Am I crazy, or do a lot of the write ups make everyone sound like an all star?
No clicks without hype.

We’re past the point where we can expect journalism for journalism’s sake.

Since he is an Isles prospect, I don’t mind it at all. We all need some extra enthusiasm about our prospect pool.

If you think about it, Pulkkinen was the 54th player selected in a draft of ALL the hockey players in his birth year in the world. So yeah, anybody in that kind of select company is probably pretty good. Whether he takes the next step to the NHL is the "crapshoot" element of the equation.

I was speaking generally.

Any word on his injury status? Got injured a little over a month ago.
Was wondering the same thing. Yet to play for JyP.

It's looking like he's going to be out for a while.

His Finnish team has advertised that he's back in the fold for the season but hasn't reported on when he'll be ready to play.

He did a chat-style interview with a few sports podcast guys that you can find on Spotify but there's no transcript of it.

I was worried that he had an ankle injury similar to what Wilde had a few years back, but it seems to be something else in light of the fact that he was skating with the team in August/September.

Pulkkinen played his first game of the season yesterday, after an injury. He was the 7th dman with 9+ minutes of ice time and wasn't involved in any goals for or against.

His team plays again today and Pulkkinen has been moved to the 3rd pairing. I'll follow him more closely and see if there's anything worth of reporting.

Thank you! This is great news. Was worried his injury would Be a long term thing. Thankfully and hopefully he continues to build back up and has a good year of development

Pulkkinen's team just finished their back to back game on the road with a 2-1 shootout win. Jesse played 19:09 and had a nice wrister goal from the top of the slot in the 2nd period. He got a nice pass to a wide open slot, there was traffic in front of the net and Jesse buried an accurate one-timer to the right-side top shelf to tie the game.

His skating can look still a little rough after the injury from time to time, but overall he played a really solid game with only a couple of bigger mistakes in the d zone during regular time, and one in overtime. Some of his shifts were a little bit too long but that was a problem for the whole team, and he managed to keep defending OK in these situations.

Pulkkinen continues to play with high confidence and calmness when he has the puck, which was already shown during last season. Physically, he can outplay most of the opposition and in my opinion, his puck protection and defensive reach are in the top category on this level of play. He defends aggressively with his stick out (utilizing his reach) in most situations.

In the offensive zone, he held the puck a bit too long for my taste on a couple of shifts, but good things followed from those plays (including his goal), so I can't criticize too much.

If he continues to play like this, he will be a clear leader in his team's already below average defensive core, as there were already some injuries before tonight, and one defenseman might've gotten injured during this game.

EDIT: Not sure if one can view this outside of Finland, but here's a video of his goal (#6 white jersey):

Really appreciate your sharing this with us!

Since my last report, after Jesse's first game back due to an injury, there's really not many (positive) things to tell about. His ice time has decreased significantly and there were even some whispers, that his performance in on-ice training has been poor as well. In one game, he was benched because of a risky play on the neutral zone, after just 3:37 TOI (and 3 shots somehow :DD). He's made some other poor plays with the puck too, especially in the d-zone (breakouts), resulting in a few high-danger chances for the opponent.

His play off the puck is still decent, especially near the boards, and he has delivered some nice counter hits when he's had the puck. In the o-zone, he has shown some flashes of skill with the puck near the goal line, behind the net and near the corners. I can't recall any great offensive plays on the blue line though, at least after the first game.

TLDR: He has looked like a different player offensively after his first game of the season, and not in a positive way.

This definitely checks out with some of the stories about him really being unsure about a professional hockey career until his draft year. Hopefully he can dial back in and finish season strong

Based on his size and pedigree (starting late), he is a long-term prospect. He might take a step back at times - hopefully he works out in the end.

He also started the season injured, that can be tough for players to get throw right into the prime of the season.

Nothing of real interest to report about Jesse's situation. He's been in and out of the lineup since November, partly due to his performance and he was also sick recently. His team JYP changed the assistant coach responsible of playing and developing the defensemen in the middle of December, and the new coach (Islanders legend Tomi Pettinen :DD) told in a recent interview that Jesse needs to start taking things a bit more seriously to get his pro career going.

Eric Cairns from the Islanders organization is currently or was recently here in Jyväskylä to follow and talk about Jesse's development.

FYI, the player drafted right behind Pulkkinen was Teddy Stiga . . .
That name brings back some great memories!
