More useless shuffling the deck chairs...

Merrill could/should've been a cheaper offseason acquisition than Edmundson. Trading a pick for him now is more redundancy and does nothing to improve our chances against quality playoff rosters... Giving Yzerman assets for nothing.

Someone please put an end the this tenure of mediocrity
I know nothing of this guy. But I do know that Verbeek is nothing in Laval.4th liner in the AHL that is a copycat of Lekhonen. All speed, no hands.
I do think that we needed sandpaper to face the Figs, because they had none. Now they do. So all this player movement in Mtl is for naught if you ask me.

Sorry, but that is demonstrably false. Brook, Romanov, Leskinen, Guhle, Harris, and Norlinder, are all point producing Dmen that we drafted.
Bunch of late pick bums. They did once, momentarily believe when they selected Sergachev, until they didn't and switched him for Xavier LaFlamme.

Other than your personal insults you like to fling, you don't get it. We don't need him if we get a proper LD and move everyone down one chair. Then these guys are playing where they belong. It actually simplifies things without expending another wasted roster spot on yet another wasteful plug. If he is better than kulak who freaking cares. Get a #3-4 LD to play with weber edmonson goes back to petry and chairot goes to 3rd pairing where he belongs. How many times do we need to keep doing the same garbage. Weaver and gilbert improved this D group how much?

Move a damn 1st draft pick and get a guy we need. It won't do us any good in 3-5 years when weber and price are retired. Or admit you built a crap team, sell anything not nailed down and rebuild properly. I don't believe in "anything can happen if we just make the playoffs" you seem to. What is the point of signing a UFA when we are NOT making it out of this division. We may not even make the playoffs.

THIS is Burningbin covering his ass and hoping for a miracle.

Tell me where i insulted you, please lol. Last i checked, you came at me with your silly penguin gif and MB crap comment . Geez. The skin thickness of people these days is so pathetic. [MOD]

You have no idea what you're talking about. It's precisely because Chariot got hurt that our lack of depth got exposed.

Hypothetically...What difference would it make depth wise if we got the number 1 LD,pushed everyone down one spot and another D gets hurt. You'll still be forced to play someone you dont want like a Mete. You're still out a quality NHL D. Getting Merill isnt solving your lack of a top PMD- it's solving your poor depth/3rd pairing problem.

Also, no one is trading a #1 puck moving D for a 1st rnd draft pick. What dream world are you living in.

By all means, lets change MB. The next guy will be the same though. Just like Gainey, just like Gauthier, just like Savard....because unless we finish dead last- you arent getting the player you think can be traded for.

If you had that Dman or that forward-you wouldnt give him up for whatever you think MB should/can give up for that player.

But hey....continue the same song and dance if it suits you.

Just another year when the team needed milk and Bergevin came back from the store with a bottle of Coke Zero because it was on sale.

Expect the expected.
What are you bleating about? T Bay just gave up a 1st and 3rd for a defenseman who is older, slower, and more expensive than Merrill. David Savard has 6 points in 40 games, and is -13 for the season. Jon has 5 in 36 on a lower scoring team, and is +2 for the year.

Cool story, utterly irrelevant to the Habs needs, but cool story.

I was just thinking about the whole Verbeek father(assistant GM) and son thing going on in Detroit. Let's say Verbeek eventually makes that team at some point, I wonder how contract negotiations will go in the future, would make for some awkward situations between Yzerman and the Verbeek family lol

Well most of the posters on the Habs board seemed to think defense was a position of need at present. Can you imagine the wailing if Bergevin brought in Braydon Coburn instead? :(

Can you imagine having a GM that actually target specific player who fill a need on his team? Now that would be something.

Merrill is a minute crunching D man who can play either side of the ice. Under 30, with minimal contract. Good guy in the room by all accounts. What did they need more than that?

Agreed, but he just strengthened the third pairing pretty much for free and about 90% of the posts in this thread are trashing the trade.

How many bloody lefties does it take to strengthen the third pairing's right side? This is his idea of solidifying and adding depth to the top 4. He's not quite the puck moving leftie we needed to pair with Old Man Mountain. Do you think he's still shopping for more D?

Merrill played both sides in Detroit. Just under 20 mpg, and slightly MORE than the guy Tampa gave up a 1st and a 3rd for.

What the hell happened?

Detroit

This is a good trade the only issue is that it probably won’t move the needle.
Deadline deals are just grinding the bottom of the roster 90% of the time. Bergy did that without giving up significant assets. I count that as a win. Merrill could be the perfect partner for fellow Michigan native Jeff Petry. Maybe he can be another late bloomer. Petry never scored more than 25 points in a season up to the age Merrill is now.

From an Arpon Basu piece in the Athletic:

"Right or wrong, the Canadiens feel they can generate more offence with defencemen who are able to kill plays quickly, get the puck back and get it up to their forwards than they would with actual puck-moving defencemen, guys who skate it out themselves and create offence in a more direct fashion. They are bucking a trend in the game with this belief, but they don’t seem to care. Acquiring Merrill is simply doubling down on it."

Surely, if their theory is correct, it requires quick and energetic forwards, providing constant puck support. Can the Canadiens forward group any longer be described as quick and energetic?
