Confirmed with Link: Jeff Petry (50% retained) traded to DET for Gustav Lindström and conditional 4th-round pick in 2025 (later of Detroit or Boston's pick)

Pretty much around what I expected. It's like the 3rd season in a row or more of flat cap growth and moving a contract is very difficult. Then add the 15 team NTC list.

If Petry had value, the Pens would have shipped him somewhere else before the Karlsson trade people. Think about it.

Habs did well:
* Hoffman/Pitlick = $5.6M of salary cap (one season left)
* Added a 2nd, 4th, and a 24 year old RHD at $950k
* Petry retention of $2.34M for two seasons.... We have the cap flexibility to do this. And no, we are not going to be big time UFA spenders in the summer of 24. Too early to move all in.
* One of the goalies will be traded.

We are tracking to be under the cap with Price not on LTIR. This was something I talked about all summer long. I seen it from a mile away. Placing Price on LTIR after the season is a big deal with accruing cap space during the season.

Next question... Is Dvorak eligible to be on LTIR before the season? Or do they prefer to have both Dvorak and Price part of the salary cap before the season. I'm thinking their plan is the latter.

I'm $403k short of the salary cap after DeSmith is moved (in the example below, DeSmith was moved for a 5th rounder to the Devils). But it might not be just DeSmith being moved. Might be both DeSmith and Lindstrom for a pick. Difficult to know what the goalie trade will look like but it's going to happen.

They could decide to start Barron in the AHL again. Barron starting in the AHL and DeSmith moved for a 4th-7th range pick. That gets us to a 23 man roster and under the cap with both Dvorak and Price not on LTIR.

Yeah at most you can get 1 million or so by player waived to the AHL if I'm not mistaken.

Even if you waive 2 players (ex: Armia, Allen), you get only 2 millions in cap relief.

Will need to move at least 1.7 million out and then waive 2 players with over 1 million in salary I think to get to the -.3.77 remaining before the start of the season...

Then you get the 10.5 millions of Price on LTIR and Hughes is in the business of getting bad contracts with a year left.
Welcome to capitalism my socialist friends! Out f***ing standing front office! Finally, a front office that realizes what the NHL has become!

I tried to tell you that you had Petry with too much trade value. If he had the value you think he had (even at 50% retention), the Pens would have been able to trade him in a separate trade before the Karlsson trade. I'm sure they tried bud.

Flat cap growth combined with the 15 team NTC. It was pretty obvious and I really don't think their plan was to have Petry start with the Habs.

Matheson deal was what a year ago? that doesn't enter into the picture now if you're assessing it wisely.
That's why I said this deal in a vaccum was underwhelming but if you assess what Kent Hughes has done just with Petry, it's been pretty good. This deal was basically Kent Hughes thanking Petry for playing ball. The assets we wanted/didn't want was done in the three way trade. Sometimes it's good to not give out the image that your organization is a cold inhumane factory and treats your players like numbers. That's why I don't really care about the Petry deal. Because KH already got what he wanted

So the Sergachev for Drouin trade was actually ok, becausse if we just lump it together with the Danault trade and the original Weise trade, we were quite ahead?
That's ridiculous and you should be ashamed of posting such stupidity. I examined what Kent Hughes was able to do with just one player and you bring up unrelated trades. He obviously was acting in good faith to Petry and his family

It should have been. Pëtry's cap hit was fine, but it is a bad time of year to move guys oike that.

You have to believe that Dubas tried to move him before the Karlsson trade and he couldn't. Not even with the retention they gave us when we took Petry.

Habs lowering his salary to 50% ($2.34M) did not increase his value that much. It only made it possible to move without paying a price to do it. Remember Petry is age 35-37 in the last 2 years of that contract. For as much as he still skates well, it just didn't add up in value.

This context was starring us in the face:
* Flat cap growth for 3 seasons now. Not many even had the space to fit Petry in at 50%.
* Petry's 15 team NTC
* Petry is 35-37 in the next two seasons.

Not outraged. Just a human error, bit of hubris. Paid the price and hopefully learned a lesson. No promises to players you can't be sure you can keep without penalizing the club.

Do we know for sure that the promise came after Petry was acquired? What if the promise was made beforehand in order to convince Petry to waive his NMC to facilitate the deal? In that case it would have to be honoured and I would assume (hope) Hughes had good reason to believe that Petry could be flipped with retention...which he was.

This is the saddest highlight video I've ever seen.

I get the feeling that Lindstrom/DeSmith will be part of a trade package that helps us get to 23 man roster with Price not on LTIR.

When I look at the D pairings, I have difficulty. Hughes comment of shaking things up a bit might mean it's a deeper trade and maybe Allen is traded instead of DeSmith but I think the plan is to flip DeSmith and Lindstrom now.

If you ask me who I rather trade between Kova and Lindstrom, I'd say Lindstrom. He's light in weight for his height and I don't think he provides the physical element in the D zone like Kova can.

What trade value does DeSmith/Lindstrom have? Enough to unload them, not take a salary back, and get a 3rd+?

Not overly impressed by the deal, would've hoped Hughes could get more with the full 50% retention...

But, on the whole that asset management approach remains very positive & KH continues to show great consistency of approach. Gets value and factors in the human/relational aspect with every decision. These are great pillars for long term success. Players talk. Petry was well liked/respected in the room. Doing him solid vs playing hard ball to try to squeeze out a slightly better return (while risking negative room with impact) is a refreshing approach.

If Lindstrom earns a regular top 6 role at camp, great... That's a bonus.

What are we doing with the Cap space we save this year by dumping Hoffman for Petry at 50%? If nothing, WTF did we clear Hoffman’s contract by taking on a $2.3M Cap hit next year?

With Cap space the most valuable asset in the league, Hughes turned a winning trade into a loss with this move.
He bought pick with his cap space and ditched bad contract. Cleared cap space in the short term as to not have price on summer LTIR and cleared the logjam at forward.

Its not a win or a loss. Its administrative shuffling. Its good work tho. Something we were not used to with Bergevin.

Hughes also said that with our prospect depth and drafts picks depth, he can be agressive (overpay) for a young player that fits our window. Cap should rise a lot next year and it was probably our last opportunity to weaponise our cap space like that. 2.3M in 2024-2025 is a spine but its also not that big of a deal.

It did not free up cap space next year, and we don't need cap space this year.
I am not a capologist, but others who know more than me about the subject (Montreal Canadiens Trade Jeff Petry to Detroit Red Wings to Clear Salary Cap Space) have noted:
  • The Canadiens have traded Jeff Petry to the Red Wings, clearing salary cap space
  • The trade allows the Canadiens to keep Carey Price's $10.5 million cap charge on the roster
  • The move is part of the Canadiens' long-term plan to create financial flexibility
I'll defer to them, but thanks for prompting me to dig further and learning a little more.

If Petry wasn't willing to play in Montreal then he would have had Montreal on his NTC. 'Petry didn't want to be here so the return is lowered' sounds like hogwash to me.

I'd have played him if that's the best we could get.

He clearly forgot to update his list or thought Montreal wouldn't be stupid enough to trade back for him so used that slot on another team lol

There was no error. That is garbage. The oriiginal trade would have been a 4 team trade except for time constraints. There was never any intention to keep Petry and every intention to move him to Deroit. He didn't want to return anyway. And likely no expectation of getting much for him.
