Hello prospect lovers!
Question, if you are in the Jets brass, would not our new favorite player AKA next Lindros, (speaking of Walton of course) benefit more going to NCAA next year rather than play another year in CHL? I mean few players can really challange him in pure raw size, but NCAA is filled with big guys (just look at the US-team, Ralf is massive). 2 years in NCAA with their top facility and lots of training would do wonders, as long as he has a somewhat of an academic brain..

I give Walton 2398 suns out of 5 possible..

I don't know the rules around it, but maybe that's why they haven't signed him yet

If a player is drafted from the CHL and then goes to NCAA, does that now qualify them for the UFA loophole?
If a player is drafted out of the CHL, and becomes a college student before June 1st the following season (so same idea as if they're drafted out of the USHL currently), the player becomes an unrestricted free agent either on August 15th after their senior season (if they graduate) or June 1st 4 years after their draft (if they drop out).

So that would mean they either have to spend 4 (if they drop out or go to college immediately after the draft) or 5 years (if they spend one more year in the CHL and then move to college) after their draft to become an unrestricted free agent.

How does that work for Levis who committed to Bowling Green? Does that extend the window the Jets retain him without signing him?

Great question. According to a Scott Wheeler article in the Athletic, it sounds like the NCAA rules would apply, and the NHL team would retain their rights while they remain in college.

There is no NCAA loophole. The same option exists for CHL players as well... don't sign with a team for 4 years and you hit UFA. In fact CHL players have it even better, not signed in 2 years and you re-enter the draft, thus a good and sufficiently motivated CHL player can likely force a trade after 2 years instead of 4... just the incentives are different and likely the reason why CHL players haven't taken up that option.
