As has already been noted, Theodore was left off more ballots than Iginla:

There were 62 voters for the Hart Trophy. Iginla placed 23-18-12-5-3 (61 ballots). Theodore placed 26-16-9-5-2 (58 ballots). They finished tied with 434 points, but the tie-breaker goes to whoever has most first-place votes. Had all voters included Iginla and Theodore on their ballots, Theodore would have won (barring Iginla getting a first-place vote, and Theodore receiving 4 fifth-place votes, which is highly unlikely).

The second part of this myth, that a Montreal writer intentionally left Iginla off the ballot, has no basis in reality. Not only were votes not made public until 2018 (long-overdue), but it would imply that the voter knew it would be close enough that omitting Iginla would be enough to give Theodore the win. That again seems unlikely, and again with Theodore being left off 4 ballots, who is to say several Calgary writers didn't do the same thing?

McDavids historic performance transcended the fact that he was on the losing team. No other Oiler did that. We dont just look at raw statistics and give it to a guy on the losing team as a result. Bobrovsky and Barkov did more to win an actual Stanley Cup than Bouchard or Hyman did. McDavid was so great that he won it but there is no case for Bouchard or Hyman being on anyones ballot when they didnt win and neither one consistently carried their team throughout. Bouchard had 6 goals and 7 first assists. 19 second assists. That isnt enough play driving to be over Barkov or Bobrovsky.

Not he just have to take a lucky guest if there is 0 cost to left someone of the ballot and ready to manipulate the process, why not ? You really does not need to know that it will be close, just think that it could be, but they probably have a really good idea, they speak to each other and about this can of stuff, so they have some pulse. Betting odds maker know less and are usually really close.

The Oscar went with the following solution for a while, a voting system so complicated to understand (and built to be hard to game) that people would stop, for which you can put your actual favorite movie first even if it as no change to win, putting the one with a chance second without hurting its chance at all.

NHL Player Stat Leaders, 2023-24 Postseason - ESPN kind of supports this claim if you're giving the Conn Smythe as a Playoff MVP award which, well, it is. Make a Finals MVP award and that solves the problem. Only issue I see with the quoted post is that if we're going purely on stats alone, Leon should be in there long before Hyman.

Like I said over a week ago, McDavid's winning the Conn Smythe and hell, how the hell doesn't he?
