Player Discussion Joel Armia turnaround year?

Some interesting comments in the Athletic today...Pierre Lebrun spoke to some front office executives and their consensus was that it would be difficult for him to make more than 4.5M given the flat cap and his limited offensive ceiling. Another one said right around 4M.
One brought up Jordan Stall as a comparable given their similar numbers, but while Stall is at 6M/yr...he signed that deal (10yr/60M) two CBAs ago.
I think after seeing the RNH contract, we can agree that Danault can probably be had for 6 years at 4.75 ish. It's a hefty price to pay but given what he's done in these playoffs and the setup of our team, I'd give him that.

I don't agree with that. He's not Radulov. He's bought into this core and developed with us. I am confident he likes it in Montreal and will stay if the deal is fair to him and for the Habs.
You won't convince me he is that self centered type. But he's certainly looking for more than $4M AAV which I believe is fair to the hard work he has put into his career.

Pretty sure is gonna stay here. .. montreal won’t offered him 3 millions but something around 4.5 for 6 years. He gonnas left 500k on the table maybe on ufa market. But at what price? That my bet

"self-centered"? Almost every athlete is far more than the average citizen.
And even if you take that out of the equation you have one chance in your pro career at your big payday. What do you do? you take it.

I did read that, Lebrun is an excellent sports journalist.
The flat cap is one variable. The other is Danault's superb play leading his team to the Cup final.
Two opposing variables. So interesting how that will play out. It only takes one team to offer him a nice fat contract.

There is nothing wrong with Radulov, Danault, or any other athlete maximizing their lifetime earnings.
Radulov also did end up signing what was a perfectly fair contract. He just didn't get it from this organization since they decided to low-ball him until it was too late.

Every team is looking for Armia type of players. Big, skilled in tight areas, good on the PK... it would be a mistake to let him go.
He's bought into this core with him as a part of the core playing on the first line. I'm unconvinced he's bought in to this core to be a seat warmer for Kotkaniemi in the top 6 until he loses that role and becomes a permanent shutdown 3C.
That's not me judging him as a self centered person, that's just my view of things when he's been very clear about wanting to be a legitimate two way forward in a top 6, not just a shutdown guy. The money and role is probalby not there in Montreal in the long term, and if that's what he wants (and that's perfectly reasonable to want it), he's probably going to end up elsewhere.

One of the biggest issues from this team is that the only offensive threat at C is Suzuki. So it will be a decision between Danault vs KK as third line C, because as of now, none of them truly deliver offensively to keep them as top 6 C (KK has scored his goals these playoffs, but his lines never seem to create much offense collectively).
You either trade KK + for an established top 6 C and convince Danault to stay and get paid strictly as a shutdown D. Or you let Danault go, keep KK as third line C until he figures out how to win a board battle/shoot the puck/make a pass, and use the money to add a top 6 C somehow.

I'm not comparing athletes to average citizen. I'm comparing athletes to athletes and how a guy like Radulov might be after the most he can get while a guy like Danault likely prefers to stay in Montreal.

If the rumour of him turning down that offer is true, I'll definitely agree. I always figured Danault to be the type to give a hometown discount.
I would suspect Danault strongly disagrees about this. The Habs are and will be more balanced in deployment than other top 6/bottom 6 teams for sure, but he's been the unquestioned 1st line center for the Habs for 3 years and has played with our two best wingers over the bulk of that time.
If he ends up on a shutdown line with Lehkonen and Evans while Suzuki and Kotkaniemi end up with Toffoli, Caufield, Gallagher, Anderson, etc. I think that will absolutely feel like a demotion and like a 3rd line role.

Pageau plays with Zajac and Palmieri and they are listed as the "3rd line".
I'm not worried about Danault. Both sides will find middle ground. I think it's insulting to call him some 3rd line center and it's also too much pumping to call him a complete 2nd line guy. I'm not a fan of the line labeling for so many NHL players. So many players move from 2nd to 3rd listed lines all the time and I feel the Habs are more build like the Islanders where we roll lines and use them depending on match-ups

I see this on other boards too with a fan base. On the arizona cardinals forums the fans talk about players being "reasonable" and offer up all kinds of suggestion for what the player should sign for LOLFixed it for you

With him asking for a bigger role (more offensive) in the past season and not getting it, I'm not sure where this "wanting to stay" comes from.
I would suggest he's more than willing to bail. Of course it will come down to money. Would you leave a million or so on the table with a once in a lifetime chance to cash in? I doubt it.

I don't blame them. I do the same in my real life. So I can't expect anyone else not to do it in theirs. It's just once in a blue moon, you'll see a player sign a team friendly contract.
