They didn't even interview the kid that was easily within the vicinity of the 4th pick?

If I'm GM with a top 10 pick, I'm interviewing every 10 ranked player and even a couple outside the top 10 and getting notes on all of them. That's an inexcusable mistake by the Chiarelli regime.

That seems like pretty faulty logic. The Finnish thing seems overblown. People don't make anything of it if a Canadian GM passes on a Canadian player, and when an American GM passes on an American player. Why is this different?

Just because he's Finnish, does that mean that he needs to be partial to Finnish players? Of the 50 available contract spots for CBJ, 4 of them are taken by Finnish players. That doesn't seem significant at all.

Also, CBJ was in dire need of a center. They reached for the best center prospect available, Dubois. Montreal did this with Kotkaniemi. (Could hardly call it a reach, he was in my top 5)

JP may well have been a good pick if his development was handled properly.

I guess one thing that is true though, is Kekalainen is one of the few GM's in the NHL that could get an actual personal personality read while talking to Pulju. Pretty much everyone else is trying to sort through the very broken english or with someone translating. Nielsen on 1260 claimed that someone close with Kekalainen said that Kekalainen came away from his Pulju interview feeling that the kid was a goofball and immature/unprofessional. That would likely be resulting from a conversation between them in Pulju's native language.

This is really neither here nor there. I dont care if the player has the personality of a potato, speaks Swahili, and his favourite tv show is teletubbies. What matters is can he perform and do the job on the ice. In Jessie’s case that would be a resounding no, or at least, not yet at the nhl level. And he doesn’t appear to be willing to do what is required to make that happen and it would appear he isn’t willing to try with the Oilers.

That isn’t McClellan’s fault, or Chiarelli’s fault, or anyone else’s fault. He is dumber than a bag of rocks.

Being dumber than a bag of rocks never held Ryan Smyth back. Of course Smyth was never accused of not being professional.

I'd say the latter is probably a bigger detriment to a career than the former.

With this "new info" being leaked by the media I am preparing myself for the Oilers dumping Jesse before camp for a completely underwhelming return.

Sewering a guy on his way out of town is the Oilers MO, and they are turning the fans on the player so the fans won't be upset with the crap return in trade.

Any teams not do that? I dont think there has to be a weird motive like that anyway. JPs drama led people to ask why, and of course it wouldn't be pretty

Definitely a good lesson to learn that picking consensus BPA is not necessarily the best move if you do not have proper scouting analysis from your team scouts. Also enhances the importance of the combine interviews. Puljujarvi has all the talent and physical tools and yet what lies between his ears has made those attributes pointless.

Soooo...better to have a good player with a professional mentality or a
Great talent with potential but with entitled attitude?

I hope we will not make this mistake again and having Holland as GM...I have to admit...I might have a little more confidence that we won't.
Our next few drafts are going to be interesting.

Finland is not North America. Distance and the lack of personnel there coupled with a language barrier plus them seeing this kid from youth hockey onward is an advantage they have.

When Kekalainen himself said they passed on PJ because of character and maturity issues when nobody else did, they obviously utilized an advantage.

I heard an interview with Kekalainen himself. They were not impressed with him at all in the interview.

Holland is on record as saying character is important. Handling the jump from the CHL or college or Europe to the AHL then NHL is a big one and you have to be able to handle adversity. Something JP can’t seem to fathom.

Holland will trade him and the return will be better than expected:thumbu:
I think the return will be better than expected, although the HFB Oilers is doing it's best to bring the value down by insulting the player. Luckily for the Oilers, the GM's of other teams know how immature and bitter fans can act, and Holland will be able to get a decent return.

HF posters are bringing his value down. Man. This is one of the stupidest things I’ve read on this forum. Yep, GMs are reading HF oil to find a players true value. Wait, no, they probably have their scouts scouring the fan forums for them.
Your a gem bud, keep posting.

If you are aiming for NHL stardom from a fairly early age and you struggle with learning English and you don't address that when you're 16 years old, what are we supposed to believe about you?

Especially in Finland and the Scandanavian countries where learning 3 different languages is par for the course.

Really get the idea Jesse was stronger and faster than his peers growing up and didn't experience any challenges entering his draft year and he expected to blow away the NHL when he came in and all of a sudden shit got real and he copped out hard.

Might be a cool dude but someone please explain why he's not Boyyyd Devereauxx at this point.

I'm not saying you are doing a lot. Just a little whining on the internet. :thumbu:

Lucky for the Oilers not a single GM of other teams give a rats ass about what is said on forums nor give a single shit about fans opinions anywhere.

Not as stupid as claiming PJ is on par with Gretzky because they both won WJC at 17 or claiming it’s McDavids fault PJ is a whiny sniveling brat.
