Just reading through the new NCAA rules on this, players can make money or receive gifts from third parties (not the schools) or themselves using their NIL (name, image, likeness).

He could shout out a winnipeg hotel and get a free stay, shout out a restaurant on twitter or instagram and get a free meal, hold a hockey summer camp using himself to promote it and pocket the registration fees etc

Really nice podcast from The Athletic with a long interview with Jets' former scout Max Giese.

A few interesting points.

- Jets had Connor firmly in their top 10 when they selected him at 17. No real surprise.
- That year, Giese was really high on Border, ranking him close to Connor. Jets really wanted him at 25, but the Canucks chose him just before, so the Jets settled on Roslovic.
- Giese says he didn't get too focused on crazy production, and said scouts always need to consider how they project to the NHL. So a 5'8" player who isn't a great skater might put up great numbers, but doesn't project unless they have very special talent. He mentioned liking toolsy players who played "heads up" and had strong character to develop. Mentioned Poolman as having tools and great character, and Appleton as having size and tools and really played with good hockey sense.
- Said that he was really high on Lucius and was very excited when the Jets selected him. Said he was a great kid, and he really liked his skills. He mentioned again that the Jets really looked for players that can process the game quickly, in addition to the basic tools.

Thanks for pointing this out I'll have to try and find it to give it a listen.

Always loved Giese and was saddened to see he wasn't on the scouting team when I last checked the Jets' website. Anyone know why this is or what happened?

Watched a replay of the Can/USA semifinal from the World Juniors and Lucuis looked pretty damm good in that game and had a ton of quality chances but couldn't put one away. The puck was following him around and he was in good positions and was tough to handle in front and on the boards

If he can stay healthy, I think Lucius could be a really good top-6 F. Max Giese raved about Lucius in a recent podcast.

So I suppose our new key players will be:

Perfetti-Vilardi-Ehlers
Connor-Lucius-Lambert
Barlow-McGroarty-Chibrikov
Barron-Kupari-Rashevsky

Morrissey-Pionk
Samberg-Chisholm
Heinola-Salomonsson

DiVincentiis

Plus whatever assets we end up getting for 37 and 55. I still think we need to bottom out before this crop gets into the right window so that we can maximize value out of the next two drafts. Think we need a clear cut 1C and 1D type of prospect.

Might I add, that potential “third” line would be a buzzsaw of skill and motor.

Barlow, McGroarty, Rashevsky and Kupari are cut from that high energy cloth. Love to see it. Could sprinkle them into the top 6.

Dreger bought up "salary retention" during his draft recap as a hinderance to trading Helly and to a lesser extent Scheifele. As in, Jets unwilling to do that. I don't get it. It's a one year term. It's max $3m. We'll have ample space without 37/55 around. Hopefully they're just driving a harder bargain, but they have shown some inflexibility on this item imo.

alright. my oh six hundred trade of the day.

Connor Hellebuyck (25% retained), Logan Stanley

for

Alexander Holtz, Akira Schmid, Vitek Vanecek, #58 pick

Schmid's the value goalie here, Vanecek is value neutral at $3.4m but him and the $1.5m retained keeps NJD's cap space for Mercer and any others they need to sign. Seems fair. Odd that NJD would trade away three goalies in three days, but they'll sign a back up. Think they have another prospect around too - Daws(?).

They just traded Blackwood and don't have a backup. Don't see both goalie going out the door

They might be trying to weaponize cap space so they can take on contracts with draft picks like Chicago just did with Bailey. They also need to keep cash to slightly overpay the RFA’s they want to keep and UFA’s they want to attract. Winnipeg as a city doesn’t have much to offer, so paying more than market value might be inevitable.

I wasn't sure where to put this but I was thinking about what our team will look like in 5 years. It's impossible to predict but I thought I'd have a guess.

Barlow - Vilardi - Perfetti
Connor/Ehlers - Lucius - McGroarty
LW - Lambert - Chibrikov
Torgersson - Gustafsson - RW

Morrissey - RD
Samberg - Salomonsson
Heinola/Stanley - Chisholm

DiVincentiis?

There are some holes (1C, 1RD, G), but we have a decent prospect pool again.

there is none of the really high end talent here required to win the Stanley Cup..it screams mushy middle.

I agree. And to get those players, you usually have to tank. If you want a 1C & a 1D, you usually have to be bad to draft those players.
Right, and there are 10-12 teams in various stages of "tanking" over any 5-year time period, so you have to hope that you are tanking better than them. You might get Bedard, or you might get Simashev / Hayton.

High picks are no guarantee of getting the right elite players. But you don't generally get them without high picks.

Sure, but my point is that tanking is a very uncertain process, and can actually damage a franchise for an extended period of time, without assurance of a long-term payoff.

I think it's reasonable to explore other models for building a contender, including through the draft. My preference is for the Jets to add an extra 1st round pick (or equivalent) every couple or 3 years as they cycle out RFAs that don't want to stay long-term (e.g. Copp, PLD, Trouba) and try to hit on top players that way. Vilardi likely slots ahead of Glass (#6) and Patrick (#2) in his draft class. Lambert might end up top 15 from last year.

I guess my thinking is that when the rest of the NHL zigs, sometimes the best approach is to "zag". With so many teams tanking, maybe there is value in scooping up young talent depth from capped out contenders that tanking teams don't want to add.
