intended to win and win now.

Mike: "Something happened about 'direction of the team' over the last 48H it eventually escalated and upper management and Torts disagreed so he's out."

So it could be
- Hanks comments leading to management wanting a more offensive system
- Management wanting a Richards buyout
- Management wanting Sullivan fired
