Proposal: Jeremy Swayman for Casey Mittlestadt, Isak Rosen and a 2nd.

you need to factor in the "The Buffalo Sabres" factor here. That is, Swayman's .921 sv pct looks great, but he's playing for the best team in NHL history. Playing behind The Buffalo Sabres, that .921 is going to be more like a .905, at best. And, while that would be a great improvement over the current Sabres goalies, it's not worth giving up a prospect and a relatively high pick to acquire.

If you don't believe me, just consult the "Linus Ullmark Save Percentage Conversion Chart." 2019-20 Buffalo Sabres .915 *furious typing, clanging and whirring noises* 2022-23 Boston Bruins .937.

There's also an argument that no goalie, regardless of perceived talent, is worth giving up assets to acquire in a trade because goaltender performance is so variable that you have no idea what you're getting.

Very lazy logic. Why acquire good goalies at all? Their save percentages will all drop down to .905 with the Sabres, right?

On the contrary; two factors are invariable.

1. Bruins develop great goalies
2. Buffalo don't

You are going to have to pay over the odds for one that hasn't been ruined by the Sabres coaches.
Hasek? Miller? Linus Ullmark?

You do know that Ullmark had a 917 for the Bruins in 21-22 right? You do know that he has made mechanical changes with the Bruins goalie coach this offseason, right?
You know the bruins will have 20-25 more pts and about 50-60 goals less allowed this year? Your historically great team this year is oodles better than 4th in the division last year. That’s not all Ullmark and swayman …it’s less likely then and more likely they are the benefactors

Rosen is absolutely dropping in terms of value since being drafted and I don't see how that can be argued. He had a whopping 2G and 2A last year and left Sweden entirely this year after playing poorly.

A 24 year old whos only just now hitting 55pts for his first time doesn't hold much value. Thats just a meh 2nd/3rd liner.

A 2nd is a 2nd

How exactly is that worth more than a 9th overall pick?
Why comment when you just look at eliteprospects and don’t actually know anything about the player or his situation? He didn’t get any play time.

No it’s logic that goalies and stats are very dependent on the quality and style of team in front of them. That’s why xGAA or x SV above expected percentages are a much better ( but still not perfect) marker on who is good or not

Because the Bruins match 4.2 in a heartbeat

And if Bergeron and/or Krejci return on similar deals that frees up space by kicking the bonus overages out another year and fills 2 open spots
Isn’t there a 4-4.5M overage from this year coming to the Bruins cap next year ?

So what. Literally true for every goalie.
So what is that’s why goalies don’t hold super high trade value - the performance is intricately tied to the team in front of them, so much less valuable than a play driving forward or d that creates value and expected goals/wins on their own. They are all somewhat dependent players therefore their value is less - outside of 2 or 3 truly elite guys ( that aren’t available for trade)

Swayman has the same save % as last year. The defending is actually worse than last years team, way more risk/reward behavior, just way better scoring and Linus has been great. It’s funny when folks who don’t follow the team try to explain what is going on. Is this what being mansplained feels like?

Swayman = Raycroft. Any team that trades for him and gives up a lot is going to regret it.

Kid carried a bad Maine team for 3yrs and has posted top 10 numbers since breaking into the NHL. You look at his numbers vs Rask (the guy Raycroft was traded for, but I'm sure you know that) through age 24 and they are very similar

Just curious why Rosen is only worth a 2? That’s 22/23 year old busted top 10 picks get? He’s worth less than a 22 yo Alex nylander? I very much so disagree… His trade value is an equivalent developing player, Midfirst value, which is exactly what he is, that might be a D we value more.

Also, again, what goalie has gotten more than Middlestat Rosen and a second in the last 10 years??? No one … which returns to the point why do we want to give up that much for a guy playing 30 games a year?

No one is denying he is good but why spend our top resources on that when we can get a very good older goalie to bridge for 2 years and use those assets to get the top 4 D we need to complete the D?

Very few top 10 goalies like him are available with, I believe three years of team control. Cory Schneider is your equivalent and garnered a 9th overall. Ryan Miller's haul was pretty good. Most of the time teams are not trading a #1 with lots of team control. And sorry Ullmark may be #1 but Swayman is a number one on almost every other team in the league.

Those trades were a long time ago. And they both look like awful trades in retrospect for the teams getting those goalies. The only goalie to return a 1st in recent history was Fleury and that was a conditional pick.

Darcy Kuemper returned a 1st round pick when he was traded to Colorado last season.
