It's just 2 for OT win/1 for OT loss.

Saw O'Neill on TSN this morning giving that gibberish about how Binnington made the "right saves at the right time." He's not alone, you hear that a lot from analysts but in most cases, like last night, it's B.S.

The "right save at the right time" would have been stopping Kempe in the 3rd and then there's likely no OT and Canada gets the full 3 points.

Yes, Binnington was good in OT - the right saves! - and I have no issue if Cooper wants to go back to him in game 2. I get how not being active in the first period can be difficult for goalies and Canada did let up after that first, but Binnington's going to have to be really on his game right from the drop of the puck on Saturday as I expect USA will come out flying.

The first goal, he went down early and was moving sideways. Wasn't the best form, but he battled afterwards.

HDCF were 10-5 Canada.

I felt we defended extrememly well, and gave up nearly nothing and still had to battle into OT for the win.

If Price was healthy he would be on this team, what a shame.

Crosby was pretty good. McDavid can fly knowing Marner is staying back but it would be nice if they had a bigger body that could skate with him.
Yeah Marner cheats defensively, does the same thing for the Leafs, some people have trouble identifying that. He and McDavid looked out of sync no doubt but it’s to be expected.

My point was more that MacKinnon and Crosby were good together so it’s doubtful they’d be broken up.

Maybe Stone and Rienhart flip spots?
Really I doubt they change the top two lines at all and just let them continue to find some chemistry.

Reinhart was as MEH as Marner playing with 97. Why you would not bring a guy who works well with McDavid is questionable IMO. Scheifele, Weegar, and Thompson should also be there.

Nice goal by Marner there. Amazing what happens when the guy shoots!

I also didn’t think he was as bad as everyone is saying during regular time. He didn’t do much but had some nice plays. Really tough to play with McDavid as he always wants the puck and he’s just too goddamn quick. Marner would be better off lower in the lineup where he’s not deferring to McDavid all the time (where have we heard that before?!)

Was hoping for more from Nylander. Almost had a break in OT. We got lucky there with the missed too many men call.

I thought Stone lagged behind like Marner and Reinhart in the keeping up. I’d try moving Marchand or Hagel up with McDavid. Marchand is accustomed to the speed McDavid can with due to his training with 87/29. Plus he’s good in small ice situations.

Yeah there are certainly lots of options but I still believe they will keep the top two lines together and live or die with them.

Was surprised by the Cirelli line, they need to be better. I imagine one of the wingers comes out for Bennett

I thought the line looked better in the third period.

Took awhile for every line to find some chemistry on both teams.

Saturday's game should be interesting. I expect it will be pretty physical and McDavid and Mack will have to be the difference makers.

Answer : Almost 50 years ago now, back in 1976.

In the 1976 Canada Cup, Lanny MacDonald set up Leaf teammate Darryl Sittler in OT to beat the Czechs

For many players, winning the Canada Cup was the highlight of their careers. Bobby Orr and Lanny McDonald both rated winning this tournament ahead of winning the Stanley Cup.

The great Börje Salming lead team Sweden in scoring and was named Sweden's MVP and made the tournaments All-Star team on Defense beside Bobby Orr, along with Leafs then captain Sittler joining him for that award for Canada.

Maple Leafs had 2 members Sittler and Salming being named to the Tournament All-Star team.

Lets see if Auston, Willy and Mitch can find that level of success. :)

PS.. Maple Leafs Swedish teammate Inge Hammarstrom also played in the tournament making it 4 Leafs. :wg:
I don't know where that Czech/Canada game ranks in people's minds for all time great games but for me it''s top 3. Now I was just a 10 year old kid but I never saw goaltending like that and Sittler's winner was the kind of ecstasy I imagine a Stanely Cup winner must feel like. Being a Leaf devotee for a mere 50+ years, I wouldn't know for sure, but that's how it felt for me.

I actually think this tournament leads way to the NHL doing an in-season tournament like the NBA does.

If the premise is to give some more meaningful hockey mid-season outside of the typical regular season games, I don't see the harm.

Olympics every four years. World Cups every four years, two years opposite each Olympics. Every other alternate non-Olympics or World Cup year do an in-season tournament.

4th line got run over a little bit but everyones still feeling it out. The extra night of rest for Canada might make a difference for the game against the US after last nights electric pace had the team looking pretty rundown by the end.

I still cant believe people thought this would look like an all star game and wouldnt be good. Maybe the worst predictions ever made around here and thats saying a lot. These guys looked as dialed in as any game 7 in the playoffs.

I'd go with Hill vs USA. Continue with Hill if he wins. Lose and go back to Binner vs Finland and probably the final, assuming they get there.

I'd go something like for lines 2/3:
Hagel McDavid Reinhart
Marchand Point Marner

I thought Cooper's line combos were a bit weird, but it's always going to look that way I guess with so much talent.
