What if the Sabres were willing to part with Bowen Byram? What would the Jets throw in to sweeten the deal?

To be fair I don't think LHD would be of interest in general, the needs are 2C or top 4 RHD

Oh man does this ever bum me out. Super high on Rutger and thought it was a perfect fit for both and he would be a future captain. I hope to god we get a somewhat decent return.

Add in Heinola and to degrees Roslo, Kova and Chisholm. All guys who were limited in their chances in the NHL for what ever reasons. Some their own, some management.
As a rookie coming in, it should give them pause and make them question their direction within the team.
I agree that we shouldn’t cave to anyone demanding spots in the lineup, but for a draft and develop organization, we are pretty shitty at integrating them to the degrees as other do. Sometimes we run too tight of a leash and these news guys coming in are noticing.
I honestly feel like it's a blind spot due to the way they want to build the team.

They want the 3rd line to be Lowry checking line no matter what. Good defensive players/PK guys 4th line. Therefore only one line for young guys to be in a situation to succeed - 2nd line.

Works great if you are a building team. Not so great when you are trying to compete for a cup. At that point your 2nd line pretty much needs to be a solid 1st line. Or else you'll get creamed against the best teams (we did anyway haha).

A guy like Lambert is going to have the same issue if he comes here as a wing. Need to be good enough to play 15 mins a night and produce and be decent defensively. Or else you get demoted straight to 4th line and then inevitable press box when you don't produce there (because 3rd line is exclusively checking)

Jets could have just said f*** it we will start you on the first line. Then if he played like shit and isnt ready then demote him once he is under contract.

They are a bit sensitive about the culture in the room thing. There may be something to that, but these NCAA stars won't take not getting what they ask for lightly. You wouldn't recruit a UFA by saying "you have to earn your spot on the roster".

Because they are young and drafted the same way as CHL or Euros, we don't look at them as UFA's. But they are closer to UFA than they are regular draft picks.

If you want to pick NCAA studs that's great. They should be one and done or you risk this type of stuff.

Agreed. They are too hard and fast with this line setup which seems to be setup for disaster. It forces the T9 into too many minutes, limits youth integration and limits the B6 into single digit minutes every game.
We just keep repeating the same insanity year after year.

For heaven's sake, this is so annoying. I'm not a Jets fan...but this whole nonsense is another example of how Canadian teams are playing in a cap and parity league, with one hand tied behind their backs. It's ridiculous.

We're not even talking about a kid who was born into some paradise and just doesn't want to go to frozen nothing Winnipeg. The guy was born in friggen' Nebraska for goodness sakes. But he's part of that factory where the US runs these top level hockey players through a few very specific little funnels in Michigan, New England, or Minnesota from the time they're a dozen years old...and then they come out the other side with these baked in ideas about not playing in Canada, or forcing their way out as soon as possible.

There are still ways that the Jets can come out alright in this, if they make the right trade. Since they're clearly still in a "competitive window" anyway. It just ruffles my feathers real good when stuff like this comes up. Where it doesn't matter how much you do the right things at the draft, if you're a Canadian team...you've got a handicap when it comes to even keeping these guys.

Canada needs to open up a loophole and start indoctrinating their kids to refuse to play for American teams. Though even then...like half the WHL division of the Canadian Hockey League is in the US at this point. So that probably ain't happening. :scared:
Imagine writing a post this long without reading what is happening. McGroarty wants to play in the NHL, NO MATTER WHERE, it's not about being in Winnipeg or Canada.

That's a totally bogus excuse floated to cover his intentions and you know it as well as i do. But in any case, it's all just part of the same process. It's a player dictating their timeline and destination to a team, rather than the other way around, and letting their play do the talking. And we've seen it over and over again previously. This is what this "feeder system" promotes. It takes CBA negotiated "team control" out of the hands of the team that drafted them and creates a distortion in a cap and parity environment.

He'll force his way to a team that he wants to play for. Whether that's about Winnipeg or Canada specifically in this case, who cares? It's the broader principle of what he's doing, that we've seen time and again. And it almost always ends up being a preference for one a handful of specific US regions/teams that are centered around the USNTDP funnel programs. Which further handcuffs the drafting team in dealing the player to a preferred destination.

The Twilight Zone
With the attitude that he deserved ice time (according to what i understand) before he has proven himself? I don't know its worth the price.

Is that it though? I mean, if you're asking someone to leave a program where they're perfectly happy to stay and play, they have every right to weigh the two options. A full ride at uni playing hockey isn't a bad deal at all, you seen what tuitions are these days? At some schools it has more monetary value than an AHL salary. And while it's not just for pure fun, it's also not a job.

So maybe it's not about what he believes he deserves, it's about whether or not it's worth it to him to give up what he has if it's only going to be for a 5 figure salary in the minors.

Put it this way, if you were asked to leave college by a major corporation for a big salary you probably take it. But would you do it if they said they wanted to start you out in the mail room at minimum wage for a year instead, even with promises of more later?

If he has a huge season to the point where his team is so hot to sign him that they'll burn an ELC year next spring, he's lost absolutely nothing while enjoying an extra year in college.

Sorry but this makes no sense....

Have the Jets said they aren't inivting him to Training Camp with a chance to make the team or something? He obviously can't be expected to be guaranteed a spot (duh).

Sounds like he wants out of WPG
Read the articles, the Jets didn't give him a spot, last year and so he's expecting to not get one next year so is threating to want out so he can play in the NHL 100%. Its not a WPG or Canada thing he just wants to play in the NHL and some doubt if the Jets will give him a spot on the roster just like last year

Jets have always been super slow bring in rookies, always have been even back to Mark S rookie days, Mark was annoyed at first also

Why would the Jets just "give him a spot" if he won't even sign a contract with them? And what does not giving him a spot last year without a contract have to do with whether they'd give him a spot (if he earns it) next year and is willing to sign a contract with them?

It's a completely superficial cover for wanting to play for a different organization.

It's a way to say he wants to force his way out, to a preferred destination...without actually saying it. He doesn't want to say the quiet part out loud, lest he end up like Cutter Gauthier for example.

*So he wants to play for the Jets in some hypothetical scenario where he's just handed a roster spot (and perhaps even in the top6) with no risk of not making the team or going to the minors.

In other words he doesn't want to play for them. No team is just guaranteeing that to him. Whether it's moreso the destination (city/country) or organization (i.e his view of WPG overmarinating prospects, whatever) is irrelevant.

Clearly wants out of there

Before Harris signed there were rumours he wanted to play for Boston. Trying to tie the Habs hands.

So the Habs signed him, granted his wish to play straight into the NHL and now, a few years later he's trade fodder.

Their entire young life they are told how great and special they are, then they hit the reality of playing against man who don't care what their mommy or pappy said.

I see the same happening here where he thinks he's so good that he fits straight into the NHL. Maybe a few angry scrimmages where he lands on his face and/or enjoys a few two handers across his back by guys 30-40 heavier then him can straighten him out....or not.

Players have been guaranteed a spot before, this is not something new. Perhaps WPG should FINALLY realize you can't treat every prospect the same?

6 months ago his dad was wearing a jets hat through out the entire world jrs, clearly it has everything to do with the city of winnipeg and nothing to do with the reason that was stated... thank you random posters who have zero clue but wanted to give their 2 cents, you surely have an idea of what you are talking about

I don't see it as bogus at all. He is looking at what happened to other prospects before him.

Ducks have lost a prospect to NCAA "yea I'll sign for sure", then didn't bullshit. That guy even signed in Edmonton of all places. Surely Anaheim is a nicer place than Edmonton, no? They're trying to max their earnings.

I don't think it's even necessarily a unique problem to the USNTDP and Collegiate feeder programs. Plenty of kids hopping out of the CHL are the same, with plenty of entitlement. Guys come over from the Euro leagues all the time, expecting to just jump straight in. And that swagger or confidence isn't even necessarily a bad thing. Most of the best players have some element of that and do make the jump directly from lower levels to NHL, bypassing the AHL for the most part, or altogether.

The difference that makes it a unique problem for this specific subset of players, is that they actually have the leverage for force a team's hand. And that's inherently a distortion or wrinkle in what is supposed to be a balanced, parity system. Which is specifically built to prevent a bunch of Ontario kids from just playing for say...the Leafs, or Quebecois from playing for Les Habitants. Or where Vancouver has become an absolute hotbed for producing premiere NHL talent...but reaped basically none of the rewards of it.

What are they doing wrong here? Why would anyone be guaranteed a spot? Even Macklin could show poorly enough to not play next year, unlikely but possible.

Earn your spot. It’s not a tough concept. How could his teammates respect him if he doesn’t?

I agree, but high picked NCAA players can make demands due to this "loophole".

I don't agree at all they have that right, but they do, so teams should be aware of it when picking a player.

I think this batch of US players isn’t doing the next batch any favors. Teams may actually start avoiding them when possible, affecting draft position which has an impact on finances too. The kid doesn’t have as much leverage as you might think. This happening now suggests the kid wants out now, he’s trying to maximize the amount he makes by starting as early as he can. If the team doesn’t sign him and won’t trade him because they aren’t getting value he has to sit and waste two years he clearly thinks he doesn’t need in the NCAA’s. Sure he gets freedom down the road but he loses these two years of would be pay.

Hopefully Treliving is in on this player, he has shown tremendous potential outside the NHL, I am intrigued to see what he gets.
