I hope to see Puljujarvi in the Ovi/Laine spot on the 2nd unit. He has a pretty nasty 1-timer, it’s where he played on the PP earlier in his career and if he pots a few maybe he could be moved up the 1st unit next season. Having that big 100+ mph right handed bomb would be quite the PP weapon that McDrai could utilize

I agree give Hyman the net front this season. They just signed him to a big contract, plays that hard nosed willing to take the punishment style game and he’s really good in tight.
I could see him taking Nuges spot on the PP at some point but not while the PP is good and effective. I think as Nuge wears down Pulju can take that role but for now second unit should be fine

I respect the hell out of Jesse for seeing a weakness like getting shell shocked in scrums and taking boxing lessons to try and overcome that. I respect anyone for doing that in life actually. That’s true character, not that CHaracter but character.

He went from this:

I just want to see this guy starch someone so badly lmao. Just me imagining Pulju starching Matthew Tkachuk I’m like…

I like that idea. Nuge shouldn't be out for the full time McD and Leon are out there. You can play those 2 for pretty much the entire time and have Nuge and Hyman (assuming he's the net front) sub out for Pulju (net front) and Bouch in that Ovi slot with Keith as the guy replacing Barrie for 45 seconds to finish off the pp.

This is an idiotic take. The lack of players capable of carrying their weight in the top 6 is precisely the reason why the team has had problems separating McDrai. 93-97-13 worked well last year, but left Draisaitl with a bunch of scrubs.

Top 6 winger was a clear need for this club and has a trickle down effect on the entire line up. I also have no idea what that guy is talking about, a "guy that can create his own offense"? Those guys cost 11 million in the FA market.

And there is the fallacy of analytics fundamentalists right there.

I actually like Jfresh more than most analytics folks, but this is why a strict analytics approach is stupid. Can McDavid put up points alone? Yes. Can they win a championship with that formula? Not even close, he gets keyed on and shut down because there are zero other threats on the ice which doesn't show up in WAR charts. That doesn't even get into having to put Leon on the top line with him which nukes any semblance of depth we might have.

What Jfresh doesn't understand is getting Hyman gives the Oilers flexibility to have depth that can score away from McDavid. Also not really sure what magic player out there that can score on his own without Leon/McDavid, but wouldn't be playing alongside one of them in the top 6. It makes no sense.

Exactly. There are takeaways from analytics that can be used to improve your team, but staring at these numbers in a vacuum doesn't always translate exactly to ice. You have to have someone smart enough to understand these numbers and apply it practically.

Agree with "not right now".

I think Nuge is sneaky good (but mostly SAFE) on the far half-wall.

We went from DEAD LAST on the power play in 2017-18 to FIRST from 2019 - 2021 cumulative and the major difference was switching from a "finish the one timer" role for the far side player (then Letestu) to "be the secondary QB" (RNH).

That has opened up so much space for McD and it would only have happened if we had a guy who can make that first easy pass to relieve pressure when we've had a broken play or missed shot that ends up on the far side. RNH has been key in allowing us to keep controlled possession and therefore keep the #1 unit on the ice longer. That in turn leads to breakdowns in the PK, an ability to recycle the puck to the strong side and convert on the PP at an exceptional rate.

Islands in the stream.
JFresh is just trying to create controversy to get views. Oilers fans should ignore him. His predictions for the playoffs last year did worse than the average hockey fan.

He's a charlatan.
Aren't most bloggers?

Dynamically, think about it. Anybody that makes the effort to become a blogger is in effect saying that their views are somehow more important than everybody else and that they should have an internet blogging pulpit from which to preach. Thats essentially it and why I give almost all of them no time. Its self absorbed opinion. Its conceit.

I far rather prefer being just on a board, in effect the commons, or speakers corner, and just discussing hockey on par with everybody else.

But do you have fancy charts?

Really just shows how out of touch JFresh is.

Hyman and Pulju are not the same player, and Hyman is able to play anywhere in the top 9 as well.

“Expensive version” meanwhile there’s a good chance that Pulju earns a similar contract if he is even better this year than he was last.

By comparing them I think it means they have a similar WAR %.

Not even joking unfortunately.

Sorry guys, if this has been posted before. Then you can just ignore. Pretty good subs with Jesse with Finnish. Nothing really new, but ...still Jesse. Well at least for me it was something new, popped up in my feed somehow.

The sooner JFresh goes away, the better it will be for the rest of us. Nothing against you, PulYou. I've got a couple of his tweets bookmarked to laugh at and mock in a few months when he's wildly inaccurate again.

He couldn't give an opinion without consulting his majorly flawed model first. The same goes with dom and the EvolvingWild twins.

What is this goof trying to say?

The team's biggest problem was the other two players on McDavid's line not scoring, yet he's confused why they signed a winger to score goals on a line with McDavid?

Jfresh is not very smart often for some pretty basic stuff. I think this is just because he tries commenting on all teams, when clearly he doesn't have the time to follow every team close enough to have a valid opinion on them. Every Oilers fan will tell you that a McDavid winger is a problem now, and has been for a long time (when that role isn't being played by Drai of course). Not only does Hyman hopefully fix that problem, it allows Tippett to play RNH with Drai, which hopefully gives us a legit 1/2 punch for the entire season. If 29/97 continue to play 1/3rd of the ES time each, then that means we should have a dominant line on the ice for 66% of the ES time. This isn't a hard concept to understand, lol
