Lucius bumped up to line 1 tonight
Something's wonky with the box scores for yesterday's and today's games and I haven't had the chance to dig through Twitter to see if he put anything up. How's he looking?

1G1A for Smith early in the second. Minnesota State just seems to be rolling over teams right now with Smith leading the charge. Coming into tonight he was 1 point back of the top scorer in the NCAA.

EDIT: scratch that, apparently he was already in a 4 way tie for top scorer coming into tonight.

He didn't put up anything yesterday and it's tied at zero so far tonight.

Interesting to see who Smith is ahead of in points.
He’s tied with Kent Johnson the 5th overall pick, and ahead of:
Owen Power 1st overall.
Marty Beniers 2nd overall.
Luke Hughes 4th overall.

Sure, Smith is quite a bit older but at least he’s hanging with the big guns.

2016 Kyle Connor loses to Jimmy Vesey for the Hobey Baker....still mad about this btw

2022 Nathan Smith loses to Kent Johnson for the Hobey Baker....the reverse Vesey

Tongue and cheek aside lots of season left, but what is impressive about Smith is he has been held pointless just once this season and Minnesota State played a good non-conference schedule to balance out their conference being on the weaker side.

I hope Smith wins the Hobey Baker, but if not and he loses out to the more highly touted Kent Johnson then I hope their careers mirror the careers of Vesey and Connor with the winner being the far less effective NHL player.

anyone have a legit scouting report on Smith? Most college players who have huge scoring bumps in senior years never seem to amount to much so hopefully Smith is somewhat of an exception

This is actually his third year not his senior year. But his age would be your typical college senior. I haven’t gotten to watch a full game of his since he was a freshman so I’m not much help on a detailed report. he was playing right wing at that time and it seemed like he was more of a pp specialist but that happens a lot in college hockey, it is a rugged grind it out style.

I am probably more of an optimist with regards to his age. We all know his story. He was playing high school hockey in Florida his senior year of high school. Also has my fellow Wisconsinite Max Giese ever led us astray?

Smith is scoring now? Hey, that's cool. Him being a Giese pick certainly eased the waters at the time and it's certainly paid dividends despite my issues at the time.

Is it too early to be talking about Jared Moe yet? He's had a sparkling stat line across his past 2 non-3 game seasons. Transferred to Wisco this year too and is really helping out a team that seems to be lacking in talent outside of Ceulemans. Could be the man behind Hellebuyck in a few years time.

Was ambivalent on the Nikkanen pick at the time and wanted Abruzzese at the time. Would have been cool to have 2 Nate Smiths.

I also understand that he was a 6th round pick but Tyrel Bauer wasn't anything inspiring at the time, still really isn't, and leaves a bad taste in my mouth when a guy I had in the first round in Veeti Miettinen went a round later and is currently giving the NCAA a what-for. Doesn't show up well for the guys who are supposed to be judging defensemen or the guys vetting forwards.

Lastly, I was not a big fan of the Torgersson pick at the draft and it's disheartening to see him start so..... poor? Like I don't know if he would get drafted in a redraft. I get his game isn't all about points but goodness.

Older yes, but those four all probably started playing ice hockey before Smith

So, Vesalainen and Harkins really dont contribute. Do you rotate them out (risk waivers) and bring up Gufstafsson or Perfetti or ???

It's been 5 years (counting this one) since we had a young player come on the team and eventually make an impact as a top-6 forward, top-4 defenseman. That is a really long time. Roslovic, Harkins, Stanley, Vesalainen don't appear to be those type of impact players. It might be time to bring up Perfetti for a look. Oh, and reduce Wheeler's minutes.

The last 4 games we have had 2G from Ehlers, 1G from Dubois, 1G from Toninato and you want to focus on a lack of production from Harkins and Vesalainen? Really?

Not my point at all.

I was speculating what this team could do to get it on track. Already been flamed on another thread for suggesting a shake up (trade or fire Maurice). So, Vesalainen and Harkins are basically bodies at this point. Rather than a shake up trade (not even commenting on what that could be) I wondered if swapping out a few 4th liners with different players (such as Gufstafsson or Perfetti) could add a spark.

OK, but I still think that is the wrong focus. Team needs a shakeup, not a little tinkering with the 4th line.

We have had plenty of player turnover over the years, but the coaching has been stagnant. It is time to try something different there.

Everyone talks about how bad a coach Claude Noel was and his inability to get another high level coaching job reinforces that. But considering the difference in the rosters between Noel and Maurice, I think Noel got better results - and that should speak volumes.
