I'm not trying to defend him, I think they're idiots and the whole situation has soured whatever little faith I had left in Puljujarvi. I'm just saying they're not completely naive and think this will have the most positive result (for them $$$) in a losing situation (I don't see him being an NHL player, especially top 6).

You know top 6 is an even play line reference.
Top3
Top 6
Top 9
Top 12
With 31 teams 62 C, LW, RW are top 6
Puljujarvi at age 19 #50 RW 10 evg.

That would make you wrong!

He already has been top 6 Fwd at getting what wins games Goals.
Getting #9 winger EVTOI the next year was oilers telling him to go away.

Do you even watch the games and watch him play?

He didn't get anymore time with McDavid because of a few scary bumps out there (not being where he's supposed to be on the ice). With McDavid moving that fast out there, he needs to know that you're going to be where you're supposed to be (if you're going to be on his line). There's not enough space out there to be roaming out of position like on European ice.
Excellent summary by Van Diest here around the 1:50 mark:

The sad thing is Drake Caggiula of all people seemed to click better with McDavid than JP

I am getting the distinct impression that you have not watched Jesse play at all. If you had then you would be able to clearly see how out of position he is most of the time.

Very disappointing to hear that Jesse was unwilling to work with the coaching staff and Manny V.

It’s also odd to hear now that he actually wanted to go down to the AHL and work on his offensive game and confidence for an extended period of time last season, but then was promptly called up after only two games, only to be told they wanted him to be a checker and he didn’t get a sniff of the top 6 after that even though the season was over. Guessing that is when he made up his mind that he no longer wanted to be an Oiler?

Sounds like Manny V was brought in to babysit him....which basically aligns with what Stauffer said weeks ago about one of the assistants literally trying to walk him through everything.

I'm guessing maybe he checked out after season 2? After season 2, that's when word came out that both Connor and Leon had a tough time playing with him so maybe his feelings got hurt.

While they could've given him more opps [sorta], guy literally is so green in many facets of his game. Might work on international ice but not in the NHL so its understandable why they had to break his game down and start with small steps. Too bad his ego got the best of him and now he doesn't want to put in the hard work to be an NHLr

So basically there have been 3 coaches that have given Jesse special attention and all 3 have failed. Talk about a red flag.

If I am a GM that is considering trading for Jesse I would make it a priority to speak with Todd McLellan for an extended period of time before hand.
Jesses value couldnt possibly be lower....the Oilers clearly wont be getting much at all for him.

The sad thing is the kid has the tools. Your right about getting a soft return. Maybe a team in a desperate cap dump takes him on as the season draws near, there will be enough of them who are going to be right at or exceeding the cap once all the RFAs and depth players are signed by the end of training camp. I don't expect him to sign here, and don't expect Holland to like what he is offered.

Happy trails Jesse....happy trails.

I think thats the best we can hope for at this time.

What a massive mistake taking Jesse 4th overall. Not as big as the mistake the team made with Yakupov but when you compound one bad choice with other bad choices it really impacts the team moving forward.

This team needs to improve their interview process...it clearly isnt good enough.

I think he doesn’t want to put in the work with an organization that he feels has failed him for three years. But it is very possible, if not likely, that he fails just as hard with a new team if he gets traded.

Agreed, it's an underrated part of drafting your first rounder, as we've seen twice now. But, I think they have already. The Broberg pick is a good example of that IMO. Puljujarvi should have been drafted in the 2nd or 3rd round like @nexttothemoon has mentioned.

I wonder if the Oil even interviewed him at all. By all accounts, Oilers hardly scouted the guy anyway and were dead set on Sergachev till CBJ picked PLD.

Still dont get how Chia didn't know how to pronounce his name both at the draft and years later.

Keep in mind that LA wanted him after TMac had already signed on as their head coach

It was an amazing gift to Puljujarvi that he had all that coaching time devoted to nothing else other than his personal and professional success. On another team he'd quickly sink in the depth chart, first in the NHL and then the AHL, and then land in Europe again about 10 times faster than here.

But honestly I still like JP and I'm backing away from calling him a bust. Maybe his path is to spend a season in Europe. If he fails again upon his return (wherever he plays), then he's a bust. I don't think you can call him that yet.

-New head coach Ken Hitchcock was so confident that he had the answer he reversed a decision to have Puljujarvi spend the rest of the season in Bakersfield. Much to the consternation and confusion of the Puljujarvi camp, the Oilers recalled him yet again. Hitchcock is the very personification of stubborn when it comes to insisting that players play for him a certain way, especially without the puck. But as it turned out Hitch (the 2nd winningest coach in NHL history) didn’t have the keys to the car, either. The winger’s TOI over his last 10 games topped 10 minutes only 3 times. 3 other times it fell into the single digits. Yes, the bad hip also contributed to that.
Hitchcock is an older, fatter version of Eakins.

Ok. That is quite bad news.
This stupporn was new to me.
Even more problems....

If he cant take advice.... Well who would trade anything of value at this point.
Seems Oilers lose all the way with Puljujärvi.

I feel like it'll be similar to when Yak was traded.

He will start with some energy and look good for a bit. Then will continue his ways, his offense and game will go back to normal, will fall out of favor with the coaches and linemates.

The fact that Todd, Manny and Ken all gave him special attention and then gave up on him cause he just wouldn't listen is one of the biggest red flags about a player you can have.

Guys who fail in the NHL, go to Europe and come back don't often just get better. It can happen but it often doesn't.

Even NHL scouting had him at #3. It wasn't really just the oilers. SOmetimes players don't work out. The top #2 and #3 spots are nearly 100% NHL players of a pretty high calibre, #4 is still kinda high odds as well, but there is still the dice roll that they don't work out.

If I'm reading this right

Analyzing the value of NHL draft picks - Sportsnet.ca

#4 is by no means a guarantee.

To be honest, with a #4 pick, I'm not sure who's really at fault. He's a winger, that's the easiest transition to the NHL even. Everyone had him as being NHL ready. So did the Oilers actually ruin him? would any other team have done things differently? especially with a player that everyone is deeming NHL ready? He did have from my recollection, some good training camps as well. He actually looked like he was going to be a great winger. Then the regular season came around and he disappeared.

It's easy to blame the oilers for mismanagement, but there's also times you really have to take a good hard look at the player.

If that article was correct and that is what the Oilers did for him, how the heck can you blame the club? they did almost everything possible to coddle him up to the NHL level of play. Heck, if that article is correct, i'm actually freaking impressed with how much the Oilers spent in time and effort and attention to detail to try and get him going.
