Imagine if we still had saarella and those 2 2nd rd picks? Future would look even brighter

Seriously, what an absolutely horrible trade in hindsight. Eric Staal was utterly useless.

Would have better off keeping Saarella and the 2 2nd round picks, and trading Yandle at the deadline if they NEVER planned on resigning him.

Trading Duke for Yandle I'm fine with because we were going for it and had a pressing need for a PMD plus Yandle was a productive player when he was here. Eric Staal deal on the other hand can't be defended.

In fact, i wouldnt be surprised to see a similar trade made by us in the next month involving one of our young forwards for a pmd

We were 2nd or 3rd in the East at the time of the deadline. It's a hard sell to guys like McDonagh, Brassard, Stepan and co that we are trading a very good player in Yandle whilst being in the position we are in.

Not sure what gorton and co were thinking. Almost all of us on the forum knew it was awful

- Eric Staal wants to be traded to the Rangers only
- Rangers have no cap space, salary retention is needed
- Carolina wants to trade him to at least get something for him
- Somehow Carolina has leverage to get 2 second rounders and a prospect

Rangers front office was just too eager to get it done

That's the preferred narrative right now.

1) The Rangers are old. Only two forwards over the age of 30...Nash and Glass, and neither is guaranteed being here at the start of the season. Staal and Girardi are the only D-men over 30. Then there's Henke. Meanwhile, it's likely that Zibanejad, Miller, Vesey, Buch, Skjei and McIlrath, all under the age of 23 will be in the lineup on opening night.

2) The Rangers need scoring. 7th in the league last year, and one of the top scoring teams the past three years since AV took over. They are one of the best 5-on-5 teams over the past few years, also.

3) The Rangers are cap-strapped. $3.1 million or so under right now. The have two anchor contracts in Staal and Girardi. But, the have many young players signed to reasonable deals, and could gain quite a bit of additional cap space if and when they move Nash.

4) They have no #1 picks. They have all #1s going forward, and while trading away #1's for four consecutive years, they still managed to add Buch, Hayes and now Vesey, all of which appear to be 1st round talents. And, there is still the wild card of Sean Day, a player with 1st round abilities that likely needs maturity.

But, none of that fits the HF narrative.

Great post

I've noticed that myself. I don't understand wtf this team ever did that makes all the hate towards us. What, did we win so many Stanley Cups that they are jealous/????? I don't think so.

It's quite simple -- the Rangers were hated in the pre-cap days because they overpaid for player, luring them away from their original teams and loyal fans because they had the money to pay them the kind of money they could retire with.

Remember, this is a team that "bought" the Stanley Cup when almost every previous champion used drafting and maybe one trade or two to win.

The Canadian media will always hate the Rangers and Sather because the Rangers arent a very Canadian-centric team and throw money at Canadian stars. They don't have good luck with CHL draftees, many who were followed by the Canadian media since they were kids. That's why NHL network/Radio is a Tavares suck-fest -- both are Toronto-based (although NHLN is now in NYC, but most hosts/commentators are Ontario NHL'ers).

Lastly, they're NYC's marquee team. Everybody outside of the city has learned to hate NYC teams for whatever reasons -- the Yankee Dynasties, the arrogant '86 Mets, the Knicks being the Knicks, etc. Only the Giants get a moderate amount of love because they are a class organization and own the Patriots, and every non-New England fan hates those turds.

Basically, it's a pervasive anti-NYC bias in the media that has been around for a century couple with the Rangers' penchant for outspending everyone.

But to be fair, every fan thinks their team is hated on the main boards. Oilers fans especially.

Hey do you need help getting down from that high horse of yours? Please tell me how it's ignorant to think Drury was a huge failure here. Feel free to back your argument up with stats and our overall performance while he was top 6 forward here making the money he made.

You say ignorant I say moronic

Because he wasn't a huge failure, especially in his first season. The fact he broke down with thousands of hard miles on him is not his fault. The fact Sather signed him to a stupid contract wasn't going to make him the player you wanted him to be. Before the injuries struck, he was the player he always was. And he was a classy and dignified captain. You're perpetuating the same tired and ignorant viewpoint that signing a big contract should have made him a better player and he was a bad captain because he didn't rain fire and brimstone.

Very good post. You answered my question. Thanks. There used to be REAL hate over at the tsn comment section when they used to allow comments.

I love how the islander board was so excited to get Vesey and they kept saying he is a great player will be an awesome addition to their team....then he signs with the rangers and the isles board starts saying oh well he's not that good and will be a failure and he stinks :shakehead:shakehead gotta love it:handclap:

Everyone is saying that. Reddit, HFBoards, Twitter, etc.

It's amusing.

With his addition to our third line AV has always said he likes Duo's so I'm thinking

Step - Kreids
Zib- Zucc
Hayes - Vesey
Lindberg - Fast

Fill the rest in accordingly

You know it's true

I hope Gorton advises AV which forwards have to play, and where in the lineup. If not, I think he might include Glass in the lineup, Fast in the top 9, Gerbe and Grabner over Buch and Vesey.
