I hope they buy out M. Staal - it`s a NMC for a reason and it`s probably not that easy to remove part of their contracts to honor it.
I honestly do not know if Gorton is willing to live with the painful dead cap hit for the next 5 years.

Staal and Girardi are $11.2 million in worse than dead cap space right now. Buying them out lessens the damage if we can't find miracle trades for them.

You can't buyout both of them. Staal's buyout is brutal.

Gorton is not going to take on a $6m dead cap hit. I just cannot see that.

They are $11.2 million in dead cap space right now and they're hurting the team with their play on top of that. As silverfish has noted, we can't move on from the wonder twins without making some sort of ugly move. Whether we buy them both out or we sacrifice a 1st rounder, something like that is going to have to be done.

Personally, I would buy them both out and veer heavily toward young guys on ELCs, rather than sacrifice our fifth straight 1st round pick. I can understand if you prefer the latter, but losing another 1st is more painful than lost cap space imo. We can buy them both out, sign one of the Smith/Shattenkirk, and roll with a greatly improved defense.

McDonagh-Shattenkirk
Skjei-Bereglazov (KHL out clause means he's on the team)
With two of the Pionk/Graves/Clendo/Holden/Paliotta group making up the third pairing

That's a huge upgrade on what we had this season with the potential to be very good. I'm really, really excited about Pionk.

It's only that much in years 3 and 4. You offset that with ELC's.
It is still pretty steep in other years as well. And I believe that Gorton will not go that route. Maybe I am wrong.

ECLs? Have you seen the farm system lately?

Wait. What does sacrificing a 1st round pick have to do with anything?

What ECLs? What young guys? Who has AV allowed to play instead? This farm system right now is virtually non existent and I doubt AV is going the route of a completely unproven player to play a major role.

Signing both will run between $11-$13m. Tack on the dead space hit and you have tied up the cap. Again.
I am all for it. Just not sure how that is possible.

Staal and Girardi need to be removed from the roster. Our options are buying them both out or using our 1st to get someone to take one while we buy out the other. Those are the only realistic ways to get rid of them, unless Gorton finds a really stupid trade partner.

They're clearly shifting directions on the blueline. They did not go to the trouble of landing Bereglazov and giving him a KHL out clause so the wonder twins can block him. Ditto for Pionk. Guys like Graves are knocking on the door too. I literally sketched out what this defense would look like in my last post.

McDonagh-Shattenkirk (or Smith)
Skjei-Bereglazov
Construct third pairing from Holden/Clendo/Pionk/Graves/Paliotta group

I said sign one of them, not both.

Bereglazov, Graves and Pionk immediately come to mind.
I get it, but there is absolutely no indication that those three can take regular shifts in the NHL. One cannot simply bank on that and proceed to construct a roster that way. Which is why I do not believe that Gorton will buy both out. If any.

BTW, I really want to see what Graves can do, but fear that he will go the McIrath way with AV.

I do not believe that using your first round pick to bribe someone to take them is an option at all. Nor do I believe that buying both out is an option.

Yes, but this presumes that both are bought out. Which I do not think is likely.

There is a chance that defensive group could be an unmitigated disaster.

Yes, my mistake.

I hope we could start tanking for generation talents, and move Nash for 1st round pick and cap space, and that`s a good start without Nash we have less chance to qualify for playoffs next year. Then next year it`s easier to see what we have with Vesey & Buch since they will get more minutes when Nash is gone. If we are going to keep or move them until we can finally compete for the cup - and then decide who to move next to aim for next A. Matthews or Crosby.

Our defense has been an unmitigated disaster for two seasons and will continue to be one if the wonder twins are not removed from the roster.

I am not denying that it has been poor. I am only stating that 1) There may be no way of removing both of them, as I cannot see Gorton living the dead cap hit. 2) Simply removing them and writing in players that have not proven anything at the NHL level may not result in anything better than what has been.

What's worse: Dead cap space without them or having those players on the roster knowing they are done/can't get it done anymore?

The unknown is a much more viable option at this point. Look at what the Predators did. Stacked the top 4 and went with two "unknown" players on cheap contracts. If those guys sucked, they can be easily replaced. If Staal and Girardi suck next season, you can't just get rid of them midway through.

This is the only opportunity Gorton has to remove them both before next summer. If he doesn't jump on it for at least one of them right now, we'll very likely be having this same discussion a year from now.

Makes the most sense to buyout Girardi, we can save a lot more on cap space and he is completely worse than incapable against fast teams he's mistake prone and a major liability. I'm just hoping Gorton doesn't re-sign Glass

I don't mind buying out both because I see the team rebuilding within 3-4 years. The dead cap space will probably help then.
