Was at the game and we were simply out-goalied. When Laine didn’t score in the second in front of the net, just had that feeling it wouldn’t be our night. Their goalie played well.

their goalie played well but they still scored 4 quite easily and imposed their will in the Jets end

Well the 2nd was on pp, and they moved it around nicely. They had zone time with possession no doubt and snapped it around, but Helle wasn’t his best for a couple against either.

Rangers had their moments no doubt, but Jets had chances too.

That 1st goal is all Niku. It was a 1 on 1. And he was on the wrong side of it. He was out of position a lot tonight.

Rangers PP picked us apart. Panarin is pretty impressive with his vision. Jets PP really suffers from Wheeler being stationary and at the wrong angle to attack the net. Ehlers would be better in that spot. But he is not the captain, and no captain wants to give up the leadership. Agree that creativity is lacking. I'd still like to see a 5 forward setup.

I fell asleep in the second but I noticed 5on5 the rangers were able to spread us out fairly easily. Looked like sponge hockey at times. They were passing in between huge seams we left open like a hockey drill

Man to man D just got burnt by the Rangers forwards, they knew what was coming and would fly around the offensive zone with forwards switching sides all over the place causing our players to get completely lost in the D zone.

We played a solid first 15 minutes then got absolutely worked, barely had any real offensive chances in the 2nd and 3rd. PP is looking stagnant with Wheeler no threat to shoot on the half wall, the puck dies on his stick right now. I want Ehlers to take his spot but if Wheeler isn't producing on the PP with his drop in 5v5 scoring his contract could get real scary.

I was at the game... the crowd was unusually quiet, especially after the first goal by Kreider. Looked like kind of a softy. The Rags goalie was pretty hot, he even captured a trickler with his elbow in the second on a decent rush... that would have changed the complexion of things, had it gone in.

My kid told me she had a great time, despite the outcome. She is a relentlessly happy person.

Bottom line, KC produces with his chances, Ehlers doesn’t! Ehlers had a better game than he has been having in the last 15 games, do agree Ehlers would be an improvement over PP time hog Wheeler who has become ineffective on the PP #1 and more of a liability.

Why is Ehlers immune from criticism, seems to be a pattern with Ehlers, great player up until the Christmas break and kinda disappears when the NHL tightens up after the break and in the PO’s. Can also say that he is consistently inconsistent.
He is not at all imune from criticism... One of the more criticized players over the years...

when it is warranted...fine by me, but it is not imo.

dissapeared since christmas?
Guess we have different definitions of what dissapearing is.

KC grabs his chances? Sure, he better with how he has been used.
Prime toi, prime pp, used in OT, hardly ever shuffled, prime linemates - The security of knowing, no matter how much you f*** up, the coach has your back, knowing you will never be doghoused.

had a looong stretch on the 2nd line with NO production, yet was promoted to line 1. Had a good few games with no production, demoted? Not a chance.

Ehlers is also grabing his chances, is producing fairly well considering his usage, is shuffled more than others, always gets f***ed over by the hc. Some games the kid is getting 13-14 mins and no pp, yet is still getting his pts, and his adv. Stats still look good.

All players are viable to critique, have just noticed certain posters always critique him, and never praise him.

That is not even a problem, to each their own.

But the abuse in the GDT, was imo way over the top, for a player who does well with the time he is given.

Bottom line, the abuse is bullshit. And KC being a coach favourite never seems to be into consideration when comparing the two.

Sadly, I didn't even finish watching the game. When it was 4-0 and the Jets defence/Hellebuyck were playing like dog vomit anyways, I turned to watch the end of the Westminster Dog show where this poodle monstrosity won. There was a beautiful Golden Retriever named Daniel that SHOULD have won, the crowd was going nuts for it. Seriously, was one of the nicest pups you will ever see.

Daniel:

Wheeler needs to recuse himself from PP1, or the coaches need to reorient the flow of play with him still on it. It's slow, predictable and easy to defend, pushes the keystone shot back to the point where we lack consistent accuracy and firepower and has been more less neutered going back to last season, when Laine shouldered much of the blame. It looked noticeably better with Ehlers on it, and yet once again we have Wheeler back in his spot like he pays the rent on it, and futility reigns.

Being the HC of an NHL team means making the tough calls, even with star players. It's time to mix things up, because we sure aren't beating the good teams, or even the not-so-good teams, on our 5v5 scoring exclusively.

EDIT: But I guess Wheeler's the fancy poodle in this scenario...

With the win, the Rangers leapfrog the Jets in overall league standings on a points per game basis. Thankfully, we are in the relatively weak Western Conference so we are still in the playoff hunt. Aided by the trades with the Jets last year, the Rangers are up considerably on points this year compared to last year's season.

The first goal was basically all Niku's responsibility. Kreider had the chance to make a play there as though he was on a clear breakaway.

That speaks to a larger issue this game in that it exposed the defensive issues the 6 defencemen still have. There's some forward help that could be better but the 6 guys back there are just as capable of being made to look silly on their own.

Beaulieu had a shift in the first - weak blind clear up the boards, intercepted. He somehow got the puck back moments later only to make the same mistake again.

On top of a not so great performance, it was clearly one of those nights where the puck luck wasn't there to me. Some of the passes that were right on the tape and would bounce off from guys that normally would bury pucks like that. Frustrating.
I wonder if Scheifele is having a year like Laine did last year. Something doesn't look right with him and I'm wondering if he is playing hurt like Patrik did last season. He looks lethargic and simply disinterested. The scary part is that is how he looked for a good portion of the back half last season as well.
I really wish I would have the chance to see what Barry Trotz could do with this group. That is probably the most unlikely thing that could happen, but his track record shows that he is the prototype on which current coaches should be built.

Panarin made him look foolish a couple of times. The bread man likes cutting to the middle of the ice, did it all night, and Niku turned the wrong way a couple of times giving Panarin plenty of time in the slot with the puck.

Simply overmatched by a great player on a couple of occasions. But that’s how he has to learn. Experience that. The concern is if he never adjusts in the future.
True - the Panarin interactions didn't concern me very much, he was doing that to many Jets last night - when you pass the way he does you can't be as aggressive with him.

The things that did concern me were the giveaways and the Kreider goal. Was super slow to react and then ended up on the wrong side of him.

Yeah, that was disappointing on Beau's part - since he has played fairly well since his return from injury. It's a shame - the guy has all the tools but he looks like he struggles with confidence which usually presents as standing around too much, hesitating and second guessing, leading to the wrong decision or telegraphing a pass.
