Please Understand
Great post & exactly my thoughts. This hiring says a lot about what has been going on behind the scenes. If it is a short term stop gap to course correct some issues, then it is a savvy hire. I am not over the moon about it, but I do understand the logic to it

That's the only thing that makes sense. I mean, Bowness was contemplating retiring after last season. Now he accepts a new coaching gig? This has to be a short-term stopover to rein in the personalities in the event that they can't get what they are looking for in trades this offseason.

f*** I miss feeling optimistic about the Jets. I want to be excited for them again. It's been beaten out of me the last three seasons, culminating in this disaster of a season. Then you get those exit interviews? I don't see any way they can run that back. They can't.

To be clear, I don't hate this hire because I hate Rick Bowness. I don't like his systems. I hate this hire because of what it signifies from the Jets front office. They aren't interested in something new that might be effective. They are going with experience and player management. They want a human resources officer.

This screams they think they can make the playoffs and aren't going to make much change.

I figured this was the route they'd go with a vet coach since they dont want to make major changes. I wouldn't want to throw a rookie coach in that room.

Better than a Tocchet hiring, but not something to be enthused about either. Jets will still be mediocre.

Wishing on lottery luck or a Trotz hire next year is a waste of time because something more attractive will come up for him but to each their own.

Rick B?

Wow ok I didn’t see that coming, but honestly I’m fairly pleased with that hire. Rick is a better coach then many give him credit for and much better then his record would show. Don’t get me wrong my first pick was still Barry T, but Rick B isn’t a bad second choice. Other teams hired worse coaches in the last couple weeks then Rick B. Overall is Barry T was a “A+“ grade hire, then I see Rick B as a “B” grade hire. Not bad, pleased it wasn’t some of those dark horses discussed.

Now I’m interested in hearing who fills out the rest of the coaching roster.

I will file this under could be worse... willing to give him a chance for sure

I'd like to do the same - and I would if there was substantial roster adjustments happening. But I think this hire means that is not happening.

Benn/Seguin/Klingberg/Radulov were good players that fell off a cliff last season. No one was scoring unless Hintz and Robertson were on the ice.

If these heat maps are anything to go by, they'll be spending a lot of time defending.

Benn and Seguin fell off the cliff earlier than that. in the '20 season each played 69 games. Seguin scored 50 pts, Benn scored 39. They made the finals anyway.

For Jets fans interested in digging deep into Bowness' problems, I wrote quite a bit on him and his philosophy back in November:

When it comes to offense he's a true lameduck coach. When reporters pressed him on improving offense, he ignored them, and would say things like "offense will take care of itself." He has our F3 on the forecheck actively tracing the counterrush instead of asserting more pressure. It really is some worsts parts of the Bible stuff when it comes to creating offense.

BUT...much as I despised his approach to offense, Dallas was a legitimately good defensive team under him. Ranked high in expected goals allowed under his tenure, and the Stars were 13th this season and 2nd last season in rebounds allowed.

Squeaking into the PO and making a quick exit does not maintain fan interest. It kills fan interest.

If you can't sustain a rebuild, you can't sustain a franchise. Bubble hell brings no contention and no hope. At least with a rebuild, there is hope.

How Bowness will do remains to be seen. I'm not thrilled with the hire, but we can at least be pretty sure he won't be around long.
What kind of team even thinks about a rebuild when it has an elite scorer in Connor, a player worth the price of admission in Ehlers, and some good young players coming up? It's not a team you scorch. Wheeler is getting old, past his prime, if he goes the Jets are smart to get something for him. Dubois is just like Trouba, you should get a positive return for him. A replacement and a prospect or two. Maybe even another 1st round pick to shore up the youthful talent on the team, in the window Connor and Ehlers are still signed.

Hellebuyck should get you a good haul. And the thing with starting goalies is there are only 32 of them in the NHL, so finding one isn't that difficult. It's conceivable that the Jets starting goaltending goes from elite to mediocre in that process, but that's exactly the season Hellebuyck had this season, and if there is an uncertainty at any position past 30 goalie is that one.

You can hate the team for being mediocre in a league where no free agent considers Winnipeg when there are other options, and the Jets have had Kane, Lemieux, Trouba, Laine, Roslovic, Nathan Smith, and now Dubois snub us. You can want something more. I'm happy we have a damn team, because I didn't go to watch guys like Jason Jaffray, or Mike Keane or Jimmy Roy, I went to watch the best prospects in the NHL before 2011.

I feel at his age, this is his final go at coaching. Jets probably wanted experience and stronger defensive minded systems coach to work with this core. He'll leave when the Jets decide to blow up the roster and rebuild.
