Really liked those comments from Gorton.
Brooks, I think, used the word "fresh" in a question, and he really glommed on to it throughout the interview – they want a fresh face, a fresh approach, etc. Very much gave the impression that they want someone forward looking, who won't necessarily be here with a focus on next year, but to develop and guide the kids as they come up, molding a new core for years to come. Gave the impression he was definitely open to guys who haven't yet coached in the NHL. Mentioned the AHL specifically as a place where they'll look – and while he didn't name Europe or the NCAA, did say something about being open to folks from pretty much anywhere as long as they've got relevant coaching experience (i.e. no former players breaking right in as HC), so I think both are still options.
On the franchise in general, it was primarily about building for the future – but in the context of playing with pride, and putting forth the level of effort and compete worthy of the privilege of playing in NYC.
As for Ruff, I very much got the sense it's all about professional courtesy. My guess is we get a "the organization and Lindy have decided to part ways, we're embarking on a longer-term project and he wants to be somewhere where he can pursue a Cup immediately" type statement in the next day or so.
