Seems like he's playing pretty well this season, maybe carried by Necas's breakout? I don't see any reason for the Canes to trade him, would create a huge hole and that contract is pretty much market value for a middle 6 center.
Yes, largely this. He is playing well. He plays a straightforward North/South game. He has all the attributes Montreal fans said he had when we got him, but he skates better and is more consistent, and a much better defensive player. Because Necas is so dynamic, his goal (and Eric Robinson's) is to make the simple plays and let Necas carry the puck right now. He's getting many of his points just dishing the puck to Necas, though that doesn't make Kotkaniemi a bad player in his own right.

He's one I'd want to hang onto until the end of the contract. He doesn't provide surplus value beyond the $4.82M, but he's a hard player to play against and a big body. I could see him putting up 40-50 points for much of his prime, maybe occasionally hitting 60 if all goes right or if he sees much powerplay time. Right now he's getting all 8 points at even strength.

And in the worst-case scenario, Carolina has another 1.75 years to determine if they want to buy him out at the 1/3 level, since Kotkaniemi doesn't turn 26 until July of 2026.

There really isn't a reason to attach an asset to unload Kotkaniemi. If someone values him and wants to make a hockey trade, I'm sure Tulsky would consider that. But there is enough demand around the league for centers that I don't see Carolina adding a premium asset to Kotkaniemi, especially when they could buy him out for an $840K (actually lower for 2 or 3 of those years, more like $460K) a year cap hit either in summer 2025 or 2026.

What is the value of Jesperi Kotkaniemi? Still relatively young has looked like he’s gotten some chances in the games I’ve viewed him but only getting 14 minutes a night and 11 last night. He’s on a long term deal at almost 5 mil a year. Is he strictly a cap dump?? Does he have value and would the Canes move him?
He is cap dump.

His buy out 1/3 goes till june 2026

So someone aquiting him is as also acquiring the buy out.

I think realistically he could fetch a 2nd or 3rd round pick right now. But I don't think the Canes have any interest in trading him, at least not yet. If a clear big upgrade at 2C comes available I could see him getting moved either as a part of that deal with other pieces or in another deal just to free up cap for that player but the team is perfectly happy with him as things stand right now.

Generally speaking, KK’s been solid for Carolina. He’s not broken out like they hoped when they made the offer sheet, but he’s not fallen completely off the cliff like so many opposing fans seem to think about him. Even when he’s not putting up points, he’s a smart defensive player and much more physical than you’d expect from just looking at him. And when he is putting up points (like he has thus far this year), he’s a good player on a good deal.

Nobody is going to touch him after Carolina gave him that silly contract. He's not worth anywhere close to that number, and there are multiple years left.

The Canes are stuck with him.

Kotkaniemi sucks. I was mind blown that the so called “revenge” is to sign our bust first round pick who looked to be a 3rd liner at best (a worse version of Lars Eller). Habs robbed the Canes by extracting some value.
Still laugh at how everyone was raving at the time that the Habs got robbed lol

Just keep him , maybe he figures out the consistency issues

He's a 30-40 point NHL center who's not terrible defensively , I guess 50% of the leagues NHLers suck too right? They should only ice 6 forwards and 3 dmen on every team since everybody else in the league sucks!

You are describing a 2.5 - 3 mil/year guy. Plus he is locked in for this year and 5 more at 4.8.

He should only get better over the next few years in the trenches below the dots, but out in open ice his effectiveness plummets. I’ve always said there is no way Brind’Amour would have him on a roster if he was a GM and I stand by that.
