The Devils aren't even close to competing just yet. Trading Bratt for picks+prospects is better than getting a player in their prime right now when we aren't ready.
What?

I mean , maybe they’re not ready this season but this is a team designed and built to try and be competitive in the next 2-3 years. We don’t need more 18 years olds.

NJ wants to at least try to play well. They can move Graves, Severson, Tatar, Wood, Haula, and maybe Blackwood if they want picks and prospects. Presumably Bratt is still around when they are ready to compete.
I think they will have to. Just no room for Graves/Severson with our recent top picks ready to break in. Bratt just seems to not want to be here, and don't really want that on the team.

This team is trying to rush things by giving horrible contracts out right now. Palat got a 5 year deal!!!

If Bratt wanted out wouldn’t he have just told NJ that? Agree on thr Palat deal but it’s one bad deal until Hamilton gets old

Palat is in no way a bad deal unless he produces less than his career rate on Jacks wing, which is highly unlikely given hes a wizard with the puck just as Kucherov is.

Sports contracts no longer are valued to the last year, moving deals in any sport with one or two years left is very easy and commonly done nowadays with owners having an exorbitant amount more in expendable funds to try and gain draft capital

Sure.

SAying that trading Bratt for futures helps the team more than a similarly aged 1st line winger is nonsense. The Devils are ready to take the leap. If they get league average goaltending, they will make the playoffs.

Can Devils fans fill us in on what the needs are?

My team can't really be involved for cap reasons, but I wonder if something like Jack Quinn or Ryan Pulock for Bratt might be a starting point. Buffalo and NYI seem like two teams that would be near the front of the line to add a dynamic 2 way winger.
Our long-term core probably looks something like this, with potential pieces in ( ):

LW: Palat, Sharangovich (Gritsyuk) (Wood)
C: Hischier, Hughes
RW: Bratt, Mercer, Holtz (Zetterlund)

LD: Siegenthaler, Hughes, (Mukhamadullin) (Bahl) (Okhotiuk)
RD: Hamilton, Marino, Nemec

G: Vanecek (Blackwood) (Daws) (Schmid)

We have other prospects who could maybe make the show as bottom-line and bottom-pairing players, but those are easy spots to fill.

The Devils probably have most of a long-term roster in these pieces. Clear areas of need are center depth (I am really intrigued by the idea of seeing if we can sign O'Reilly as a UFA), goaltender (could Blackwood and Vanecek be the solution? We will see...) and probably another winger. But really, our biggest need is for Holtz, Nemec, and L. Hughes to be as advertised.

If we trade Bratt, I think what we really need is a top 6 winger, age 24-25, good playmaking with a deceptively good shot, recently pacing at or just below a PPG, RFA at the end of the season, good chemistry with Nico, maybe Jack sometimes. Also bonus if they were picked really late in the draft so we can undervalue him a bit.

If we can find someone like that, I would trade this Bratt guy easy.

Bratt is 24 years old, are we calling that prime? There's players entering the league at 23. Unless Bratt comes out and says "I'm gone", there's no reason to them to trade him for futures which makes them even further away from competing. I'm a NYR fan and I can see that's bad asset management.

patience

the devils have one of the youngest roster in the nhl. they farm system is in great shape except for center (not a huge need with hughes, hischier signed long term) and goaltender.

i don't think the devils (neither the management nor the fan base) are looking to move bratt right now. with the exception of one hfb poster. if they fail to make progress for an lt extension next summer, there might be a need to look into the trade option.

I feel like this thread is being taken way out of context, it was created over 2 months ago when Bratt was going to arbitration, and then bumped for...... reasons?

I'm honestly a bit surprised by all this Bratt stuff. I don't recall him ever insinuating anything other than wanting to be a devil. The guy is oozing with confidence and wanted to bet on himself this upcoming season so he can prove last yr wasn't a fluke. I can respect that, and I don't think it has anything to do with wanting to leave.

In fairness, most players say the same thing “I love it here. I want to stay and be part of the core that brings this team a Stanley Cup.” However, that’s not really always the reality. So I do think a little hesitation/nervousness is not unreasonable, especially with now two not-entirely painless RFA negotiations.

I do think Bratt is being genuine when he says he wants to stay long term. As long as the Devils are willing to pay up, I see no reason he doesn’t stay. But what is he asking for?

I think a big reason for Bratt not getting his payday this past offseason is the Devils didn't have the cap room for it.

Meh, they were willing to dish out for Gaudreau. They would have found a way if Bratt/his agent and Devils management were on the same page. Plus, they could have done it before FA when they still had a lot of space if they really wanted to.

It’s likely a mix of Bratt asking for a lot, the Devils wanting Bratt to prove it a little more, and both sides playing hardball.

Management has made an effort to get core players locked up to seemingly good contracts before they breakout. Unfortunately they were too late to do so with Bratt, how he plays this year will be a huge factor.

They were willing to dish out for Gaudreau OR Palat and sign Bratt to a short-term extension. Bratt to a long-term extension would have meant neither Gaudreau nor Palat.

It seems to reason that if they were able to, they would have prioritized signing a 24 year old Bratt first and then look to FA and see where they were and if moves needed to be made to clear way for signings or maybe change their targets. It’s silly to think they could have signed Bratt long term but thought, nah, let’s wait, almost go to arbitration, and then we’ll worry about it next year.

Uhhh. I like Bratt, I think he's very underrated but this is a whole different level

I love Bratt too, but you need to lay off the whiskey.

I understand you'd prefer to overpay to lock him up long-term vs getting him cheap in the short-term just to have him walk, but there's not a chance he demands anything close to 10M lol.

Sooo, he’s had one year where he got close to being a PPG player (only 26 goals). You look foolish already trying to place him amongst some of the best stars in the league.

Hey, it’s your salary cap to squander if you want to toss $10M AAV based on that lol.

Holy overpayment 😬

Lmao wut????
Maybe I wasn't as crazy as you guys thought?

We should have offered 8x7+ and then kept adding until he said yes. What a mistake.
