Some of these posts are jaw dropping, especially early in the thread as some of you freak out because he didn't score 42+ goals in the OHL and you've never heard of his name before till now.

Most scouts had him near 13-16 and I think we got great value for a 6'2 center, two way and is more of a goal scorer than a quick glance at his stats show. I'm very confident we have 60pt center on our hands here

Love the pick

His numbers for Forsberg are wrong,he played 42 SuperElit games and had 41 points a lot better than 0.17 ppg.

Technically he is correct, he said draft year, Filip played 36 games the year before his draft year in the superElit, in his draft year he only played 6 games of superElit and had one assist.

In his draft year Filip played in the Alsvenskan league which is a tier below SEL (basically there is a cap as to how many teams can be in the SEL and every year there is religations and promotions where teams from Alsvenskan league can earn a spot in SEL, so in his case his team was in the lower league but still a good league for a 17 year old to be in)

People be patient with Ek, he is a good pick, has really good tools and is in the right place to develop in Sweden. Farjestads is a good program.

Also he was a riser and we know how much this team likes players who rise.

Video sure shows a typical Wild safe boring pick. Another 3rd - 4th line center... Brodziak replacement
;)

Could always throw up a Koivu highlight reel. It'll make him look like Mr. Dynamic. Or maybe I could throw up a Rob Schremp one, to really get people into it. The point I'm trying to make is that highlight videos always make the player look good, usually offensively.

The only reason I'm not really huge on this pick is because of his slow skating, which will likely slow the pace of his line down at the NHL level. We're a team based on speed. If it improves, I'll be happy with the pick. I was just really hoping for a guy who could fly.

Centers who can fly, are offensively and physically gifted go in top ten if not top five.

Drafting 20 or later, this is what you get. All we can do is cross our fingers and hope for the best. He's a Swede and has the character to show we can expect him to not fail but has an unknown ceiling. I think its a quality second line center pick / prospect.

This. What are people thinking you get 2/3 through the first round?

The guy will be flawed. Your center options are a smaller skilled Canadian who probably will be shifted to wing, a bigger guy with all the tools but hasn't put it together due to hockey IQ/attitude/consistency, an effort guy who tops out at as a two way 2nd liner, guy who is still growing, or an underscouted European.

We went with a combo of the last two.

Ranked #15 by Hockeyprospect.com
Ranked #20 by ISS Hockey
Ranked #23 by Future Considerations
Ranked #16 by McKeen's Hockey
Ranked #4 by NHL Central Scouting (EU Skaters)
Ranked #23 by TSN/McKenzie

Some had him slightly lower than 20... Slightly higher than 20... Or at 20. We drafted him pretty much exactly where most scouts predicted.

I do like that Craig Button had him ranked #13.

There are plenty of bigger centers who aren't burners who do well in the NHL. Koivu has us worried but Ek seems like a better skater than Koivu was at the same age.

I didn't say anything about offense or physical gifts. I had speed and offense rated above physical gifts (size and physicality), and so I was slightly disappointed when we passed on Konecny. Not so much that I went here to post a fit, but just a little, because I really liked Konecny. I think that's a pretty rational reaction.

That said, this guy may end up being one of my favorite Wild players ever, but until we see what he has, I'm reserving judgement. I'm not thrilled with the pick, but I don't hate it either.

Getzlaf was drafted @ number 19, sometimes these kids don't start blooming at an early age. Just because he's a 20 pick doesn't mean he can't bloom into a top line center.

People need to give him time to develop. he has a good skillset and a good attitude he will be a good one for us.

plus he played in a MENS league at 18

I like the pick. When Konecny dropped I hoped we would have grabbed him, but I've no problem with taking Ek. Even if he doesn't reach his full potential and becomes an excellent #3C, that is not the end of the world for a guy picked at #20. I really do believe that for the skeptics of the pick he is going to be a nice surprise when he does come over here. After he does adjust to the smaller North American ice I think that will play to his strengths well.

The thing you have to remember is that you can't train or teach SIZE and natural scoring instincts that he seems to possess while you CAN teach speed and footwork. Remember how Granlund was 30% faster coming into his second season after doing hella workouts and working with a skating coach? Ek can get faster, bigger, stronger, and he will still retain his scoring ability, something that we need. I personally love the pick.

Totally. So vanilla. Graovac 2.0. When we could have had the next PMB. :)

Knock Bouchard all you want, but he still holds the record for most assists in a season and is in third place for scoring leaders. He also scored 20 goals, more than Granlund and Coyle have done in their careers and at an earlier age too.

Fair on Granlund, but comparing him to Coyle isn't.
