Meh
On opening day there will be a guy behind the Jets bench. He will be a guy who has done it before.

HC thing is done. Time to move on to assistants, drafting, trading, etc.

Edit: Sometimes dyslexia is interesting.

Maybe this move is to try and keep Wheeler?

Bowness let’s the vets run the room. Always has.

Always the same angle.

Wheeler is a top candidate around the league to be traded this summer. Bowness favours vets on the ice but nothing says he let's them run the room. He's openly criticized Benn and Seguin.

You wanted better defending? This is the coach to do it.

It's going to be boring hockey but at least this guy has a system. I was a Brodeur fan in the 90s so I watched a lot of boring hockey, I'll get used to it quick.

I respect your opinion on this and Hopefully it works out.

Just seems like a desperate move for some reason. I guess I need this to work and see some change to gain some well wanted and sorely missed optimism

Wonder if Derek Laxdal comes with Bowness. Coached together in Dallas and he’s from Stonewall, MB.

Edit: Also - Todd Nelson coached with Bowness in Dallas. And he was an assistant coach with the Chicago Wolves when Cheveldayoff was the team’s GM.

I'm cynical enough that I don't really believe that and wouldn't be surprised at all if Tocchet is letting the Jets save face by saying he was never offered a deal. I trust Kevin Weekes enough at this point that I'm skeptical of the media trying to walk back yesterday's news.

I’m good with this hire. He did more with a crap team than Maurice/Lowry did with a better roster here.

I can see this being a temporary move so Trotz has an opening with us next year and Rick becomes an assistant.

Old school will keep everyone accountable for their play and keep attitudes in check……

Chevy can get to trading the selfish players now and we will be better off

Friedman also said something about his sources telling him the Tocchet rumors weren’t true.

Honestly... who care's why someone didn't get hired.

All that matters is who got hired and where we go from here.

I said yesterday... coaching is an issue, but it isn't THE issue. The big issue is who is still in a Jets jersey come September. And if we have a cancer in the room and it's still festering come opening day... it doesn't matter who is coaching.

The pessimist says we settled on Bowness because we lost out on Trotz.

The optimist says that had Trotz decided to return to coaching, he wanted to come back home. In 2022-23 it can all come to reality. Trotz did thank the Winnipeg Jets organization and no one else. Let us hope he returns here. Rick Bowness will improve our defense which is in great need of work. He may help Morrissey become a top 2 dman, he may help Stanley become a top 4 dman, he may help Heinola and Samberg become top 4 dmen staples on our roster.

Yeah, I don't really care if the Jets feel the need to save face. Everything pointed to Tocchet being the guy yesterday and nobody went on the record to refute the news yesterday by Ken Wiebe or Kevin Weekes until Bowness had apparently already been confirmed.

I suspect Helle will be very happy with this hire, as will the entire defensive core. Not sure what Mark S will think of Rick being hired.

Yeah, Hellebuyck's been quoted in the past that he likes seeing a ton of shots. Playing defensive shell hockey with a ton of shots against and few for suits him.
Bowness will probably tighten the reigns on the forwards further than Maurice ever did. Maurice kind of just stuck to leashing the defensemen.

Ken Wiebe was the original source that thought Tocchet was the frontrunner but he didn't really put any weight behind it. Weekes later in the day basically said that the Jets had an offer on the table to a coach and then later added that Tocchet was the frontrunner.

"right now it's tough to sort of get a feel for maybe if there's a front runner or not, if I had to put the crystal ball I would have to say that rick tocchet is probably the number 1 choice for the winnipeg jets" "I still think the jets are defiantly still in deliberations, I don't think they have made their final decision, but right now I will probably say that rick tocchet is the probable front runner, again I'm not trying to couch it but that's the best I can do with the information I have right now"

wiebe was clearly just guessing that tocchet was the front runner, and friedman said last night he heard about the rumor that the jets had an offer on the table for tocchet and was told by a reliable source to be careful with that news

It's not their first choice for sure. They were all in on Trotz - maybe Montgomery was a candidate but not the candidate in waiting if Trotz said no.

I don't see it as desperate. I think they thought they needed a guy with some experience at the NHL head coaching position, who could wrangle the room if needed and could improve some bad defensive metrics.

Whether Bowness is the guy to do that is to be seen, but I don't think they just hired the first person to say yes. Head Coach Arneil would've been desperate. Bowness, less so.

Yeah, you're repeating what I've said. As I said, Wiebe wouldn't put any weight behind it but his best guess was that the frontrunner was Tocchet. Kevin Weekes then reported that the Jets had an offer on the table and he also said that Tocchet was probable.

My point is that Friedman's reliable source could literally be Rick Tocchet saying "Nope, the Jets didn't offer me a contract." and that's him letting the Jets save face because he turned them down.

At the end of the day I don't give a shit if the Jets feel like they need to save face.

or kevin weekes could have been wrong... which is far more likely then the jets trying to save face...

I don't think he holds back young players who are performing well. I think he's a bit reluctant to put them in if there's another veteran option.

Also this was Heiskanen's 4th year in the NHL. It's not like he's a rookie anymore.

yoinks, smells like a desperation hire. Its bargain bin time for the old boys coaching fraternity. Could be worse, could have hired Travis Green
