I don't care about Kulak. I'm unhappy with Weber/Ed/Chiarot in the top 4. That's our problem.
Bringing in Merrill isn't going to improve this.

We need improvements on offense. If we brought in Connor McDavid, that would improve the offense but not the problem (which I agree with) of finding Weber a partner.

Not every trade will address every need. We have other needs to address in addition to finding Weber a partner. If MB hasn't found Weber a partner by tomorrow's trade deadline, then I'll complain about that.

I would argue we had two holes to fill on D:

1. get Weber a puck moving partner.
2. get Romanov a steady defensive defenseman as a partner

Hopefully this trade accomplished the 2nd.

This doesn't fix our big issues, but it's a good trade. I guess Detroit expects something out of Verbeek because a 5th rounder in a weak draft for a guy playing OK 20 minutes a night is not a good deal.

At least this will be good for Romanov. He'll finally get to play with a stable veteran partner he doesn't have to watch out for. I had enough of him having to make up for Mete shortcomings. He needs someone stable where he can get to just focus on his game.
Yes. It is positive from that perspective.

But it's still not what we need.

Holy overreaction, Batman! At worst it's a nothing trade. At best it provides some help. It's not like Bergevin traded Suzuki to get a bottom pairing guy. They gave up a pair of nothings for a guy who might help the team.
Ducharme himself has said he prefers Romanov at LD, because it allows him to step up and be more aggressive in the NZ.

So, unless Merill can play RD better than Mete, what's the point?

I've been calling for a Merrill deal from the Wings for the last week, nice deal. This should have Kulak open to being moved as well for more salary part of a package to get a PMD.

If we acquire a PMD and move just Kulak, that means Romanov is not playing.. But im Not sure it wouldn’t be such a bad thing for him to go develop his offensive game with Bouchard

He was probably going UFA and he had no interest staying in Detroit so the Red Wings get whatever they could (like the Edmundson trade)

I think the reality is that we played Romanov because we needed him there not because he plays better there.

Profondeur..

It's all good. GM Bergevin knows his ass is on the line if we fail to have success this year. He's not gonna settle. This should be his last stint with the team and the organization. At least, I hope so.

Merill play both sides as effectively from the Detroit beat writer

Improvement of our bottom pair wasn't a ''need'', and definitely not with a stay at home dman who isn't all that mobile and can't move the puck.

In Montreal, we don't believe in puck movement. Of course he's a Mete improvement defensively. But at one point, puck needs to be moved.

It's all about building a team.
Its tough to move the puck when you aren’t touch it. Seriously. When the opponent, dumped the puck in the end of the zone. Mete get it and was able to rush the opponen zone. But when the opponent decided to just attack the zone. Mete was stuck in his own zone and wasnt able to stop the cycling. That was hard to see.

Chiarot was fine when Weber was good, Weber isnt good anymore.
I think Weber is better than what we're seeing now and I expect this to be the case next season with a (hopefully) normal schedule. But yeah, he likely can't carry guys like Chiarot anymore.

Remember how I've been saying that we needed a blueliner?

This.... this is not what I meant...

Did you think this team only needed 1 blueliner? You didn't think we needed two blue liners - one to become Weber's partner and one to replace Kulak (or Mete) as Romanov's partner?

I know. In today's NHL, its too hard.

Upgrade over Mete, but that’s not saying much.

hoping he’s a fill-in for Chiarot until he’s back, then 7th.
Also hoping there’s an upgrade over Kulak incoming.

if this is the only move on D, then they’re better, but not good enough.

Eddy - Petry
Romanov - Weber
Chiarot -Merill
I definitely want to see Edmunson back with Petry and Chiarot away from Weber. Romanov is struggling with some things right now but I would not be against putting him back with Weber either since Weber is struggling with everything
