I do like the idea of a GM reading HF Boards and just being like "WTF, the fans hate this kid...I'm not trading for him!"

“I’m thinking of trading for JP, let me just log on to HF Oil...”

It's a great mystery why Edmonton is on every no-trade list. Weather is nice, and people seem to be lovely.

Does nobody else find the entitlement really offputting? What exactly has he done to warrant a full time NHL spot? He can't even crack the oilers.

We get it, you are Finnish and all Finnish players are the best hockey players. If only Connor McDavid didn't suck so much Puljujarvi would be a 200 point player
And your education system seems to be top notch. Enviable reading comprehension and debate skills.

Must be the taxes then I suppose.

Pretty tough to have a rational discussion with anyone who believes because 1+1=3 when JP was 19 makes him a fantastic hockey player at 21 and the WJC he won at 17 puts him on par with Gretzky.

Now it’s our entire cities fault along with our education system.

Enviable debate skills indeed.

I think the return will be better than expected, although the HFB Oilers is doing it's best to bring the value down by insulting the player. Luckily for the Oilers, the GM's of other teams know how immature and bitter fans can act, and Holland will be able to get a decent return.

LOL.

Cause GMs base their decision making off a random forum....?

Reading all sorts of crazy shit off this thread alone. LOL

I guess one thing that is true though, is Kekalainen is one of the few GM's in the NHL that could get an actual personal personality read while talking to Pulju. Pretty much everyone else is trying to sort through the very broken english or with someone translating. Nielsen on 1260 claimed that someone close with Kekalainen said that Kekalainen came away from his Pulju interview feeling that the kid was a goofball and immature/unprofessional. That would likely be resulting from a conversation between them in Pulju's native language.

I knew he was trouble from the way he scarfed that pizza down. :shakehead

I wonder if the Oil even interviewed him at all. By all accounts, Oilers hardly scouted the guy anyway and were dead set on Sergachev till CBJ picked PLD.

Still dont get how Chia didn't know how to pronounce his name both at the draft and years later.

Would a team actually draft a player without interviewing him though. I mean this team did some dumb things but I cant imagine them picking a player 4th overall and not even interviewing him.
I suppose its possible but man that would be brutal judgment if true.

Chia totally screwing up the pronunciation was really odd though. Its like he read the name off of a piece of paper which was just handed to him minutes before he took the podium.

Keep in mind that LA wanted him after TMac had already signed on as their head coach

They can have him....I dont think that any Oilers fan would mind.

Even NHL scouting had him at #3. It wasn't really just the oilers. SOmetimes players don't work out. The top #2 and #3 spots are nearly 100% NHL players of a pretty high calibre, #4 is still kinda high odds as well, but there is still the dice roll that they don't work out.

If I'm reading this right

Analyzing the value of NHL draft picks - Sportsnet.ca

#4 is by no means a guarantee.

To be honest, with a #4 pick, I'm not sure who's really at fault. He's a winger, that's the easiest transition to the NHL even. Everyone had him as being NHL ready. So did the Oilers actually ruin him? would any other team have done things differently? especially with a player that everyone is deeming NHL ready? He did have from my recollection, some good training camps as well. He actually looked like he was going to be a great winger. Then the regular season came around and he disappeared.

It's easy to blame the oilers for mismanagement, but there's also times you really have to take a good hard look at the player.

If that article was correct and that is what the Oilers did for him, how the heck can you blame the club? they did almost everything possible to coddle him up to the NHL level of play. Heck, if that article is correct, i'm actually freaking impressed with how much the Oilers spent in time and effort and attention to detail to try and get him going.

I hear what you are saying and the best you can do is minimize the risk...so you do your due diligence.
I think (if done correctly) the interview process can uncover issues that would never be evident from scouting the player. There was clearly a reason why Columbus and their Finnish GM passed on Jesse. I heard that they interviewed the player. Same goes for Yakupov. I heard an interview with Brian Burke when he said that after interviewing Yakupov he referred to him as an arrogant little prick and said they would have never drafted him even if he did fall to them in the draft.
The Oilers just cant afford to continue to blow 1st round picks anymore. They have to do everything possible to minimize the risk of making a bad pick.

I heard an interview with Kekalainen himself. They were not impressed with him at all in the interview.

He had the advantage of even interviewing Jesse in Finnish as well. Nothing gets lost in translation then.

If English is a problem (which IMO is a tell) then the teams should have an interpreter present so that they are clear that everything they ask is fully understood by the player.
