If someone just watched stats in junior after a player was drafted, then Nic Petan would have been a sure bet. But he put up points in junior in a way that doesn't translate to the NHL

Barlow's offensive skills aren't in question... it's a matter of whether he can play with pace and develop the defensive side of his game

I look at him and I hope for "a more engaged Tyler Toffoli"

Tyler toffoli was the exact comparable i had in mind as well

I'm not knocking Lambert. I still have hope that he makes it in the top 6. But I think other prospects are passing him. I think there is too much certainty about him expressed here.

There is a lot of certainty about Solomonsson as well.

I don't think Connor was particularly close in his draft+2 season, and Connor was undeniably a better offensive talent than Lambert. Some years, the team just isn't there for offensive output.

Salomonsson is having a splendid first AHL season, all things considered. Despite missing 7 or so games with an injury, he's 2nd on the team in scoring, with a very respectable 12 points in 17 games.

Lambert is working on his two way game as a pro center. A bit different than playing wing. I could see him slotting in as 4C if his defensive game is adequate. Much higher ceiling than gus or kup with the speed to be an effective pk and room to move up the lineup.

Connor in AHL in D+2 .85 ppg
Lambert in AHL in D+2 .86 ppg

I'm not saying he isn't doing well, I am just comparing him to another player that did very well in the minors.
 
It's good to see barlow get in a groove,looks like he is starting to understand his positioning in relation to his line mates,he seemed out of sorts the early games not understanding his role,to me he looked to try and pass when he was expected to be the trigger man.but non of them had a training camp together, he has alot to learn but firing home a one timer isn't one of them..

Is it bad that I get impatient and wish DD, He, and Walton were playing with the moose already? Barlow too I guess.

I feel like that moose squad will be firing on most of the cylinders… but then again, they’ll probably be without Lambert, Salo, or Chibrikov… so maybe it’ll be the same?

I wonder if there’s a way to statistically narrow down why previous iterations of the moose were good and this years has been less so…
(Aside from, “well, we scored more goals and let less goals in our own net.”)

Maybe he falls just short of being a top 6 player and doesn't fit a bottom 6 role. Like a Jack Roslovic.

A bit early to make a call on Lambert and good players adjust accordingly to available roles at different levels if they want to stick.

Yes. I'm not predicting a bust, or anything like that. I'm just questioning the level of enthusiasm and certainty for him that has been expressed here.

He is a promising prospect who has had some ups and downs. The downs are grounds for caution.

Yet you are praising Salmon. A player that hasn't played a game in the NHL...

Impossible to be certain about the vast majority of prospects, even the top of the top-end blue chippers.

But Lambert ticks some useful boxes:

- Pro speed
- Improving shot
- High motor and commitment to forecheck and tracking back
- Strong playmaking, puck skills and vision
- Solid positioning
- Will get stronger and more savvy
- Coaches now routinely note his high effort levels and coachability

He has his warts, but he's also playing on arguably the worst Moose team in recent years, with little defensive or scoring support, and IMO for a player like Lambert these conditions are likely to bring out some of his negative traits, like trying to do too much himself and thereby getting out of some of the good habits he's worked hard to develop.

I don't see Lambert as regressing notably from the All-Star player many here were excited about, development-wise, last year. But the team has been bad enough that he can't showcase those skills, so my concern is less about his counting numbers and more about team and player malaise.

Lambert's ceiling for me isn't Ehlers 2.0, but a variant of Chibrikov: a talented super-pest with a high motor who can disrupt, be a strong possession player who attacks aggressively with consistent zone entry success, and score at a high 2nd-line level someday. That's a very useful tool in a team like the Jets.

Maybe he doesn't get there. But I think he does.

But the Moose need to sort themselves out. Can't put out a product this awful and sell it to the public or players.

And Lambert has played 5. Big whoop. The 4 this year, he didn't disgrace himself. Didn't look very good either.

Salo's development has just been straight up. Lambert's has been up and down. That said, I could praise Lambert too. He is doing well. But my point is that the praise of him here is excessive. It is not that he is not promising. It is that too many people here seem to be too impressed with him. He is good, but not that good.

It's too bad Bonk, Molendyk, Akey, Dragocevic, Gibson and Price were all taken and the Jets had to settle for another one dimensional winger in Barlow in 2023... oh.
