Goalies can't be captains, can they? I would agree that Schmidt will probably be one.
Goalies can’t be Captain “officially”. Luongo was a team captain. Rules prevented it in on-ice capacity, but he did wear a ‘C’ on his helmet as an unofficial capacity.

Same rules apply for Goalies wearing an “A” too, I believe.

This is where TNSE comes across as an odd organization.
How awkward is this going to be moving forward?
The room obviously doesn’t like his leadership.
Hey maybe they’ll let Blake reapply to be captain.
Wow
Its so classic Winnipeg/Cheveldayoff though. We’re gonna change captains, but we’re gonna only go 3/4 of the way and not actually move him out because we aren’t physically forced to.

I think they were trying to trade Wheeler and he was ok with it. I don't think they found something they liked. Plan B is to downgrade his leadership role and give it to the "new" generation. As the cap clears up and depending on how our season goes they might re visit trading him at the deadline if not I bet he goes next summer
Exactly. After patches was given away for absolutely nothing it was near impossible to get any value for wheeler.

By all accounts there was mutual interest from both sides in wheeler being moved. Apparently the cost to do so was too high. What would you have them do, move him cost be damned?

Not much to be said that hasn't already been said on today's news, except that Bowness is definitely not afraid to do what he believes is right and what the team needs.

This is very good news. I've always believed that we have a very good group of players, they just need to be held accountable and made to play to the best of their ability.

Very good news indeed.

King enabler Maurice is gone and now we’re looking at a (potential) new leadership core. Looks like we’ll finally get some changes to the rumoured locker room mess. Took a long while, but happy to see it.
It's funny because the coach says once again the dressing room is fine. Emphasizes it.

Jets have had 2 captains in their recent history, so I am glad the transition isn't immediate. I think it comes down Wheeler probably wanted a trade, and that wasn't possible so you start fresh. Wheeler might get humbled a bit this year. Whereas Maurice knew the guy was crucial to his success, Bowness has a different team. I hope Wheeler has more fun with less to carry on his shoulders. Less time with the media this year.

Yup. Pacioretty who is a better player, with less of a cap hit and for only 1 year as opposed went for free. We'd be paying a ton to get rid of Wheeler or retaining 50% and trade him for nothing and have dead cap.

Both options are worse than having Wheeler on the team, as long as Bowness isn't killing him with ice time.

Thank you Blake for your leadership and your compete level.

The 4 A's for this year going forward

Wheeler - both home/away - he's earned it
Schiefele
Morrissey
Lowry

Whoever gives up his A for half the games for Lowry (either Schief or Morrissey) should become the new captain

And remember, you don't have to wear a letter to be a leader

This is the right move. I said back in summer that Wheeler could stay on this year but needed to be stripped of his captaincy and many thought I was out to lunch. This change will be good for him, other players and the organization. He’s a big boy and a professional, he likely knows he needs a change a scenery also but is hard to move so if he stayed this would happen.
This is good on all fronts in my opinion and like I said in summer not a big deal at all.

I would suggest that removing Wheeler as Captain was the plan as soon as the exit meetings were concluded. I'm sure they tried to trade him but was basically impossible. They would have made it clear to any new coach hired that one of the first tasks before the year starts is to notify Blake he is no longer Captain if they couldn't trade him. This isn't just something Bowness thought of in the last couple weeks on his own.

True North is very loyal but I'm sure Chevy had enough of losing young players over the toxic culture in the locker room, and decided changes needed to made in that regard before this season started, period.

I also like they didn't spin this as Wheeler asking for this to happen, or that the decision was mutual to save face. It was clear the organization needs to move on from Wheeler as the leader, and it was their decision and not anyone else's

Jets are banking that a change in coaching staff will change the fortunes of the team on the ice, I have my doubts, the first month will be a window to the team having success this season. As for Wheeler I think he has one foot out the door and if the season goes pear shaped the other will join in.

I love this move too much. Wheeler took it for granted way too much. I think what needs to be established in Winnipeg is not taking things for granted although I understand things are handed to the players to keep them in the least desirable place to play in the NHL.

But, I have a gut feeling this may lead to a Blake Wheeler trade. But so far love Bowness, Maurice was a pushover and took things for granted as much as Wheeler did. It makes me scared if Tkachuk is going to bully him in Florida.

I say Lowry or Morrissey should be our next captain. Would say Scheifele but he needs to stop being a crybaby and not think he's the face of the franchise.

I am as well but Blake is human and this has got to sting.
Sounds like he didn’t have a lot of time to process.

Hopefully they'll do better than last season's first month when they were ... oh yeah ... 9-3-3.
