Jets Management thread

  • If you are having issues logging in, we have found opening the log in page in a new tab/window rather than using the pop out should resolve these issues. We are working to get this resolved and thank you for patience.
  • Due to the increased volume of league transactions, the Trade Rumors and Free Agent Talk section is temporarily restricted to where threads may only be started by moderators and sponsors. We anticipate that this restriction will be lifted some time after the first round of the draft.
They used to list all their scouts...now they don't even list Hillier or Ratchuk, who are the Directors of Amateur and Pro Scouting respectively (last I heard, anyway).

It looks like they removed the scouts from the site around the summer of 2023...so before the 2023-24 season. Bones was heading into his 2nd/final year as HC.

So at the end of the 2022-23 season, the Jets had:
  • 11.5 Amateur Scouts (10 "Amateur Scouts", 1 "College Scout" and 1 "Pro & College Scout" - that's the 0.5)
  • 5.5 Pro Scouts
  • 1 "Scout" - Evgeny Bogdonovich, who'd been listed as "Head European Scout" from 2011?-2022. Long time, anyway. I assume he still was scouting Europe, they just changed the title for some reason?
  • 1 Director of Pro Scouting (Pete Ratchuk)
  • 1 Director of Amateur Scouting (Mark Hillier)
  • 1 Scouting Coordinator (Barrett Leganchuk)
  • Total staff: 21
In 2016 the Jets had:
  • 12 Amateur Scouts (including Comeau, and a "European Amateur Scout")
  • 4 Pro Scouts (including a "European Pro Scout")
  • 1 Head European Scout (Bogdanovich)
  • 1 Director of Pro Scouting (Mark Dobson)
  • 1 Director of Amateur Scouting (Mark Hillier)
  • 1 Coordinator, Scouting and Hockey Video (Barrett Leganchuk)
  • Total staff: 20
In 2013:
  • 13 Amateur Scouts (including Hillier, who was "Head Amateur Scout")
  • 5 Pro Scouts
  • 1 Director of Pro Scouting (Dobson)
  • 1 Director of Amateur Scouting (Comeau)
  • 1 Head European Scout (Bogdanovich)
  • Total staff: 21
The Wayback Machine is giving me lots of trouble looking back farther than this. But Seems like the total staff has been pretty stable around 20 or 21 scouts. Amateur scouts slightly fewer, going from 13 to 11.5 over the years. That Leganchuk guy does video scouting...and "coordination"? Which may mean he sees some guys on video and dispatches some scout to get live eyes on him...? They dropped the video part from his title in the last known listing, so maybe he just books their hotels?
I found this on the net….

Cheveydayof announces new Amateur Jets scout!

Resume has many merit badges!

No one is asking you to do that

The rankings in that draft were all over the place in that draft just like this one… the point is that Jarvis and Lundell have developed into the elite prospects in that class… is that analytics or their internal development structure?

The team I list - Dallas, Florida, Carolina, Vegas - do seem to be developing players better than the Jets… its not just luck of the draw.

We are about to trade Helle for a guy we passed over in the draft or a 24th pick - which I find ironic since our lack of drafting success is often written off as ‘oh we never have a high pick’… yet other teams are finding and integrating these guys into more competitive teams than us
the fact we're even talking about Vegas, Dallas, FLA being similar to Winnipeg is the problem. Even if they're all equal or a notch above/below, that's brutal from WPG POV.

If WPG is roughly the same as all these other teams on the draft-and-develop side, plus unable to be players in FA, plus unable to trade players freely, plus unable to find their own diamonds-in-the-rough, that's v problematic. Id take Dorofoyev over any Jets drafted player over the same time frame, and he was a 3rd round selection. Then add trading for Hertl, Eichel, Marner, Andersson, etc - this is why WPG just can't be ~equal in draft+develop... in an "all else equal" NHL, different discussion.

Also, ppl still seem to want Vegas prospects in trades for players. do any team's want WPG prospects for their players :dunno:. Maybe that's why Heinola wasn't ever traded when it was pretty predictable he was going to be relatively unused by WPG from 2021 :dunno:

Except thats not what we are talking about at all haha...

The entire conversation is about ‘why’ do Vegas, Dalla, Florida and Carolina all have more hockey ops/analytics/scouting staff than Winnipeg… when our bread and butter is draft and develop

Waiting on a potential Helle trade, I was thinking how Chevy does very well in these type of player for player trades (ie nor talking about TDL rentals, where all GMs overpay). Got me thinking, in his 15 years as GM, has he lost any player for player trade?

Trouba - I think Chevy did fine/good

Kane - I think he did fine/good

Laine - Very good

PLD - Very good/home run

Has he lost any player single player for player trade yet (excluding TDL trades)?
