At $11 million per year Tavares should be an impact player. He's not. He's a good second line player playing behind a great player and consequently being given easier matchups because other teams concentrate on Matthews.

He was garbage vs CBJ

Choked so badly in game 5. Had 3 in 5 that series which statistically was worse than all of the other 3

Boston 2019 he wasn't great but not so bad either. In 2019 he tried doing way to much by himself going 1 on 2 vs the Bruins defense. Was strong defensively though
 
Tavares is like that guy at the beach. He takes off his shoes and 10 pounds of sand comes pouring out.

Can someone empty his skates?

Did Tavares' useless assist save him from his much deserved demotion to the 4th line or am I being too optimistic about that even being a possiblity? I think Keefe and Dubas would be more worried about hurting Tavares' feelings then winning this series.

Tavares is going to be entitled to superstar treatment each and every night and allowed to work through his problems as long as it doesn't massively cripple the team. It didn't in the regular season and the series is 2-2, so things look healthy on paper.

However, his extremely poor quality of play would suggest that in order for the Shanaplan to keep moving forward, Tavares needs to be traded. Otherwise it's just an annual game of letting half the support cast work and pretend like everything's okay. Even if it takes a first round pick and some minor salary retention, I think you have to consider it. If we could free up $8-$11 million this gives the Leafs such a new lease on life.

no matter how much worse JT gets, and how much more he inhibits the team from winning he will be in the starting lineup every night still. He has a free pass to “suck”
 
Can we blame this game on everyone whose favourite argument in favour of Tavares was that Stamkos hadn't scored either (despite leading his team in scoring chances)? It only took 60 seconds for that to blow up in our faces. :sarcasm:

Too many stupid penalties.

Tavares made a nice pass on Nylander's second goal.

Mathews also looks like trash. Totally expected this actually. He’s a pup playing with the big dogs.

As long as he doesn't cripple the team? He's crippling the team right now. We can't afford to let him work through it this time, he's complete deadweight on a line that NEEDS to score.

He played 13:50 and 16 shifts tonight. I know, lots of PK time and he doesn't PK but that's still ridiculously low for those circumstances. I have a feeling Keefe is losing faith quickly.

Tampa's D is the worst case scenario for Johnny boy, They effortlessly out muscle and out skate him all over the ice.

Long covid is real... maybe he is undiagnosed, but I know people who have it, athletic people, and they are shells of their former selves.

Grasping at straws here... cannot understand how he has fallen off like this. Has been completly ineffective this entire series. Looks frustrated... join the club John.

What moronic team would trade for Tavares? 11M a year for three more years? At the rate Tavares is declining, he won't even be able to stand up by the end of his contract. His skating is already so bad, it's painful to watch.

We are stuck with Tavares and his awful contract, there's no way this team can win him involved.

He sucked for long stretches in 2020-21 when you couldn't tell if JT97 or JT91 was the 41 year old.
 
Does anybody know where I can find the stats for Tavares' even strength primary points this year and ranked vs other in NHL? Also better with minutes too.

Could be, but he doesn't play hesitant... I don't feel he does anyway. He just looks overall slow, a little less quick than he used to be and not as strong on the puck as he used to be.
 
Near pt/game this season while playing 2C...average salary is like 5.6M if Leafs pay bonus July 1st...always a market for centres but the Leafs can no longer afford the luxury of an 11M 2C because of what covid did to cap projections.

17M left with 3 years remaining after buyout, but tough to see him waiving

Then again, tough to see him finishing out his contract if he doesn't turn it around
