It was not blatant interference. Holl didn’t throw a check, all he did was skate into the same ice that Cirelli wanted to skate into and Holl got there first. Holl was just as much entitled to that space as Cirelli was.
Yeah, I found it very very strange. And even weirder were the amount of people agreeing it was interference.

So the rule is that players in the offensive zone have to get out of the way of any defending player? I've literally never heard of that rule before. The "get out of the way" rule.

I watched a montage of playoff goals for every team this year. The amount of times players without the puck bumped into other players who were "in the way" when the goal went in was remarkable. It's just so common. It's a constant fight for space. Honestly, I've never heard of this "you have to get out of the way" rule.

Knies would seem to best fit that description but he seems another year out.

There are 2 players on Tavares line that would be 1st. line on several teams, and while it would be nice to land another top 6 for the 2nd. line I think what they need is a player who skates better than Tavares, is more physical than Nylander, and doesn't mind getting messed up.

I don't think that is an insurmountable criteria.

That should be rather easy based on the skills to players you just mentioned

Junior players would be more physical and numerous players can skate

Faster than Tavares and more physical than Nylander is casting a pretty wide net, should be able to find that.

I'm surprised that there are people who don't get this.

Here's a straightforward explanation from 'Hockey101', which is geared towards newer fans, so the wording is pretty simple:

"The pick-and-roll is a key play in basketball. It is not a legal play in the NHL. A player cannot step in front of another that is not in possession of the puck in order to take him out of the play."

That play by Holl was clearly interference - about as obvious as can be.

If Colton wasn't called for interference in game 5 on McDonagh's tying goal, then Holl shoulnd't have been called for interference on Tavares' tying goal. Puck was nowhere near the play, goes to the corner and get the puck and feeds McDonagh for the goal.

Or if Killorn wasn't called for interference on the in game 7 on Paul's winning goal. It's the lack of consistency on
these calls that are infuriating.

3 cases of interference leading to an important goal, only 1 called. If they called all of them, no complaints.

Holl even fell in pure clumsy style after bumping into Cirelli, offering the refs absolutely nothing to work with in the event they were willing to not call a penalty :laugh::laugh: I'm convinced others who think the Holl pick is equivalent to picks that were allowed in other games don't even remember what the Holl pick looked like. They are not equivalent.

The interference on Rielly wasn't a pick, but it was as blatant as interfernce gets and directly lead to the goal.

Its intereference by the rule book that largely isnt enforced and was routinely ignored in that game.

Fine to call it if a standard was set on the multiple examples up to that point, but that didnt happen.

just like the simulation when a highstick gets near your face, yea, they were sneaky and sold things well.

Big bad Leafs in the playoffs again (at least to the officials)

penalties-per-game.webp
They’ll definitely need to adapt their game if they want playoff success.

I am not excusing the trash reffing seen this playoffs, all I am saying is that Holl put the refs in a tough spot if they were willing to remain consistent on letting picks go. It was easily one of the worst picks thrown this playoffs, horrible execution and horrible landing of the ending. Holl just looks like a big buffoon on the entire play. You can feel the "oh no I'm not supposed to be here" through the screen and then he puts the icing on the cake by not even being able to stay on his skates.

By about 2 strides.

I don't think he even needed to take those last strides as Tavares had positioning and McDonagh was in a weak position chasing from behind.

This aspect of the play makes me want to cry.

John Tavares, getting slandered all season long, goes full 11 mil mode in game 7 and finesses the defensive player on him. Cuts to the middle and scores a goal and instantly we feel the momentum rush that tells us this game is ours.

Nope....we can't have anything nice, big clumsy Holl comes and snatches glory away from us. Zero reasons for him to be there, but in pure Holl fashion he's there anyways. Sums up his stay here....zero reason he should be here.

This. Who even cares if it's a penalty or not at this point.

If you see John f***ing Tavares going to work, stay out of his damn way. I have no idea how Holl has any fans left.

No question, and its blatantly obvious the Refs had no choice but to call it. Which they did which isn't Refs fault its the Holl's fault.

All eyes were on the play, as JT was behind the net circling with the puck & possession and being covered by the opposition centre Cirreli on the play. As he comes around, Holl leaves his position at the right point comes down to the face-off dot and takes out the defender chasing him, allowing JT a clear path to the crease and a high danger area and scoring chance, Holl even falls down on the collision making it not just a slight pick and role but a bump, enough to knock a 6-4/200 player off his skates with the collision as Holl pretends it was accidental, drawing even more attention to the play. Stamkos even immediately raises his hand to acknowledging the interference penalty and clear picked on the play.

Refs hand goes up he blows the whistle, standing right in front of the Leafs bench on a delayed penalty call well before Tavares even shot the puck, as the play was dead at time of the pick.

John Tavares Has Goal Waved Off After Justin Holl Called For Interference Penalty

There was nothing legal about that play, and interfence penalties on pick plays that create HDSC for their team are expected to be called 100%. The legal complaints should come on pick plays that are not called, particularly ones that result in goals.

So many words, to say so little. The @Mess specialty.

Picks happen all the time and calling that one there is atrocious.

Especially because they literally let the Bolts grab Muzzin's stick away from him for them to score the game winning goal, a far far worse interference play.

It was a very obvious pick that immediately created a scoring opportunity. Hard to not call it.

Sometimes a 'penalty' isn't called because it's well away from the play, and probably doesn't result in a chance. Sometimes it does, but too late to call, like the trip/inteference that led directly to the Cup winning goal. Easy to not call a meaningless trip well away from the play, and by the time the goal is scored it's way too late. (Personally I hate that, and i would have called the penalty, but I can see the logic.)

But the Holl pick was impossible to not call.

Thanks for the video. How can anyone watch that and think it was the wrong call?

You point out the issue though.

Refs calling what they want to call.

I watched all the games after we were eliminated… I paid close attention to the officiating… this is the Stanley Cup playoffs, ffs… you only call that penalty if Tampa was actually going to stop Tavares from getting the shot off.
The referees sucked.
