As much as I rag on Tavares and have in this thread, it's not solely on him. Nylander has been bad for most of the series. Just watching him intentionally avoiding making plays because he's too scared of taking any physicality is how you lose games and series. If you have guys like that who aren't willing to put it all on the line, then you have shit shows like we did in game 4.

Tavares is playing like an old man, I guess he is way past his prime, slow as molasses, but even the effort isn't there. Nylander just plays to score goals when it's easy, on the rush, on a breakaway, on the powerplay, but refuses to give an effort on the forecheck, in 50-50 battles, he is too soft, lazy, would rather watch a play die in front of him than get hit.

Tavares is just too slow to keep up, has no drive, hasn't controlled play at all in the offensive zone. Usually he's good down low, tight in close around the net. Now, he loses simple 50-50 battles, gets beat to the puck so easily, gets knocked off of it so easily. Lets himself be a punching bag and shows zero physicality. It's not his game, but he's showing zero willingness to put it all on the line.

That's the difference right there, no willingness to put it all on the line, no killer instinct, no second gear, hell, Tavares and Nylander don't even have first gears right now.

/rant over. I'm done talking about Tavares and Nylander for the rest of the playoffs. I'm exhausted, no point in complaining about them anymore, they don't care, why should I?

Guess it's up to Matthews and Marner to carry the team in games 5, 6 or 7?

No offence to people here but you deserve a first round loss if you're calling out JT instead of others. Take away some of the dumb penalties and this game is a win and JT's defence today would be a big reason why we win if we stayed out the box.

His defence produced a xGA so elite that Mikheyev was able to ride it all the way to highest xGF% on the team while generating absolutely zero offence. Read that sentence again so you understand it fully.

I'm not going to tell you what to be happy with, but "expected" statistics are complete bullshit and it's really sad how many people they have entranced. but I digress.

I don't know if Covid or even having a child are major factors here. I think it's more likely it's just he's a below average skater with awful explosiveness playing against faster players. His play this series has been almost unacceptable with his pay and him being captain.

His deal is an issue for the team. He is not anywhere near an 11 million dollar asset at this point. I do not see what we do with that contract at this point because there aren't many options except let the deal play out.

I’d be very curious to see if the combination of a) new destination b) small cap retention aka Kessel money c) first round pick or prospect sweetener/another toxic contract return is possible. Just really want to be able to have an off ramp on the Tavares project so the entire Matthews Marner era isn’t knee capped until their late 20s.

I think management needs to explore all options at this point. Maybe Tavares is proud enough that if we sit him down and strip him of the C and ask him to waive his NMC he would? Who knows, even if that were to happen we would need a suitor. I would be willing to include a 1st+more.

Okay sure, but do you think he is trying and giving his all every game?

Everything Tavares does looks like there’s a lot of effort involved but there are a lot of forecheck shifts where I’d call BS on his work ethic. He’s hustling all over the ice, one steamboat late for every pass and he does the work hard fly by sweep check in the air instead of finishing any hit. You finish one hit on that shift and I call it a job done but no. Little area sweep check when the puck is already gone.

You feel he is not trying?
No that's Willy! You can clearly see it too when he just says fook it I'm not going in the corner.

Tavares just needs to take some shots. Just get it on net or go for some rebounds. His confidence is shot and he is a step late on every play.

So does he suck or just not trying his best? I don't know. And I don't care. Get it done or don't. That is how he will be judged. He controls that.
You don't care? You seem to care lol. You said earlier, he needs to have some pride... pride comes from doing your best not from being the best. I feel he is laying it all on the line... which is as much pride he can have... and he is NOT getting it done and he most certainly is being judged for it as you say. If I had known your comments were so empty I would not have followed up, apologies.

It's hard to tell with him. For his sake, I truly hope he's not trying, because it's sad to see him and know he's trying his best.
This is exactly why I was pushing @Marshy for an answer... I feel it is the latter, which is all sorts of troublesome for JT but more so for the team.

Lets not start bringing in Long covid bs to cover for an overpaid center and possibly most unclutch captain in our teams history.

His play has been on the downward trend throughout the years with us and it took a nose dive this season despite scraping together secondary assists and playoff freebies.

Guy has been given every configurable chance at different wingers, even playing double shifts with the teams cream of the crop elite youth 5 on 5 with barely a dent against the opponent. Skates in molasses and poor puck movement is making Tavares the easy anchor in our top 6 that is definitely sinking our potency.

He is one of many to blame, but his piece of the blame is getting more and more egregious by the game.

This is the best JT is going to be from here on out.

If we can't get out of the first round this year he has to go. I don't care NMC or not he has to either be a difference maker in games 5-7 or he's gone. You can't run it back with him as a non factor this series.

17M left with 3 years remaining after buyout, but tough to see him waiving

Then again, tough to see him finishing out his contract if he doesn't turn it around
It's not so much the salary, but how many teams can afford the cap hit, especially for what he brings?

JT has a no move clause and his wife’s family lives in Toronto. He is not going anywhere….and I didn’t even get to the part where a team would want him to begin with at that caphit…

Taveras is only 31, like he seriously can’t skate anymore at 31, damn thats horrendous longevity…he skates like he’s 41
