John Tavares doesn’t need to be a top contributor like Mitch Marner or Auston Matthews, but he does absolutely have to produce offensively. He’s playing with some of the top talents in the NHL on the top power-play unit and still struggles to score goals at even that level with the best players.
It’s good that he’s a face-off specialist, but if he’s not contributing offensively, then he’s not doing his job.
Keefe needs to put Nylander back with Tavares and stop trying to spread out the offense. Whether anyone wants to admit it or not, those two together do you have some chemistry along with Alexander Kerfoot.
Jason Spezza needs to be on the fourth line over Wayne Simmonds, put Mikheyev, Engvall and Kampf back together.
No offense to Engvall or Mikheyev, But those two are not top six for material, at least not yet. Just like William Nylander is Not a bottom six forward. It’s just bad coaching at this point.
At the end of the day, you can stand up for John Tavares and talk about this and talk about that, but if he doesn’t produce offensively, then nothing else he contributes really actually matters. He needs to contribute offensively and do so on a more regular basis. He’s not a bottom six forward that needs to chip in a goal every six or seven games, he needs to contribute like a second line player, that’s what he plays on, that’s what should be expected of him. He’s not bringing that, he’s not showing it on the ice.
People are giving him shit because he’s not performing at a level that he should be, not offensively, he’s not. Regular season stats don’t really mean much to me, he’s played on the top power-play unit with some of the most elite talent in the entire NHL, he’s going to get points just for standing there, that doesn’t impress me. Make a statement, win those 50-50 battles, make an impact, score a big goal, don’t struggle to skate up the ice and do so laboriously.
When he starts doing that, people won’t whine about him, it’s pretty much common sense. People were whining about Mitch Marner in the playoffs last season, but they absolutely had every right to do so, he was atrocious. Look what Mitch Marner did this season, worked on his game, developed his craft, decided to start being a factor instead of feeling sorry for himself. I know John Tavares is getting older, but it’s not like he’s 38, he’s got to start performing at a better level, that’s fact.
