Maybe, but I would rather not rush him.
Don't think we have anything to wait on if he wants to come out. By the time he's up for an extension if he proves to be a player we'll have a ton of cap space.

He might get a taste of playing on a playoff team before the rebuild.

Man Dallas sure nailed that 2017 draft grabbing Heiskanen, Oettinger, and Robertson back to back to back!

I have a friend in Dallas and I use to feel sorry for him. We crushed about 5 drafts in a row while they shat the bed. Then the script totally flipped in 2017.

It isn't just about managing his ELC. It is about letting him develop at his level.

OTOH, I would like to see if he could develop as a C. Not sure if he is playing there with U Mich or not. Maybe signing and playing C for a year with the Moose would make the transition successful.

McGroarty is probably good enough for our top 9 next year if he's willing to leave after 1 year.
Considering half of the top 9 are probably gone next season there should be LOTS of opportunity to make the team.

Scheifele and Dubois are 99% gone IMO.

Connor may very well ask out instead of sticking around for a torched earth rebuild. Ehlers may follow suit.

Maybe somebody takes Wheeler.

As good as McGroarty has been this year, he is more of a secondary player. I wouldn’t rush him. Let him develop as a primary force for Michigan before moving on.

Agree but I would sign him, play him on the Moose and not send him back for another season. His production is of a player who is ready for the next step and with NCAA prospects I'd rather sign them as soon as possible to take away the temptations of playing in NCAA for 4 years and walking to UFA.

I fully expect the Jets to try to sign him this summer considering their previous track record with NCAA prospects. They generally don't drag out that part of the process looking at Trouba, Connor, Roslovic, Lucius and even guys like Samberg who they were trying to sign earlier than he eventually signed.

In hindsight that slump the Jets went on in Jan and Feb might have been a blessing in disguise. Without that I am pretty sure the Jets would have considered moving Lucius/Lambert/2023 1st and even McGroarty. I was fully onboard with them moving some of these prospects/picks for "one last shot" with this group. If the Jets were gonna crap the bed on the season I am glad they started doing it in Feb instead of March when it would have had worse long term impact on this franchise.

Imagine the mood if the Jets were playing like they are right now but they had moved Lambert and the 2023 1st at the deadline!

I haven’t watched enough of him this season to have a properly informed opinion but when has that ever stopped me.

My gut is telling me one more season at Michigan would be best for his development.

He's not blowing the doors off or anything in college. Kyle Connor dominated in college in his draft +1 year - far better than anything McGroaty has shown so far - and he still spent another year in the AHL. It wouldn't be a good idea to bring him to the NHL for next season.

They will just bring in stop gaps if they trade a few of their forwards. The worst thing the organization could do is bring up non-elite prospects to fill the gaps on a likely terrible team potentially ruining their development.

McGroatry still has WJC eligibility for 1 more year. If he signed a 3 year ELC it would still be able to slide if he plays all season with the Moose. He would not gain any Free agency years. He might as well stay with Michigan as they have a strong program and he can mature further.

We don't need to be rushing our prospects:

McGroarty needs another full year of college and then probably a season in the AHL.

Lambert will need a season to two seasons in the AHL.

Lucious needs at minimum one more year in the AHL.

These guys are non elite prospects and should be developed as to try to get the most out of them. We are going to need that if we see a mass exodus of core players over the next year.

There's nobody outside of Chaz Lucius that I would consider for full-time pro duties right now. Do we even have any graduates from the Junior and overseas leagues that could conceivably come over? Salmonsson maybe? Wagner?

I don't think so. Lucius has missed so much time the past few seasons that I don't think it would be wide to have him play in the NHL next year. Maybe a taste of a few games?

I'm thinking Heinola will be the only player with a chance to start in the NHL next year, assuming the Jets trade one of their starting d-men in the off season.

Talking more about AHL than NHL right now. The AHL is a pro league, after all.

It’s got to be such a good feeling for Lambert and his overall psyche after the struggles over the past couple of seasons. He’s genuinely having fun again, being one of the main drivers on a juggernaut team.

I think both Lambert and Guenther have really all bought in. It is really great to see these two work off each other as well. Honestly I thought Lambert was going to be an elite shooter for us, one of the 'pieces'. But with him being a Center, he really is the guy that makes our game go. His Speed and playmaking ability is just so disruptive, that he is able to open up avenues for his teammates as well.

Interesting perspective as many Finns on HF felt that he had very poor hockey IQ and had no idea how to use his teammates. It was pretty vitriolic stuff. His time in Liiga sure didn’t help his development at all. Lots of us are happy for him. The last couple of years must have been tough on him. Happy for the ‘Birds too.

Another big game tonight. Would love a statement win against Kamloops on the road. We’re gonna need Brad, Dylan and the rest to be at the top of their game.
Thanks again for the updates. It is great to have a team fan posting their thoughts. And just think how fun the Memorial Cup will be, as you will have a good part of the Jets fans locked in and supporting.
