I didn’t catch the Dallas game but he’s been mostly good. Not as poor defensively as I expected and has been as productive as you can reasonably expect given how the team is playing to date.
His play IS living living up to his reputation, so it’s a true evaluationThis is a prime example of HFers evaluating players entirely based on their reputation without watching a single second of actual hockey.

I mean, what's a better foundation for an argument, his 1000+ games elsewhere or his blip on the radar in Edmonton?58.73 CF%, 55.64 FF%, 58.73 xGF%, and one of the best Oilers by the eye test. By no metric has he been below average defensively. He's also been excellent on the forecheck and winning battles, even has over a hit-per-game so far.
Easier to just blindly echo what's been said about him in past years though.
OP is asking how well he’s playing this year in Edmonton…I mean, what's a better foundation for an argument, his 1000+ games elsewhere or his blip on the radar in Edmonton?
Career minus 100+ and never on a winning club. Already a minus 1, and again his club isn’t winning. It’s not difficult to connect the dots on this guy.58.73 CF%, 55.64 FF%, 58.73 xGF%, and one of the best Oilers by the eye test. By no metric has he been below average defensively. It's amusing watch Oilers fans blow their load on this guy.

If players don't put up points with McDavid it's because they're terrible hockey players. If players do put up points with McDavid it's because they're "leeching".Not even close to accurate, have you watched Skinner? If you have, brother, I question your judgment.
Dude’s shot is mid, he gets a ton of goals from the dirty areas. He’s far from a sniper, not even close, but he leads the league in backhand goals. Doesn’t go to dirty areas, but scores backhanders, huh.
He was just pissed off that he'll be the reason if the Oilers don't make the playoffs this year. Hard to believe this guy has never played a playoff game.I watched the game and forgot he was even on Edmonton. Saw him throw a temper tantrum at the end of the game lol
I can't comment on how he's been so far, but I'm sure once he adjusts he'll start putting up points
He’s done well offensively but the eye test shows the exact same flaws he had in Buffalo. McDavid and Draisaitl had a pretty shitty start to the season by their standards though, so the bar for him to look good was set pretty lowFunny thread
First few responses: this guy sucks, I didn’t even know he was playing
-
Next few responses: he’s been our best player
**(This with a team that has McDavid and Draisaitl)
For a discussion on his play in Edmonton?I mean, what's a better foundation for an argument, his 1000+ games elsewhere or his blip on the radar in Edmonton?
Ahhh demoted to the third line currently pumping a solid 43.1% CF only 6 games in.
Who’s telling the truth?58.73 CF%, 55.64 FF%, 58.73 xGF%, and one of the best Oilers by the eye test. By no metric has he been below average defensively.
People made similar-to-same arguments for Jay Bouwmeester only for him to retire as a member of the Triple Gold club. It's like you can connect the dots any way you want to fit the narrative.Career minus 100+ and never on a winning club. Already a minus 1, and again his club isn’t winning. No they didn’t. Bouwmeister was a stay at home defensive minded, match up D. He has no comparable to Skinner.People made similar-to-same arguments for Jay Bouwmeester only for him to retire as a member of the Triple Gold club. Doesn't look like you know what you are talking about. No they didn’t. Bouwmeister was a stay at home defensive minded, match up D. He has no comparable to Skinner.
Good try and hopeful thinking to connect a defensively sound D man with a soft, perimeter, winger. Skinner is not a defensive minded player. The Oilers were foolish to sign this guy instead of Holloway or Broberg.Doesn't look like you know what you are talking about.
When Bouwmeester signed his 6,7 mil contract with the Flames in 2009 not only was he a #1 defenseman who just had a 15-goal season, he was one of the most expensive ones in the league. He then held a record for the games played without a playoff appearance. Then moved to the Blues and signed a more modest contract which is exactly what Skinner has done as well.
A player who was "career minus 100+ and never on a winning club" can be very good on a different team, in a slightly different role, and at a lower price.
Broberg was gone regardless.i would be worried about what he looks like in February and beyond especially when it cost you valuable cap space for Broberg
Some more completely BS arguments. Phil Kessel, a soft perimeter winger, has 3 Stanley Cups. Jonathan Marchessault, a soft tiny perimeter winger, was a playoff MVP. You are acting like a team only needs one and only kind of players to win the cup when it's not even close to the truth. Especially when we are talking about less than 4% of the cap.Good try and hopeful thinking to connect a defensively sound D man with a soft, perimeter, winger. Skinner is not a defensive minded player.
