Tavares is going to be entitled to superstar treatment each and every night and allowed to work through his problems as long as it doesn't massively cripple the team. It didn't in the regular season and the series is 2-2, so things look healthy on paper.
However, his extremely poor quality of play would suggest that in order for the Shanaplan to keep moving forward, Tavares needs to be traded. Otherwise it's just an annual game of letting half the support cast work and pretend like everything's okay. Even if it takes a first round pick and some minor salary retention, I think you have to consider it. If we could free up $8-$11 million this gives the Leafs such a new lease on life.
