Dont blame Vesalainen. He is not doing anything in the NHL. IMO was not put in a position to succeed but did little to earn better icetime either.

Might get a 3rd or 4th rounder for his rights :( Chevy's 1st 1st round bust.

Yea he is the first outright bust but Stanley and Roslovic have not done anything to help the Jets cause either so I would say we have had 2 misses and one outright bust. Roslo has found a home in Columbus but he faded to black here. Stan is still a work in progress so there is always hope I guess but we need to start doing way better than this.

Vesalainen simply not good enough to make the jump to NHL level. Always seemed to be chasing the puck around the ice, and when he got possession couldn't make much happen.

I thought he would stick around the NHL, maybe land somewhere else, but getting a 1 way deal would have been hard for him anywhere. He's never been an explosive skater, which left him chasing the play more than carrying it, and adapting positionally to the NHL he was not the most adept at seeing the ice to create chances.

He wasn't coming back, that was written in his late season demotion. Might be a year for Torgersson to be ready to replace him. I'm hoping that Kristian Reichel gets a chance on the 4th line with Gustafsson to start. Maybe competing against Harkins and Toninato. That the Jets go into next season with the goal to play faster.

I’m hoping we give some prospects some chances and bring in new players so our bottom six isn’t just Apples/Harkins/Toninato/Lowry/Svech again

Problem is that Vesalainen was a top prospect. The prospect pool has thinned out, from promotion, departure and lack of picks. Out of last year's crop I thought only Barron and Reichel offered anything at forward. Gustafsson never got a chance. They'll be competing for spots, if the Jets don't improve through trade or free agency. Next season Torgersson will be a player to watch, and Lucius is getting his feet wet. Nikkanen is a project, but it's still thin up front.

Toninato is a vet who is getting his first one way contract next season, and could easily be demoted. I think it's likely that Svetchnikov and Harkins come back, as controlled RFAs.

So the difference is likely coming from a culture standpoint than personnel.

If the Russians don't come to Winnipeg there's going to be a further gap in talent with players nearing their end, if the Jets don't make a big trade for futures.

I'm not unhappy with most of those guys in the bottom 6. We know Apples can be better than he was last year. Harkins has always done well when lined up with decent players. On the 4th line, I think he tries too hard to do it all himself. Svech was mostly adequate to good with PLD. Toninato is a versatile player who works hard and is good value for the money. Lowry eventually broke out of his scoring slump last year.

I'd like to see more offence from our 3rd line. A more skilled C with Harkins & Apples could fix that.

with our roster, I could go for 3 pretty even lines and a energy line that the coach can trust and use regularly. Something like:

KC - Dubois - Svech
Hark - Sheif - Perfetti
Ehlers - Stats - Wheeler
Apples - Lowry - Toni/Barron

Top 3 lines, no particular order, all pretty even, and give all pretty even minutes. Which ever line is going more on any particular night gets a little more minutes. Creates more competition for the line to succeed. Nobody is over played.

I'd change some details, but the concept is good.

The biggest problem with the jets is they just don’t seem to have a plan. Just drafting best player available and not trading anyone until they want out of this winter shit/ he’ll show. Chevy needs to start making some moves are they closer to a rebuild or a long playoff run ?

That's the opposite of draft and develop. No other team struggles at luring free agents like the Jets. You only have to look at this offseason and what Edmonton and Calgary did to improve (cough, taxes). Chevy has probably kept his job because he's got key players to sign beyond their 7 year window in Winnipeg, by building a team that gets along well. He was aggressive last offseason with trades, it backfired for reasons that we don't know. Injuries definitely played a part, and it gets frustrating watching our best players go down to dirty hits, and there is no one to stand up for them, except Big Adam Lowry, who probably doesn't want to shorten an effective career by being a tough guy. So that would be something to address.

I think this is the final year for some guys, dictated by contracts. Then the rebuild starts...

When you say final year are you referring to Hellebuyck and scheifele before their lame duck seasons?

1. it might be a bit early to write off Vesalainen. Joel Armia didn't start preforming until draft year+6? Armia was a middle 1st round pick who lacked effort.

2. Vesalainen was a late first round pick. In terms of value, a late first round pick is closer to a late second than a top 10....

Closer to a long playoff run that will happen this year! :) Then they have decisions to make next year. Unless the offers blow us away, I can't see the Jets giving up on this season. They've built to a point where it is our window to contend. Not making the playoffs this year was a devastating blow. I think you switch out the coaches and try again with this group.

I do agree with your comment on drafting best player available. That strategy only works if you trade from an area of strength to address an area of weakness but as we are on most no trade lists, that task for us is more difficult than for most other teams. As a result I do think that we shouldn't reach, but unless there is a no doubter that this player is way better than the rest on our list, it would serve us will to look 5-7 years out and try to draft RHD with top pair potential and C's with top line upside because nobody trades those players away. You need to draft them.

We can get role players though UFA but we need to draft top of the lineup talent in the premium positions.

Looking at the next core hopefully you keep KFC, Ehlers and JMo around as the elder statesman. Then you have PLD, Perfetti, Lucius, Barron, Gus, Chib, Rash that hopefully fill out the top 9. The key being who else is a 1A/1B type C to match with PLD?

On D the left side looks great with JMO, Samberg, Heinola, Stanely, Chisholm, Kuzmin but the right side looks a lot weaker with Kovacevic, Gawanke, Lundmark, Bauer. Who is the top pair guy from that RHD list? There isn't even a guarantee that any of them are NHLers at this point so IMO we have a lot of LHD from taking BPA but we haven't yet been able to trade them to turn them into a top 6C or RHD prospect that we need and I think we may have a hard time doing that.

The NHL is funny now because you look at what a signed year vs an RFA or UFA year does for a player's performance, including here in Winnipeg.

Worse case scenario our stars shit the bed, and it's deadline deals for Chevy. Best case scenario it's a playoff push, and the value in the offseason is driven up by guys who see their end in Winnipeg coming to fruition. No way Chevy lets either his star goalie or 2nd leading scorer just walk. I guess the worst case scenario is always injury...knock on wood...

If 55 and or 37 are not getting new contracts then I don't see our team heading into the 2023-24 season with either player. I don't think the Jets are in a position to use either asset as an own rental. IMO we will need to make Hay this season and I am more than fine with a hard deadline.
