I agree with you also, the penalties were bad but not to the extent to be scratched, i hope it's just a temporary thing to install discipline or something.
The minor penalties was a joke. He's only had 2 penalties all season. One vs Calgary and the other vs Montreal. It was more a mockery of Sullivan's punishment system. Which is highly illogical since Hayes, Acciari, and Beauvillier can play like garbage and not get healthy scratched whole Puljujarvi can play well and seemingly get scratched twice.

Nothing makes sense in Mike Sullivan's world of accountability.

“He had a great start to our season,” Sullivan said. “The conversation I had with Jesse was about just redefining expectations and how we think he needs to play to help the Penguins win games. The biggest thing is just attention to detail and playing on the defensive side of the puck, playing away from the puck. He was doing some real good things offensively. He was doing a pretty good job of getting in on the forecheck.

“I just felt like the details of the defensive aspect of the game or his play without the puck was not where it needed to be or was slipping. That was the conversation that him and I had in just trying to define what the expectations are for him to have success with the Penguins.”

Since there are no proven metrics for defense, at least not the same way there are for offense, it’s easy to scratch a guy for “defensive” reasons. The entire team sucks at playing D because the coach is an idiot.

Actually that was good to hear. Let's hope Jesse is smart enough to do what Sullivan is asking from him defensively. We all know he has the work ethics for it.

I think it's just an issue with Jesse wanting to play more offensive hockey(which should come naturally to him) and, Sullivan wanting him to fulfill a more defensive role in the team.
Just an inkling, should be taken with a grain of salt.

Puustinen playing some hard minutes instead of Pulju is odd.
The way he's using Puustinen doesn't make sense at all and if you're going to f*** up Puusty's usage at least use Jesse there where his size would help, doesn't make sense to play either like that.

Imagine Puustinen being net front presence because the other twats are scared to be there and he routinely goes there, I'd healthy scratch Hayes and dress Puljujarvi and Puustinen in the line up. At least they bust their ass.

Nah you're not that far off. Sullivan wants him to play more like a plug and create offense like that. His bar is Acciari. If you aren't a zero talented American dipshit of a player doing dirty shit up and down the ice while being a marginal NHLer, he has zero interest.

Yeah if any player gets scratched by Sullivan the 99% likely answer as to why they're getting scratched is that they aren't defending the way he wants them to.

Sullivan doesn't give a shit about offense. Malkin will put up like six points in a game and Sullivan will talk about how Geno is defending harder and that's why he's putting up points this season.

Sullivan would love it if he could turn the Pens into the Hurricanes and just play a suffocating grinding forechecking style of hockey. What Sullivan fails to realize is that style is only possible when you have the youth/skating legs to pull it off. Once upon a time the Pens had that and had success with Sullivan's style, but they haven't had the ability to play that way for years.

In one of the powerplays, I had to laugh seeing all the bigger players allergic to the front of the net and there's Puustinen, causing havoc and being a net front presence for that shift and then finally Bunting comes in the last few seconds like oh shit I should be there too. Then in another Bunting finally parks his ass there and Puustinen is high slot and of course, they play hot potato.

As long as Sid scores, he doesn't care if anyone does anything as he'll limit their minutes in the middle of the 2nd and then in the 3rd he's basically using 2 lines to death and a rotating winger.

Predictable as shit. It works against teams where the coaching is worse than his but all playoff caliber teams dunk on his ass lol. And then he just blames it on Puljujarvi for literally doing nothing wrong.

It's fine to expect more of Jesse. When you see him play sometimes it is easy to understand. Both when shows something really good and sometimes when he makes many mistakes.

But benching him did not work in Edmonton, won't work now. Either accept him as he is or coach him better

I think the assist was quite nice, I hope Sullivan noticed it too.

Jesse's /60 production is still 2nd (ES points/60) and 3rd (points/60) best of the team and just a couple of players have a better +- so at least he's keeping his trade value decent as it may well be heading towards that.

Anyway, I was glad to read the comments that said Puljujarvi had a solid game. The reason I'm especially pleased is because I was worried Sullivan's treatment would make him play hesitant and scared as shit. I guess it's bad memories from the Oilers in that regard.

There was a time when McLellan punished him for the smallest things and dropped him to the 3rd line (in McLellan's words "to put fire to the bottom6") when he had been doing extremely well in the first months of that season. Later there was a time when he didn't play well enough to deserve more, but I and the Oilers fans believed that treatment played a part in him not turning to a player that was expected. I'm happy if he can now just pick some things Sullivan is hoping from him and not let that affect his playing style too much.
