So long Gawanke, but what have you really done to earn a call up? Enjoy your career in the German league.

I don’t think there’ll be much interest in him from other NHL teams, but I’d gladly take a 6th or 7th if any team was willing to take him on as a reclamation project.

He won the defensemen of the year award for the Moose and led the league in goals by a defenseman. Let's not act like he was useless all of a sudden because we're grumpy that he left.

Yeah, he also earned atleast a cup of coffee with the big team. Even if he didn't get a game a week or two up with the big team would have helped the old pocket book. Ditto with Chisholm.

The weirdest thing to me regarding Gawanke is the point of time. I mean last season was the first season he was playing on a level on which he certainly played well enough to earn a callup. So naturally, and I doubt people would disagree, he to me would have had a callup almost guaranteed over the first 2-3 months into the new season. And wouldnt he now have to clear waivers starting this season? I mean If he truly deserves to stay in the NHL, some team would claim him. If the year sucked he then could still happily say "f*** the Jets" and then bold for Europe.

The point in time he chose might very, very well kill his chances to make it in the NHL which he still had a Chance to reach, although maybe not a good one with the odds against him. Now? Looking close to zero.

He was a great soldier for the Moose for years IMO you find a way to play that kid one game in the NHL so he can say he was there. I get it he wasn’t in the long term plans but he deserved one game IMO.

Wouldn’t that be the same blind loyalty that is killing the organization? You are 11th on the D depth chart but you have been a good soldier for the Moose so we will let you jump the players ahead of you to get some NHL games.

I don't know, his play warranted a cup of coffee so I wouldn't say that would fit under the blind loyalty category. Rewarding performance/strong play should be a staple in this org and he performed well on the Moose the last few seasons.

Over who? Heinola? He was 3rd on the Moose and has huge holes in his game. Just because he was drafted by the organization he gets a cup of coffee in the NHL?

They had that throw away game at the end of the season I think getting the kid one NHL game in his life before he leaves back to Europe is the right kind of loyalty. The wrong kind that hurts is keeping a coach so long he has to fire himself. To be clear I am not talking about having him make the team ahead of better options.

That is the conundrum as both Ville and Declan were indeed better. There still were some opportunities to call him up along side Ville and have him atleast practice with the Jets and collect an NHL paycheck. Ditto for Chisholm.

Just my opinion, but I think we need to end blind loyalty and entitlement in all forms. How many of our other draft picks on the Moose have "earned" their cup of coffee in the NHL? I would just like to see someone come in and make player decisions where loyalty and attachment to them through being a good soldier plays no roll.

I'll also add seeing the final game of the season as a throw away game just adds to the country club mentality of the team. The last team that should be taking their foot of the gas after the "great accomplishment" of sneaking into the playoffs is the Jets.

Well as someone who dislikes Mark’s weakness of loyalty over talent I am not going to die on this hill arguing the other side of the equation.

Hey they could have dressed Leon in the last playoff game since that appeared to be a throw away game too :sarcasm:

Not grumpy at all. Just don’t see him as anything more than a bottom pairing defenseman. That’s easily replaceable.

I’m sure there’s a long list of AHL award winners that couldn’t cut it in the NHL. He’s always been a meh prospect imo.

Yup. All he had to do was sign a QO and show up for TC. Jets would have had to play him or waive him.

At least one.

No one has said he should have been given a full time job. Just 1 or 2 games, a few days on the NHL roster. And no one has said he should have gotten even that "just because he was drafted by the organization". He played well enough to have earned that cup of coffee.

This is in no way about blind loyalty and entitlement in any form. Rewarding a player who has played well, not just been a good soldier, is part of the development process. It shows some appreciation for their efforts and also shows them how much farther they have to go to earn a job in the NHL.

Quite a few Moose have had their cups of coffee in the NHL, some quite a bit more than that.

I guess the best league in the world should be handing out participation trophies now...

Where did I say anything remotely like that?
"Rewarding a player who has played well, not just been a good soldier, is part of the development process. It shows some appreciation for their efforts and also shows them how much farther they have to go to earn a job in the NHL."

If he's not good defensively in ahl how do you think that will translate into the nhl? were trying to win games, you don't do that by rewarding guys that you know are not ready and you certainly don't put a guy in the line up to show him how much father away he is from actually making it...

Speaking of blind loyalty, why did we go back to Nathan Beaulieu for like, three seasons in a row? The lottery Ducks sent him to the AHL this year so they caught on. I know this is the prospects thread and neither of these guys are prospects but I have a bigger problem with playing Beaulieu for years than I would if they played Gawanke for one measly game if even just to see how he plays in the NHL and if he’s anywhere close to hanging up there.

I mean that is exactly what the org has done with countless forward prospects and depth forwards.

Guys who have performed well in the AHL at the forward position have all gotten opportunities to show what they can at the NHL level.

Guys like Perfetti, Conner, Roslovic all got advanced quickly. Yes they are the high pedigree players but the org has given numerous opportunities to depth forwards over the years.

Lemieux, Appelton, Lowry have parlayed their opportunities into long careers.

We have guven opportunities to numerous fringe guys over the last number of years.

Harkins, Gus, Reichel, Essyimont, Suess, Stenlund, maenalanen etc.

We don't do the same with our d prospects, many of which are as if not more deserving than the forwards that got there's.

For a fringe guy it's incredibly important to get noticed and its hard to get noticed if you don't play. Also I'm not sure this org has earned the benefit of the doubt with assessing d readiness. We didn't have any time for Kovacevik but he clearly showed he was ready to play in the NHL this past year. How long did it take them to make the correct call to play Snerg over Stanley? I don't know that they have a great handle on dmen.

A guy like Essyimont turning his opportunity into a full time job is exactly what Guys like Chisholm, Gawanke are looking for. It's worth 10× the cash they get in the AHL. It's incredibly important so I completely get the frustration.

This org needs to do a better job with its d prospects. Instead of bringing in expensive bad options to block them maybe play them and perhaps they surprise with the opportunity.
