Confirmed with Link: Jeff Petry (50% retained) traded to DET for Gustav Lindström and conditional 4th-round pick in 2025 (later of Detroit or Boston's pick)

There was no error. That is garbage. The oriiginal trade would have been a 4 team trade except for time constraints. There was never any intention to keep Petry and every intention to move him to Deroit. He didn't want to return anyway. And likely no expectation of getting much for him.
I don't understand why people thought we were going to ice petry...

The return for Petry is a bit underwelming. But let's wait until the Camp and see if Lidstrom can at least move Wideman away from this line up. At worst, he goes on waivers and get claimed, or end up in Laval. He would then join three of his countrymen, Andersson, Heineman and Norlinder.

I still think Habs gonna keep 8 d-men to start the season

Matheson-Guhle-Xhelaj and Harris on left side
Savard-Barron-Kovacevic-Lidstrom on the right.

Knowing Habs lack of luck in the last few seasons, a couple of them will be injured during camp.

24 months ago the Habs had a disgruntled Jeff Petry @ 6.25M for what was then another 4 years.

Hughes turned that into

Mike Matheson, Gustav Lindstrom at a cost of 2.3M for another 2 years.

The context was never going to allow for Hughes to hit a homerun by moving Petry, but he hit pretty good job considering.

Its underwhelming when you consider he shouldve been traded right after the stanley cup run (or before... if you dont have the benefit of hindsight and incredible trust in luck and the chaos of CovidHL.

With that said, who cares Hughes got assets and he got rid of Petry and Hoffmans contract, people need to go outside.

You forgot about also dumping Hoffman without retaining any salary.

I will make a bold prediction and say that Beaudin will make the team as the 8th D. Lindström is so awful he won't even manage to win a spot on this Habs roster. Getting claimed? Likely not.

And thats fine.. maybe Lidstrom plays the same style we are finally entrenching in our ranks. And just maybe, he makes a great AHL player on the Farm for ithers to learn from.

A team requires amazing depth to win a SC. The differences between the following should be miniscule, because injuries are inevitable.
NHL 3rd line forwards = AHL 1st line
NHL 4th line forwards = AHL 2nd line
NHL Bottom 2 D = AHL Top 2 D

And Hugo is building toward that. When the time is right, we will get a big UFA F and trade for another Top Elite D/F (using draft capital and developped assets). We will be heading to a deep playoff in a few years. I see us as the next carolina Hurricanes from 2025-2035 is going to be so mych fun to be a fan!. .. thats something to look frwd to.

True although Hughes inherited that player/contract

The amount of fans ignoring this string of trades started with Mike "negative value" Offman and Rhem "world traveller" Pitlick is mesmerizing. I mean it would have been great to have something for Petry but KH decided to be human and trade him quickly to a team he wanted to play with and i'm fine with that. We got a 2nd, 4th and Lidstrom for negative value scraps and some retention and while that's not incredible that's also not bad at all. Those moves have the Comrade Dyatlov seal of approval.

Listening to the sick podcast now. Grant McCagg is actually high on Lindstrom. Thinks he skates well and makes a very good first pass. First positive review, for what it's worth.

Underwhelming return was my first impression on the second Petry trade. I can’t fault Hughes though as it was painfully obvious Petry wasn’t going to come back here, and he shipped him to Detroit where he wanted to be - in return for a 4th and a young prospect who’s never really panned out…

Two big things about this move I do like:

1) Hughes shows that he’s a good guy and enhances his position with players around the league. He’s dealt Petry twice now, and has been a class act both times, sending him to a contender and then to his hometown team. That’s currency for all other players, and potential UFAs.

2) Still elated Mike Hoffman is gone. If taking half of Petry’s deal is part of it, so be it, screw you Hoffman.

Those are 2 very good things, plus the 2nd, the 4th, and maybe this prospect is a good depth dman someday.

I suggest that your invective is better aimed at the fool who signed Hoffman to that outrageous contract rather than the player who benefited from that foolishness. Hoffman was the player he was before he came here. To have expected more is one of the reasons why Hughes is now the General Manager.

You had recently been talking about how valuable of an asset Petry is, especially at a cap hit of under 2.4M. And I agree with that assessment.

Given the best offer on the table for Petry was the Yzerman offer, it shows many GMs across the league are just as inept as the GM who signed Hoffman.
