So what's Smith's status? He's UFA after this season, right? Will the Jets even attempt to sign him? There's staggering little room on the main roster for him, meaning he would most likely be in the AHL next season.

He is going to really need to work on it imo

The skating is the bigger concern. Possibly a fixable one, but a concern all the same. Kalakeche’s profile had summarized the issues as being mechanical:

Lucius’ skating is not terrible by any means, but it does require a lot of fine-tuning; his edgework is above-average, but he lacks high-end speed and explosivity. When he performs crossovers, he does not extend his back leg fully, catching less ice with each stride than a more technically gifted skater. Lucius has adapted his game accordingly by leaving the puck-carrying in transition to his teammates and positioning himself in favorable situations to benefit from their efforts. He also adapts his on-ice positioning quicker than most, leading to fewer skating-related issues.

Yeah, as mentioned he seems like a pure triggerman. Not sure how that will translate to higher leagues if he doesn't improve his skating. Also worth noting is if he will bring enough to the table when he osnt scoring.

He's an intriguing prospect but he has some glaring holes in his game that he needs to work on.

The only right shooting forwards the Jets have signed going into next season in the entire organization are Scheifele and Wheeler. The Jets will almost certainly try to sign him and for him there is good incentive to sign with the Jets instead of going elsewhere as there would appear to be lots of opportunities for him in this org based on the scarcity of right shooting forwards.

It won't guarantee him a spot on the NHL roster but if he is even close then the handedness is gonna help him get in the NHL lineup ahead of similar players.

1000% they try to sign him. And I believe he has another year before UFA, but I could be wrong.

He is eligible for 1 more year of college hockey.

This is his 4 th year after being drafted. It is also his 3 rd year incollege after being drafted as he spent an extra year USHL.

He could pull a Wheeler or Vessey and become a unrestricted free agent after his 3 rd year of college by declaring he is it coming back for his 4 th year and not signing with the Jets by Aug 15 th.

I’m not worried about the Jets not getting Smith signed. They do well getting their own drafted prospects under contract and I’m sure they’re impressed enough with his progression and signing him will be prioritized accordingly.
