A good portion of this board turned him on very quickly.
I still like his upside and potential. Maybe it's because I never compared him to Joe Thornton that I didn't feel let down by a sophmore slump. Either way, I think he rebounds this year.
I like his upside and potential too. But the idea that people only soured on him because he didn't improve is laughable. He had a hugely noticeable regression in the quality of his play.
I'm hoping Vesey can help get his competitive juices flowing. Sort of a one-up, can't-let-my-friend-beat-me mindset. Having him there should be good for Hayes.
I feel like Hayes was out of shape and played catchup all year. It happens. And even then he still played well.
I expect a great season from him this year tbh

I think most sophmore slumps involve a degree of regression. It's why I also think that a players third year is often the most critical. They either make adjustments, or they don't and it's usually a pretty good indicator of the direction their career will take.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying anyone should be thrilled with Hayes sophmore effort or that he's beyond criticism.
It's the extremes that amuse me.
I think in Hayes' case, so much of his struggles seemed to stem from a lack of effort, interest or desire. We have seen what he can do based solely on talent. We all want to see that talent when combined with a motor. And that's where the frustration and criticism comes from.
Going off his comments in the offseason, as well as now having Vesey, I would think that Hayes has found a motor.
Yet to be seen, of course, but I would bet he has found that motivation now.
I think we all hope that's the case. To me, the only thing keeping Hayes from being an impact player is Hayes.

I think AV realizes that too, which is why he made the comments he did at the media break-up day.
AV knows Hayes can be an impact player. He said Hayes is part of the future of this team, but Hayes has to be one to show he's capable of it.
What comments did AV make?
Just a short blurb, but it's enough to extrapolate that AV knows that Hayes can be a great player for the team, but Hayes needs to bring it.

Go to the AV interview. The bit about Hayes starts around 5:58.
Trying to listen to that...is that a type writer? Who the hell uses a type writer these days?
is it a camera? is it tape being unrolled? really tough to figure out what that sound is.
Sounds to me like camera clicks in a super-reflective room.
The camera clicks are loud. But it sounds like a quieter clicking is happening in the background. Almost like a keyboard or something.
Couldn't those just be camera clicks that fall less in the pickup pattern of the microphone?
Kid is already disrespecting Rangers legends.
